Margot Millier Section editor

A few miles from the centre of San JosÚ, the impressive Marriott hotel was built following the design of a 16th century hacienda. All around it stretches a beautiful and vast estate with lush greenery, a golf course and coffee plantations among other things. Although the services are good quality and varied, they can seem a little formal. Leisure and business clientele come here.

On the outskirts of San JosÚ, the Marriott is 10 mi away from the city centre and 3 mi from the international airport.

    Accommodation 8.95 /10

Thanks to the many lifts, you can easily reach the 300 rooms of the Marriott which were all renovated at the end of 2008; the corridors, however, seem never ending. Surprisingly, the style of the rooms does not reflect in any way the spirit of the hacienda, which is present everywhere else in the hotel. Great comfort and modernity await you in the harmonious, stylish rooms, which are painted in bright pale green and yellow - the colours of coffee plantations. The six cushions placed on the famous Marriott bedding invite you to relax. The quality of the upholstery and the black wooden furniture posed on green carpet flooring is to be admired. The rooms are equipped with a very large plasma screen satellite TV, a filled mini-bar, tea and coffee facilities, a telephone, an ironing board and an iron. The beautiful all-marble bathrooms are fitted with a low bathtub, a hair-dryer, a magnifying mirror, bathrobes, a sink and a wide variety of hospitality products. Room service is available 24 hours a day.

    Overview 8.70 /10

Built in 1996, this large reconstruction of a hacienda is set on a vast hilly estate of 32 acres. Homogenous, the yellow-painted fašades and red-tiled roofs do not show any wear of time, which gives them a slightly artificial touch. On five levels, the interior presents some beautiful sculptures and some very high quality period furniture; numerous decorative elements from all over Central America; exposed beams on the ceilings; palm trees on the patio and numerous archways opening on to different areas. However, the red ceramic flooring can make the place very noisy and even clashes a little with the rest of the decoration. On the side of the courtyard, after you have played a little tennis, why not take a stroll in the coffee plantation? The garden side is very tranquil and harmonious. A small chapel (no service) on one end of the superb and hilly golf course complements the beauty of the setting often used for the organization of events. In the background, the mountains of the central valley stand out. It is nice to relax on the wooden deckchairs or swim in the large rectangular swimming pool, with green vegetation and palm trees all around you. Down below, children can paddle in a smaller pool. Small paths paved in grey stone lead to the open-air auditorium, the large jacuzzi shaded by the trees, and then to the spa housed in a building surrounded by glass panes and divided into 4 massage rooms. Among the wide variety of treatments offered here, the most popular is the coffee one. The sports room is very well equipped, with the latest apparatus. The only thing missing is natural day light.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

The guests of the Marriott are able to take their meals anytime between 6:00 am and 11:00 pm. Bricks, terracotta, wood and wrought iron pleasantly adorn the renovated kitchen of this large hacienda. It is here, next to a large oven, that you sit to enjoy your breakfast with all the various sorts of bread, pancakes, cooked meats, refined cheeses and freshly squeezed fruit juices, etc. You then return for lunch and dinner to taste the different kinds of 'cerviche', for example. There is a lot of choice. Why not sit on the terrace and enjoy the superb view of the park! If you fancy a change, leave the Antigua and taste some Spanish Ó la carte dishes in the second restaurant Isabela. Next to the large boutique, the cafeteria Casa del Cafe is the place where you can have a snack, as there are cakes and sandwiches.

    To know

Unsurprisingly, the Marriott is the venue for many business meetings, as it presents a nice change of scenery and it is close to the airport and the capital. The president of Costa Rica also comes to the hotel for talks with his prestigious guests, as the hotel has a large conference centre.
5 rooms have been adapted for disabled people.

    Accommodation tip:
All the rooms look out on to the surrounding nature, but if you can choose, take one on the golf side, not far from the reception and the swimming pools!
