Sitting on the windy hill above the main beach of the sleep surf village of Sagres at the south-eastern corner of Portugal, Mareta Beach and Mareta View are two separate boutique bed and breakfasts that sit just next door to one another. Sagres is only visited by real travellers in the know about the Algarve's most beautiful areas. There isn't much to do in Sagres, but it is a great base for a truly relaxing holiday away from the madding crowds of Portimao, Vilamoura and Albufeira. With its big sea, big beaches and big skies, travellers here are completely immersed in nature, which is why people fall in love with Sagres as soon as they arrive. The Mareta bed and breakfasts are great for couples or groups of friends looking to hire a car and explore the area's coves and beaches.

    Location 1.0 /10

The Mareta Beach boutique hotel is located right next door to its sister hotel, Mareta View, also a bed and breakfast. They are in the small surfing village of Sagres, and because this area is far from Faro airport (about a two-hour drive), it hasn't been influenced by tourists and has therefore retained an authentic atmosphere that is hard to find elsewhere in the Algarve.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

Both bed and breakfasts have about 20 rooms each, meaning the staff at reception is a lot more relaxed and better able to attend to each guest individually and provide more of a personalised service.

The rooms at Mareta Beach are simple, comfortable and recall a typical Ikea style. Mareta View is slightly cosier although come come pretty close. The Mareta View rooms are brighter and fresher in the light received from the large windows, but also from the sharper palette of colours used in the décor and they do however have the huge added bonus of beautiful views of the sea.

Each room has a small flat-screen television. There aren't any safes in the rooms, but guests can leave their valuables at reception for safe-keeping.

Some rooms have bath-tubs and others just have showers, so if you have a particular preference, mention this before arrival.

    Overview 6.70 /10

The Mareta bed and breakfasts both opened in 2008 and are fairly modern and cosy, boasting fantastic views of the long sweeping sandy beach below.

Mareta Beach has a simple white and turquoise slightly more formal edge, while Mareta View has a relaxed beachy holiday atmosphere, which is perfect for travellers (as opposed to tourists). Tastefully decorated, the living area in the lobby is pleasant, fresh and boasts fantastic views of the beach below. Mareta View would be our first choice for its atmosphere and lounge area at reception. You will find a small bar in the lobby at Mareta View as well as a large television and a computer terminal for guests needing to connect to the internet.

There aren't many facilities at the hotel, but there is a tiny plunge pool in the Mareta View garden, which does the job cooling you down in the sweltering Portuguese heat. The natural wild gardens surrounding both hotels leading down the bay add a little touch of rural romance.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The hotels only serve breakfast. The basement rooms are windowless and therefore not the most pleasant of spaces to have a meal first thing when you wake up, especially with all that Portuguese sun shining outside. There are several local eateries in the area, including a coffee shop adjoining the hotel for a convenient coffee break.

    Beach 8.70 /10

The beach just below the hotel is one long stretch of sand. Most of the time the waters are calm and turquoise, giving an idyllic aspect of the beach to the guests sitting in the hotel garden. The waters can be calm, but due to the winds, there are sometimes choppy waves, although they are hardly enough to call the beach down at the bay prime surfing material. There is a cobbled path that leads from the hotel garden directly to the beach.

    To know

The Mareta Beach and Mareta View are two bed and breakfasts of the same group and located right next to one another. Although check-in is done separately, guests are allowed to meander the gardens on either side.
