    Location 6.69 /10

The hotel stands on the Avenida Vieira Souto, along the spectacular Ipanema Beach. It is some 9 mi (around 20 minutes) from the historic centre of Rio, with the nearest underground station (Cardeal Arco Verde) 7 minutes away. The nearest railway station (Central Do Brasil) is also some 9 mi away, Santos Dumont domestic airport is about 8 mi away and Galeao International Airport is 17 mi away (allow between 30 and 45 minutes depending on traffic).

    Accommodation 9.45 /10

You will need to use your magnetic key to access your floor of the hotel, and the room numbers are printed on the floor itself! The rooms are spacious (30m²) and stylishly decorated, with amenities including an LCD flat screen satellite television, a DVD and CD player, discreet individual air conditioning, a desk, a mini bar refrigerator, a free electronic safe, a phone, and charged Wifi and ADSL Internet access. The king size beds are topped with high quality soft pillows, whilst the large balconies in some of the rooms offer superb views across Ipanema. The beautiful, ultra stylish marble bathrooms are spacious, clean and well-decorated. They come with a bathtub, a hydromassage jet shower, a toilet, a bidet, a set of scales, bathrobes, flip-flops, elaborate hospitality products, and a hair dryer. Room service is available 24 hours a day.

    Overview 9.70 /10

The Fasano Rio hotel opened in August 2007 and is a member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World collection, with 91 luxurious guest rooms, including 10 suites, housed in an 8 storey building with a panoramic rooftop terrace affording majestic views across Ipanema Beach. The terrace is reserved for guests staying at the hotel (it can only be accessed using your magnetic room key) and incorporates a 10x10m 1m-deep infinity pool. The terrace is open from 6:00am to 10:00pm and you'll also find showers and cushioned wooden deck chairs laid out in the shade of white canvas parasols here. Bath towels are also provided here free of charge. This trendy little spot also boasts a snack bar, a hammam, and a Vichy shower, and if you'd like to take the pampering a little further, head along to the stylish spa, which includes 4 massage rooms offering various treatments using Lancôme products, a hairdresser, an ultra modern fitness centre and a beauty salon. Apples and lemon or orange-flavoured water are provided. Back down on the ground floor, the reception desk is actually an Amazonian tree trunk! The lobby, meanwhile, is a circular, moderately air conditioned room, tucked away behind some curtains. You'll quickly feel at home here, what with the carpeted floors, cosy library area, trendy music playing gently in the background, chess table, stylish furniture and overall touch of the Philippe Starck about it. There is even a copy of the 1976 Michelin guide on the coffee table, as well as one of those famous Big Mama armchairs. Moving along, even the stylish toilets, complete with gilded washbasins, are worth a special detour!

    Food and drink 9.45 /10

The Fasano Restaurant Al Mare provides stylish surroundings with subdued lighting (courtesy of Philippe Starck!) and serves renowned Italian cuisine, including some excellent fish and seafood dishes, prepared by a team headed by a 3 Michelin-star chef (who has also been awarded 2 stars in the Guatro Rodas guide, Brazil's equivalent to the Michelin!). You will find the wine cellar is well stocked. The dining room can accommodate 80 people and there is also a private room, separated by a set of curtains, that can accommodate a party of 12, as well as the terrace area. Breakfast is served from 6:30am to 10:30am, lunch from 12:30pm to 3:00pm and dinner from 7:00pm to 1:00am, whilst the Baretto Londra lounge-bar is the perfect place to relax with a drink to the sounds of the Bossanova, every night from 8:30pm to 2:00am. This is undoubtedly one of the city's most comprehensive bars, renowned for its cocktails, with a fine collection of 33s adorning its walls.

    Spa

The stylish spa offers four massage rooms using La Prairie products (a luxurious Swiss cosmetic brand), a hairdresser, a fitness centre and an ultra-modern beauty salon. Apples and lemon or orange-flavoured water are available. This trendy venue also has a snack bar, a steam room and a Vichy shower.

    Beach 8.20 /10

The hotel has its own reserved area on the exclusive Ipanema Beach, just across the road. It is a beautiful almost 2 mi stretch of fine, light, clean sand that is perfect for bathing. Be careful, though, as the sand gets red-hot in the summer, so remember your Havaianas! The hotel provides a beach service for its guests and the parasols reserved for them are easily spotted thanks to their green colour. Guests can help themselves to the complimentary cushioned wooden deck chairs, parasols and beach towels provided and the area is supervised by an attendant. A word of advice: don't stray too far from the shore so that you can go swim while leaving your belongings on the sand. It is best to do as all Cariocas do: take just a bathing suit, a towel and a pair of flip-flops! Showers are also available on site, and there are countless beach volleyball and beach soccer pitches! The avenue is lined with bars, stands and restaurants where you will find all kinds of ice-cream, hammock, bracelet, jewellery and souvenir vendors. There was even a free massage stand when we visited! Just off the coast here you can see the Cagarras Islands in the distance, renowned for their fishing.

    To know

Every Sunday, a large arts and crafts market selling all kinds of souvenirs, some regional and some more authentic than others, takes place just a few minutes' walk from the hotel, at Gal. Osorio square. During high season, the hotel's clientele is 50% French-speaking. The hotel boasts two conference rooms that can accommodate 10 and 35 people respectively. Along with the Fasano Sao Paulo, the Fasano Rio is the second hotel belonging to the Italian Fasano family, renowned for its ultra stylish hotels, with others opening soon in Salvador de Bahia and Trancoso.

This hotel is a member of the Caesar Park chain, which owns various establishments in Brazil and South America, and stands facing Ipanema Beach in one of Rio's smartest neighbourhoods. With its well-designed lobby, decorated in a somewhat geometrical fashion and cleverly lit almost entirely by artificial light, this place just oozes class and elegance. The guest rooms here are very spacious but do not all have a view of the ocean, with some even only having a side view. The decor is traditional and almost European in style, rather at odds with the contemporary feel of the communal areas but nevertheless particularly well-balanced. Head up to the top floor of the hotel for the most spectacular views of the beach, maybe a bite to eat, and a paddle in the pool, or perhaps you'd prefer a visit to the hotel's well-equipped little gym. The cuisine is excellent here too!

The South American is located some 500m from Copacabana Beach and is practically right next door to the popular Ipanema district. Due to its location, however, none of the hotel's guest rooms have a sea view, though all are rather spacious and therefore suitable for families. The hotel is an elegant, respectable and perfectly pleasant, if slightly outdated establishment run by a friendly team. You might also be interested to know that everything in the restaurant, including the bread, is prepared by the hotel's chefs.

If you're planning on travelling around a lot and just want a base to spend the night and get something to eat then this could be the place for you. If you want a swimming pool, massage room, and gym, though, you'd best look elsewhere. Nevertheless, beach towels are provided by the hotel.

The Windsor Martinique enjoys a prime location just a few metres from Copacabana Beach, although it still doesn't directly face the ocean, so there's not much in the way of outlook from its guest rooms. This is a good hotel with no pretentions when it comes to design or the services it offers: a warm welcome from the efficient reception staff, a manageress who knows her stuff, and well-appointed and clean surroundings, despite the relatively basic decor. The small swimming pool and gym are located on the top floor, whilst the restaurant is on the ground floor.

This is a peaceful tropical paradise that you really won't want to leave, even to go explore Rio! First, the place is so charming, it really makes you feel like lazing around and doing absolutely nothing, and second, the area in which the hotel is located is quite a way from Copacabana and the city's other attractions. Having said that, the elegant surrounding neighbourhood and the sprawling lush green trees of the Tijuca Forest make for some beautiful views. With its 6 guest rooms (or suites), each decorated with antique items and decorative details bought who knows where in the world, the Gávea Tropical resembles an upmarket pousada. On arrival you will be welcomed by the lovely Aliny, wife of John, the owner, who will soon set about spoiling and indulging you as if you were one of the family. The icing on the cake, though, has to be the little spa area.

Just as its name suggests, the Marina All Suites is a hotel consisting only of suites, and it overlooks the beach in Leblon, a very sophisticated residential neighbourhood in Rio. From the most exclusive suites, which were designed by seven different designers, down to those that are 'basic' by name but not by nature (they measure between 39 and 55 m²), each has a small lounge, and many of them are also provided with a kitchen. The hotel's two public bars are very impressive. While Bar do Lado is remarkable in itself, it is Bar d'Hotel that really catches the eye with its very trendy local clientele. The establishment also has a swimming pool and a gym, but the best surprise is to be found up on the 16th floor, where there is a lounge room, a computer room and... a home cinema where you can watch films on the big screen!
