    Location 7.5 /10

The hotel is located just 5 miles from the noisy and very lively town of Samana, on the winding road that leads to Las Galeras. The new airport at Samana is located 25 miles away: It takes about 45 minutes for transfers.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

The rooms are very well equipped (air conditioning with a fan, a king-size bed, an iron and an ironing board, direct dial telephone for international calls, a fax line and Internet, a full refrigerator, facilities for tea and coffee, a large electronic safe and satellite television offering 47 channels, and even a desk for those considering working during holidays). The decoration is designed with local paintings and orchids. Each of the hotel's 109 rooms has a unique view from the balcony: 9 rooms overlook the mountain and 100 rooms overlook the island of Cayo Levantado. With a little luck, you can see the tail of a humpback whale! The bathroom is a little small but well equipped, including a bathtub with a shower, non-separate toilet, a magnifying mirror useful for removing contact lenses or shaving, personal skin care products, tissues, and a hair dryer.

    Overview 8.20 /10

Open in December 2006, the Gran Bahia Principe Samana belongs to the Spanish chain, Gran Bahia Principe. It consists of a single four-storey building, equipped with elevators. The site does not extend for miles around. Its style, inspired by colonial times, yearns for peace. It is built on a small cliff just above the sea, in the midst of rich vegetation. The building is perfectly integrated into a natural park adjoining the island of Cayo Levantado (15 minutes by boat). On the ground floor, there is an impressive lobby with a vast glass roof, decorated with a large statue in the middle. The restaurants are situated on the lower level, where a swimming pool equipped with sunshades and wooden deckchairs with mattresses, invites you to take a swim. As for the facilities, the Bahia spa (three massage rooms and products from Skeyndor) and the Bahia gym help keep you in good form.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

This "all inclusive" hotel has two restaurants that serve a la carte for dinner, with a reservation, from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (one is a seafood restaurant on the terrace that has a wonderful view of Cayo Levantado and the other is a gourmet restaurant). There is also another restaurant that serves buffet style, varying its themes every night (Dominican, oriental, Mexican, American, Spanish and international). The dishes are delicious and varied - great cuisine! The main buffet, "The Plantation", serves excellent breakfast (from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.), lunch (from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and dinners (from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.). The snack buffet serves light meals 24 hours and you will taste different cocktails in the four bars of the complex (the pool, the snack bar, the lobby and the piano bar, a arm's reach from the beach).

    Beach 8.20 /10

The beach is beautiful but rather small. Do not expect an endless stretch of sand. The trees, whose roots almost sink into the sand, protect you from the sun's rays after your swim. The beach is equipped with plastic deckchairs with mattresses, on which you can relax and order your cocktail.

    To know

Like most hotels in the Dominican Republic, the Gran Bahia is open all year round, the climate would not allow otherwise! You are greeted by a true natural tunnel, formed by the junction of the branches of trees lining the road. From January to April, quietly sipping a pina colada on the terrace, you can see without any difficulty whole groups of migrating whales. An unforgettable show!
