    Location 9.61 /10

This establishment is housed in a superb colonial building found in the city centre at 90 Rua Direita de Santo Antonio, a stone's throw from the Unesco-listed historical centre, Pelourinho. The airport is 17 mi away with a transfer time of 40 minutes by taxi.

The district of Santo Antonio is a real haven of peace and quiet in the historical centre. Therefore, you can easily get to the thick of the action at the frequent street parties organised in Pelourinho, which is less than a 5 minute walk away, but also escape it all when you return to the tranquillity of the pousada's neighbourhood to recharge your batteries.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The Pousada des Arts has 8 rooms oozing charm, with their yellow walls, a few local pictures, a big mirror, a wicker armchair, and curtains in the typical multicoloured style of Bahia. It could not be more romantic! We also liked the lampshades, which are coloured in the pastel colours of Pelourinho: red, green, purple, and yellow. If you are wondering about the views, 4 of the rooms have a balcony overlooking a very pleasant street that is lined with colourful houses and peaceful at night, while the other 4 have a big terrace with a panoramic view over Bahia de Todos os Santos bay and the harbour of Salvador de Bahia. Measuring between 20 and 40m², the rooms are all different. Their pretty parquet floors are made of precious wood and the furniture consists of stylish and original forged iron items. The romantic 4 poster bed is protected by pretty white curtains, and an extra bed is available in case you are have a child in tow. A calendar of cultural events is thoughtfully provided on your bedside table. The facilities include a mini bar fridge (on the terrace), a safe with a key (free), a direct phone line, Wifi and ADSL wired Internet access (free), a flat screen satellite television (lots of channels), and a DVD player, not to mention the hammock on the terrace, surely one of the best inventions ever! There is also individual air conditioning combined with a ceiling fan. The spacious bathroom is decorated with yellow and brown tiles and equipped with a large fixed shower head, a toilet, a hair dryer, and hospitality products tied up with the famous lucky wrist ribbons from Senhor do Bonfim Church. Rooms 3 and 4 still have their original brick arches. Rooms 5 and 6 are on the second floor and have a mezzanine level up a staircase, which will come in very useful if you are bringing your children. The terrace is decorated with the same yellow and brown patterned tiles as the bathroom. Furnished with a wicker armchair, a sofa with a colourful cushion, and a hammock, this is the height of luxury at siesta time, and is also not a bad spot from which to enjoy the view. If you're feeling a little thirsty, the mini bar fridge is just under the hammock!

    Overview 8.70 /10

The Pousada's superb yellow and red flowery facade entices you to push open the gate to this incredibly charming address, but you will actually need to ring the bell and wait for the receptionist to open the door for you. This 18th century building has been superbly restored and now houses 8 guest rooms on 2 storeys, which are organised around a patio with flowers, plants, and a fountain. Inside, there is a lounge area also serving as a library; a very peaceful place to relax. If you cross it to the other side you will find yourself on the panoramic terrace overlooking Bahia de Todos os Santos bay. Breakfast is served down the stairs from this terrace on another terrace enjoying a similar view. As in most traditional homes in Salvador de Bahia, the stairs leading to the rooms are rather steep. Therefore, the hotel is not recommended for people with reduced mobility. The entire building has free Wifi Internet access. The 300m² cultural space, which is open over the sea, showcases Bahian and Brazilian art as well as works from further afield.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

Breakfast is served as a buffet from 7:30am to 10:00am on a panoramic terrace decorated with yellow and brown tiles, like in the guest rooms. You could not wish for better views of Bahia de Todos os Santos bay! The walls are coloured from floor to ceiling and adorned with murals displaying the beautiful local ladies, all in keeping with the ambiance! The dishes are hidden in 14 earthenware pots set out in 2 rows of 7, each with a coloured fabric cover, so you are always in for a surprise and sure to find a different speciality, whether it be pancakes, homemade cakes made in the local style, or tropical fruit. Needless to say, there is freshly squeezed fruit juice (guava, mango, passion fruit, and watermelon), as well as delicious fresh mango, pineapple, and papaya, homemade yoghurt, and slices of ham and cheese. However, you are left to your own devices when it comes to lunch and dinner, as there is no restaurant, but that should not be a problem in this neighbourhood!

    To know

The Pousada des Arts is housed in a well restored 18th century colonial building. The welcome is friendly and the service personalised. We were really impressed by how the owner and his wife, Eric and Rose, bend over backwards to give you ideas of what to see in the city, which they know like the back of their hand. Eric also organises sunset catamaran outings on Bahia de Todos os Santos bay. As the Pousada des Arts is located in the upper town, it is only a few minutes walk from the Pelourinho (historic centre). It is perfect for visiting the numerous baroque churches, which are Salvador's pride and joy, as well as walking in the streets lined with colourful houses and buying unusual souvenirs in the small craft shops (embroideries, basketworks, sculptures). To reach the lower town, there is a 70m elevator that drops you off a few steps from the marina and Mercado Modelo (the best known traditional market in Salvador). The beaches, however, are a 10 minute drive away. They border the southeastern part of the town starting from Farol da Barra. As in most traditional homes in Salvador de Bahia, the stairs leading to the rooms are rather steep. Therefore, the hotel is not recommended for people with reduced mobility. Events are organised at the Pousada all year round, such as Jazz and Bossa Nova concerts, and exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, photography, poetry, and so on. The Pousada des Arts certainly deserves its name!

The Pousada supports charity projects in Salvador, so if you have any clothes, toys, or medication to donate, remember to set aside a bit of space in your suitcase...
