Well known on the island as a popular holiday resort, Accra Beach is a comfortable four star hotel with a range of facilities for the leisure and business traveller. Built in 1996 and most recently renovated in 2007, the Accra Beach Hotel and Spa is not the most luxurious address on the island but it is far from the no-frill product too. Combine its location on one of the most popular beaches on the island, with well-maintained infrastructures and it's no surprise that the resort attracts a lot of repeat guests.

    Location 10.0 /10

Accra Beach Hotel and Spa is located on the south coast of Barbados, a five minute drive to attractions such as St Lawrence Gap and the Garrison area, and at least 10 minutes to Bridgetown. The Grantley Adams International Airport is about a 20 minute car journey from the resort.

    Accommodation 7.95 /10

There are many different room categories to suit all kinds of travellers; from ocean front, to pool view standards, deluxe ocean view suites and deluxe junior suites. All rooms are clean, spacious and simply decorated yet somehow lack warmth or charm. Some standard rooms have balconies that face the car park and main road, while other rooms boast large balconies with wonderful sea views. Some of the upper category rooms are tasteful if not a tad classic. This extends to the hotel corridors in some places (old-fashioned jade carpets, little natural light), so much so that it feels more like a corporate hotel than a leisure hotel - an atmosphere that doesn't match the remainder of the hotel.

    Overview 8.20 /10

With 224 rooms in 11 different accommodation categories, Accra Beach is no small boutique property. The rooms are found in multi-storey buildings that curve around a central pool area and face the Caribbean Sea. Entrance to the hotel is via a spacious but slightly dark, simply decorated lobby. Attached is the lobby bar, the Sand Bar which looks out to the large lagoon-style pools at the heart of the resort. The centres of activity, the pools (2 + a children's pool) are nestled in pretty gardens, featuring aesthetic touches such as bridges and waterfalls. For those who like to keep active there is a well-lit and well-equipped fitness centre with great sea views. A pool table and table tennis are in the games room next door. Guests will surely adore the beautiful spa and beauty salon facility, Chakra Spa, tastefully decorated and a real haven of tranquillity. Be sure to book though, as there are plenty of local ladies that drop by to sample the large range of treatments on offer. As well as a sauna and steam room, check out the three gorgeous plunge pools covered in tiny violet and emerald tiles, found in a separate room bathed in natural light. For the little ones, there is also a kids' club for children aged 4-14.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

There are three restaurants (one of which is used mainly for banquets and functions) and two bars on site. The main restaurant, Coco Patch, is a pleasant and relaxed place to dine, with lots of natural light and views over the pools and beach. Featuring central columns decorated with tile art, the restaurant also boasts pretty lanterns, mosaics and stained glass features behind the buffet station. The buffet selection can be limited though; with a carvery section, soup, salads and an additional main dish (we tried the fish with mango and peppers). The Sunday buffet lunch is popular with many locals, and there is even live entertainment - steel drum Titanic theme song anyone? There is a floor show three times per week, and other themed evenings such as BBQ night, karaoke and the management cocktail party. Main meals à la carte at Coco Patch go for between BBD$40 and BBD$55 (£12.40 - £17.05). The second restaurant, Wytukai, is a Polynesian-themed eatery with kitsch but fun tropical décor such as multi-coloured bamboo structures, flowers and thatched roofs made of palm fronds. Wytukai is open for dinner Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Besides the lobby bar there is also a sunken bar in the large lagoon pool.

    Beach 8.95 /10

Accra Beach Hotel and Spa has the prime advantage of being located right on Rockley Beach, on Barbados's south coast. This popular beach draws tourists and locals, and gets especially crowded on weekends. The resort provides sun loungers, parasols and beach attendant service. There are a few small waves here but the beach remains relatively safe (it's for this reason it is popular with young families) and there is a lifeguard on duty. Rockley Beach is also found at the beginning of the one mile beachfront boardwalk which leads to the historical Garrison area.
