At the heart of the Pelourinho, the historic centre listed by Unesco as world heritage, Gilles and Didier welcome you to their Casa do Amarelindo, a very beautiful 19th-century mansion, superbly restored, in an all-Bahianese ambiance and under the protection of the local deities: the Orixas. The pool is one of the top features of this hotel, with its panoramic view over All Saint's Bay, along with the hotel's excellent cuisine.

    Location 10.0 /10

The hotel is housed in a renovated 19th-century mansion located at the heart of the historic centre of Salvador da Bahia listed world heritage by Unesco, on 6 rua das Portas do Carmo. The airport is 21 mi away and can be reached with a 40 minute taxi ride.

    Accommodation 8.95 /10

The guestrooms of the Casa do Amarelindo are spacious, providing high standards of comfort: their facilities include an LCD flat screen television, a DVD player (free of charge), a king-size bed and a marble desk, and they never fail to charm their guests with their solid wood floorboards, blue walls, original wrought-iron grids - decor inspired by the colonial Bahianese style. Two orixas on the walls will make sure you are safe at night! The rooms are all equipped with a free safe with an electronic code, spacious enough to fit a laptop inside, a silent mini fridge-bar stocked with guarana juice (a very popular fizzy drink made with Amazonian seeds), air-conditioning combined with a ceiling fan, a telephone and free broadband wired internet. Only the superior rooms have a balcony or a terrace, giving their lucky guests a chance to enjoy the superb panoramic view of All Saints' Bay. The bathrooms are also spacious and pleasantly decorated, equipped with a large tropical shower with a flexible head, a toilet, a bidet, a telephone, a hairdryer, a magnifying mirror, tissues, a water bottle and many hospitality products. The Casa do Amarelindo benefits from a rare feature in Salvador: drinking water from the tap! The district can be noisy at night but the double-glazed windows ensure a good nights' sleep.

    Overview 8.95 /10

In case you are interested, 'amar é lindo' means 'love is beautiful' and those who understand a little Portuguese will understand the pun on 'amarelo' (yellow) or even 'Amarelinho' (its diminutive form), in reference to the façade of the Casa do Amarelindo. This 19th-century, 4-storey building was wonderfully restored in 2005 to house 10 guestrooms, accessible via a lift. The French owners Gilles and Didier have been welcoming their guests since January 2007, so they will be able to give you advice on visiting Salvador da Bahia and the surrounding region. Needless to say that service here is personalized! A panoramic terrace is available for guests to admire the superb All Saints' Bay. It is reserved to the hotel's guests and is home to a rectangular pool (7x2.5m, 1.4m deep) surrounded by wooden deckchairs and mats. Bath towels are complimentary, in this very peaceful area. An ideal place for cooling down on a hot day, both the pool and gym are open day and night. The best view however is to be found on the rooftop equipped with a bar which is decorated with a large collection of orixas, the deities of the local religion, Candomblé. In the lobby, you will enjoy paintings by Carybé, an Argentinian artist and photographs by Pierre Verger. The ground floor was originally an ironworker's workshop, but you can now relax on two lovely tropical patios here.

    Food and drink 8.95 /10

The restaurant of the Casa do Amarelindo is excellent: on offer is à la carte international fusion cuisine prepared with local produce, served with Chilean, Argentinian and Brazilian wines. You can taste appetizers prepared with coriander, fish sauce, cashews, dried prawns, bread, beju and cassava root for example. You will even be able to order meat cooked very rare which is extraordinary in a country where meat is always cooked medium. Tropical fruit clafoutis, bananas and cinnamon, and mango in cocomilk are some of the desserts available at the Casa do Amarelindo. Caipirinha lovers will be delighted as they won't be limited to the classic lemon-flavoured cocktails - why not try the cashew or siriguela-flavoured ones for a change, they are to die for! Meals are served from 7:00am to 10:30pm. Breakfast consists of freshly-prepared fruit juice (kiwi, guava, mango, passion fruit and watermelon), delicious fresh mango, pineapple and paw-paw, home-made yoghurt, home-made cakes and pancakes. The bar on the rooftop panoramic terrace is open to all from 4:30pm to 11:30pm, providing a musical ambiance. This is the opportunity for you to sip delicious caipirinhas while admiring All Saints' Bay.

    To know

Because the Casa do Amarelindo is situated in the constant hustle and bustle of the Pelourinho, expect therefore to live to the exhilarating rhythm of batucada. Don't book a room at this hotel if you are in search of silence! It is ideal however if you wish to visit the numerous baroque churches, which are the pride of Salvador, or walk the streets lined with colourful houses, or even buy unusual souvenirs in the numerous small craft shops (embroidered, woven and carved items). To reach the lower part of town, you will need to take the 70 metre-high lift which is situated a few steps from the marina and Mercado Modelo (the renowned traditional market of Salvador). The beaches, however, are further away: they border the south-eastern part of the town, starting from Farol da Barra. It will take you 10 minutes by car to get there. If you take your laptop with you, you will be able to connect to the internet in your room thanks to a broadband cable. About a quarter of the clientele are French in this hotel, and children under the age of 16 are not permitted to stay here. Small pets, however, are welcome - they will keep Prunelle company, she is the owners' dog, a real mascot for the casa!
