This is, unquestionably, the nicest address in Copacabana. To live Rio in the purest tradition of the palaces of the thirties, this hotel, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, is the ultimate place to stay.

    Location 8.12 /10

Located along Avenida Atlântica, facing Copacabana beach. Rio's historic centre is 6 miles away (or 20 minutes) and the airport is 15 miles away (or 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic).

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

The hotel's 226 rooms are spacious, pleasant, and nicely furnished. Half of the rooms overlook the sea, while the other half open onto the city. Antique furniture mixes dark wood and high-quality beige upholstery. Amenities include air conditioning, a minibar, direct telephone and satellite television, as well as an Internet access outlet. The marble bathroom is luxurious and well-equipped: hair dryer, robes, and cosmetics. In rooms overlooking the sea, a balcony allows guests to have breakfast with the Atlantic Ocean in the background. Ideal to start your day!

    Overview 8.70 /10

The Copacabana Palace was the first hotel, in 1923, to have opened along this famous beach. Its exterior architecture is in the style of that era: the stucco façade is particularly elegant and impressive. A small-size lobby is centered with a large marble pedestal table topped by a flower arrangement. Behind it stands a monumental marble staircase. A tennis court and a semi-olympic swimming pool are available for your enjoyment. You will have plenty of room to swim in the latter. Afterwards, you can suntan on the deckchairs or mattresses arranged there for you. The solarium is large enough to find a remote place if you wish.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

The Copacabana Palace has two restaurants: the "Cipriani", the most famous, offers excellent Italian gastronomy in a posh environment. Deep armchairs with damask upholstery, soft carpet, white tablecloths, and stylish service. You will enjoy a memorable meal composed of excellent antipasti, fish, and al dente pasta. For a more informal lunch, or for afternoon tea, the "Pergula" displays its tables in the veranda by the swimming pool. Sober atmosphere, white tablecloths, and lacquered bamboo chairs: a very pleasant setting to enjoy salads, grilled food, and pastries.

    Beach 8.20 /10

To go to the beach, you simply cross Avenida Atlântica. You have 2.5 miles of sand at your disposal! A great opportunity to jog the path along the beach. You will soon feel like a true Carioca! Parasols, deckchairs and towels are available. As for water-based activities, this is a paradise for surfers. However, if you do not like rollers, you should go in the morning: you will have more chances to enjoy a glassy sea. Relax, or play beach volley: this is one of the most popular sports of Copacabana.

This is a good-quality hotel offering good facilities and a friendly and professional welcome, but there still seems to be something missing at the Windsor Excelsior that prevents it, in our eyes, from warranting the 4-star rating it boasts. The cuisine here is tasty and the guest rooms basic yet inviting, decorated in an orderly fashion despite the apparent lack of originality. There is also a panoramic terrace with a swimming pool, a gym and a sauna, and a beach service is provided to complete the offering.

The JW Marriott on the Copacabana seafront is a smart establishment which is ideal for both business travellers and holidaymakers alike. It is also one of the few hotels in Rio to offer a beach service, though sports enthusiasts are also well catered for here, with a rather well-equipped gym where all of the machines have their own mini television screens. The Marriott is also the perfect place to come to relax and unwind, not only thanks to the small spa and the swimming pool on the panoramic top floor but also thanks to its guest rooms, all of which are decorated with class and provide highly comfortable, if a little stifling, surroundings. The windows of the rooms facing the sea do not open whilst those overlooking the courtyard have a small balcony, though this internal area is nevertheless topped with a glass roof, so you still won't get any fresh air. The cuisine on offer at the hotel is worth a very special mention and there is a choice of three restaurants - one Japanese restaurant, one Mediterranean restaurant and a snack-bar.

The beautiful rooms in this hotel have been designed with care and refinement, and they are large enough to sleep up to four guests. However, they are not very bright, especially on the lower floors where the view is cut off by the neighbouring buildings. You won't enjoy sea views unless you are as high up as the last floor but one, which is home to af ew rooms in the superior category. The hotel is particularly liked by families, but at least half of its guests are travelling for business reasons. The panoramic terrace on the top floor has views of Christ the Redeemer, and it has a bar, a little swimming pool (big enough for a dip to cool off, but too small for a swim) and a gym with a few exercise machines. The restaurant serves simple but varied cuisine.

If you stay here, you are sure to remember the comfort of the guest rooms and their panoramic views, the hotel's 2 swimming pools, the free Internet access and, the icing on the cake, one of the finest gourmet experiences in the whole of Brazil. The Santa Teresa is a charming new hotel tucked away in the charming district of the same name located above Rio and criss-crossed by the typical yellow tramways. The hotel is now also a member of the prestigious Relais et Châteaux group, a sign of character, charm, courtesy, tranquillity, and fine cuisine. The gardens and panoramic pool terrace at the hotel are particularly pleasant. An ideal destination for a romantic break.

This hotel is a member of the Caesar Park chain, which owns various establishments in Brazil and South America, and stands facing Ipanema Beach in one of Rio's smartest neighbourhoods. With its well-designed lobby, decorated in a somewhat geometrical fashion and cleverly lit almost entirely by artificial light, this place just oozes class and elegance. The guest rooms here are very spacious but do not all have a view of the ocean, with some even only having a side view. The decor is traditional and almost European in style, rather at odds with the contemporary feel of the communal areas but nevertheless particularly well-balanced. Head up to the top floor of the hotel for the most spectacular views of the beach, maybe a bite to eat, and a paddle in the pool, or perhaps you'd prefer a visit to the hotel's well-equipped little gym. The cuisine is excellent here too!

This is a peaceful tropical paradise that you really won't want to leave, even to go explore Rio! First, the place is so charming, it really makes you feel like lazing around and doing absolutely nothing, and second, the area in which the hotel is located is quite a way from Copacabana and the city's other attractions. Having said that, the elegant surrounding neighbourhood and the sprawling lush green trees of the Tijuca Forest make for some beautiful views. With its 6 guest rooms (or suites), each decorated with antique items and decorative details bought who knows where in the world, the Gávea Tropical resembles an upmarket pousada. On arrival you will be welcomed by the lovely Aliny, wife of John, the owner, who will soon set about spoiling and indulging you as if you were one of the family. The icing on the cake, though, has to be the little spa area.

Just as its name suggests, the Marina All Suites is a hotel consisting only of suites, and it overlooks the beach in Leblon, a very sophisticated residential neighbourhood in Rio. From the most exclusive suites, which were designed by seven different designers, down to those that are 'basic' by name but not by nature (they measure between 39 and 55 m²), each has a small lounge, and many of them are also provided with a kitchen. The hotel's two public bars are very impressive. While Bar do Lado is remarkable in itself, it is Bar d'Hotel that really catches the eye with its very trendy local clientele. The establishment also has a swimming pool and a gym, but the best surprise is to be found up on the 16th floor, where there is a lounge room, a computer room and... a home cinema where you can watch films on the big screen!
