Amy Adejokun Section editor

In a luxurious setting, facing the sea and bordered by a river, the Rosalie Bay Resort is both spread out yet intimate, and very focused on well-being and nature without compromising on comfort. A great hotel in a superb setting, but the North American ambiance and the militant healthy lifestyle may irritate those who enjoy their pleasures and aren't simply health nuts.

    Location 3.0 /10

The Rosalie Bay is both lost in the southeast of Dominica (the least visited part of the island) and easy to access, as it is close to one of the few roads that crosses the island from east to west. The surroundings are unspoilt, other than a few houses in the hamlet of Rosalie, a little further up the mountain. Nature!

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

Despite its vast area, the Rosalie Bay Resort only has 28 guest rooms and suites divided into five categories according to their size and view: 6 'Garden View Superior Rooms' - the standard rooms -, 10 'Junior Suites' with a view of the sea or the garden, 9 'Oceanfront Suites', 1 'Premium Oceanfront Suite', and 2 'Riverside Suites'. At 35mē, the standard rooms are already large, and as of the Junior Suites category, the rooms increase to 60mē.

Like the outdoor areas, space is certainly not lacking at the Rosalie Bay. Inside, the hotel has gone for colonial-style raw wood furniture and a very classic decor. Despite very comprehensive facilities and furniture, there is still an impression of emptiness, which is accentuated by the white walls and the high ceilings. However, from the flat-screen television to the iPod docking station, the electric kettle to the free Wi-Fi, and the bathrobes and slippers, everything is provided and more. As for the bathrooms, the standard guest rooms have a shower, while the suites are fitted with a shower and a bathtub. In short, although the decor is not exactly unforgettable, the rooms are extremely comfortable.

    Overview 7.80 /10

The big trees and the patina colour, brought on by the humid tropical climate and the proximity to the ocean, are probably what give the impression of age to this hotel, built and opened in 2011. Split into around fifteen buildings scattered across a large park, the Rosalie Bay Resort is above all designed for guests looking for a well marked out return to the roots. Here, guests fill their days with excursions in nature, yoga classes, holistic massages, group meditation and healthy cooking classes. In addition to a beautiful swimming pool, a few deckchairs and a gym, the Rosalie also has a concentric maze that is ideal for meditating while walking, and a pool with koi carp for a Zen environment. The guests, mostly Americans and Brits, who are already familiar with the hotel get up early and go to bed early. Although this slightly moralistic ambiance won't appeal to everyone, it doesn't detract anything from the superb site. At the mouth of the river Rosalie which flows into the ocean, generously planted with majestic trees and coconut palms. Even inside the resort itself there are some fantastic walks in the complete peace and quiet.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The restaurant at the Rosalie Bay Resort is called the Zamaan. All three meals of the day are served here. There is no buffet. Situated near the mouth of the river, the dining room opens out onto the trees that separate the building from the river and the beach. There is a wide range of choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Of course, the focus is on vegetarian dishes and detox diets, as well as local products. A large part of the fruit and vegetables come from the resort's organic vegetable garden. It's best not to be in a rush, but it is good!

During the day, snacks are available at the pool bar. Themed evenings are organised from time to time.

During our stay we were able to visit the building site of the resort's new spa: bigger and better located than the old spa which, facing the sea, had no respite from the incessant noise of the waves. Using only artisanal cosmetic products made in Dominica, the spa offers a large range of treatments.

    Beach 7.10 /10

Guests don't come to the Rosalie Bay Resort for its beach. Black sand generously mixed with rocks, there is barely space to lay your towel when the tide is in. Not to mention the swell of the Atlantic, which gives little respite to fans of calm waters. The river that runs alongside the resort is much better for bathing. However, surrounded by superb nature, the beach is a superb place for a stroll through the wilderness.

    To know

The hotel is entirely non smoking, even in open areas.

From March to October, the hotel beach is a good spot to see leatherback, green, and hawksbill turtles laying their eggs. On request the evening beforehand, the hotel warden can wake you up at night if the turtles start to arrive on the beach.

Well integrated into its environment, with special attention to local, organic products and renewable energy, the Rosalie Bay Resort is an eco-friendly hotel.
