Standing on the side of a cliff overlooking the beautiful cove of San Miguel, the Cartago somewhat ruins the beauty of this superb site (along with its two neighbours with which it shares its facilities), but at least it offers some beautiful panoramic views! A swimming pool, sports activities, entertainment, a children's club, etc., you'll have everything you need within your reach, including a choice between three restaurants, which include a tapas bar and a Chinese restaurant.

    Location 10.0 /10

On the side of a cliff overlooking the adorable cove of San Miguel, one of the loveliest holiday resort spots in Ibiza, 12 miles north of the capital of Eivissa. The airport is located just under 16 miles away, or 30 minutes by car.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

Fitted with red ceramic tiling, the guest rooms are nicely decorated with two paintings by Miro (imitations of course), a mirror, a small wooden desk with a mini television, a chair, and white and pastel-blue walls. They all have air-conditioning, a key-operated safe and Wi-Fi Internet access (the last two are both charged extra). However, there is no mini-bar or room service. There is a magnificent view of the beautiful cove of San Miguel from the balcony furnished with a white plastic table and four chairs. The bathroom is equipped with a bathtub and a flexible shower, two bars of soap, a shower gel dispenser on the wall, a toilet and a hair-dryer.

    Overview 6.95 /10

Built in 1973 and renovated in 2011, the Cartago hotel is a member of the Spanish hotel group, Stella Polaris. Its ochre-coloured walls and terraced architecture brings to mind the Amerindian pyramids. With a capacity to accommodate 400 guests in its 196 guest rooms, the hotel consists of an 8-storey building serviced by 2 lifts (meaning a never-ending wait), large lounge areas with panoramic views and a central swimming pool. The heart of the hotel is the air-conditioned lounge bar that is open from 9:00am to midnight. Affording a magnificent view, it holds the stage where entertainment is put on, a pool table, two table-football tables and a panoramic terrace overlooking the beautiful cove of San Miguel. The coffee here is very good (which isn't always the case in the hotels of Ibiza). The 2m-deep swimming pool is open from 9:00am to 7:00pm and has a few water loungers but is not supervised. There is a 28-inch deep paddling pool for children and towels can be hired at reception for 1.50. We were disappointed with the lack of space around the swimming pool, however, the view is magnificent!

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

The meals here are served as a buffet with show cooking in a room that can hold 290 guests and which has large bay windows overlooking the sea. Breakfast is served from 8.00 am to 10.30 am, lunch from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm, and dinner from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm. Snacks are served here as well from 11:00am to 12:00pm and from 10:00pm to 11:00pm. For a pre-dinner drink, head to the tapas bar between 6:00pm and 8:00pm, where the entrance is guarded by a Tintin (the Belgian cartoon character) in a red bellboy uniform. For a bit of a change for dinner, you can make a booking at the buffet-style Chinese restaurant where you will have a choice between two sittings, either from 6:45pm to 7:45pm or 8:00pm to 9:00pm. This time, it's the Nelson character from the Tintin comics who will greet you at the entrance. The dining room is decorated in a Chinese style, of course, and can hold up to 60 guests.

    Beach 8.20 /10

Located at the heart of the pretty cove of San Miguel, surrounded by fresh-smelling pine-covered hills, the Cartago's protected beach is reasonably-sized, has crystal-clear water (you can see the fish swimming right up to the shore) and fine sand. The beach is equipped with showers, deckchairs and parasols (for which there is an extra charge). Peaceful, supervised and not too windy, you can practice many different water sports here (all for a fee) thanks to the sailing school, including water-skiing, banana boating, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing (this activity is free), or go out on the water on a glass-bottomed boat. Enjoy the setting as you drink some coffee or a nice glass of beer and even have a bite to eat in one of the restaurants or bars on the side of the cliff.

    To know

Open from May to October, the Cartago, which has a very large French clientele, is part of a vast all-inclusive tourist complex that includes two adjoining hotels; the Galeon (reserved for Italian guests) and the San Miguel, where most of the guests are English. The clients can all take advantage of all the facilities offered by the complex, including a gym and a multi-sport court. Don't miss out on visiting the Can Marca caves nearby or the cove of Beniras, where you can see some beautiful sunsets over the astonishing 'Finger of God' rock. Every Sunday during the summer months, the hippie community comes together here creating a 1960s flower power ambiance with djembes, didgeridoos and even a bolas show: a beatnik ambiance guaranteed!
