The Rocce Sarde has something of a mountain feel about it, despite its location just 5 minutes from the sea. Set amid a holm oak forest overlooking the Gulf of Cugnana, this very traditional Sardinian hotel enjoys a superb setting, making it an ideal base for those looking for an action-packed holiday. If you're looking for somewhere you can spend your days relaxing without having to stray too far though, there are also plenty of facilities and peace and quiet to be enjoyed on the spot. In fact, the only potential disappointment might be the highly inconsistent guest rooms.

    Location 6.0 /10

The hotel is located midway between Olbia (12.5 mi or 20-25 minutes from the airport) and Porto Cervo, making it an excellent base from which to explore both the sea and the countryside by car, or even by bicycle for more athletic guests. The friendly staff will be able to give you more information. The immediate surroundings of the hotel, consisting of rocky hills covered in scrubland, are spectacular; just don't expect to find any signs of life. The closest beach is less than 2 mi away, as is the village of San Pantaleo, where you'll find a small selection of shops.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

The 80 Standard guest rooms at the Rocce Sarde are all housed in the main building. Some of them have a view of the sea while others overlook the hills (which is also pleasant), and some of them only have a window while others have a balcony (or in some cases a real terrace). Do bear in mind, though, that all of these are classed as Standard rooms, so you'll need to specify your preference when booking. The typically Sardinian decor inside the hotel consists of the usual painted walls and wood. The guest rooms offer a rather modest level of comfort in relation to the standard the hotel aspires to, with just a small television, storage areas concealed by a curtain, etc., and if you've got noisy neighbours, that could be a problem! Nevertheless, you'll have all the basics for a pleasant stay, and the bathrooms (which come with a shower only) are also rather nice.
In 2005, 10 single storey suites, all with a small terrace boasting a view of the sea, were added slightly set back from the main building. The lounge areas in these rooms also have a sofa bed, making them a great option for families.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The decor in the main building is typical of the local style; from the lobby right down to the last nook and cranny, the interior design is traditionally Sardinian, complete with stencil paintings all over the walls. There's really no escaping it. Enthusiasts, take note!
Fortunately, the exterior setting is spectacular, with floral gardens, climbing wisteria, ivy and bougainvilleas, large lawns, and an oak and olive tree forest overlooking the Bay of Cugnana. The small swimming pool located just below the main building enjoys a great location set amid holm oaks, olive trees, junipers, and large rocks against a backdrop of rocky peaks, making it a real haven of peace. Access to the pool area is via a steep and winding pathway through the trees, and whilst the pool is rather far from the guest rooms, there is a snack bar complete with a terrace and toilets just alongside it.
When it comes to sports, the Rocce Sarde boasts 2 lovely tennis courts (with a professional instructor and lighting available on request, both incurring an additional charge) and a ping-pong table. Mountain bikes are available to borrow free of charge for those looking to explore the region in greater depth. Various games, tournaments, aquagym, and aerobics classes are organised in July and August by the hotel's 2 entertainment coordinators. There is also a mini-club (open in July and August only) to keep children entertained. The Rocce Sarde doesn't have its own beach but there is a free shuttle service that operates between the hotel and the public beach less than 2 mi away. A variety of water sports activities can be booked directly through the hotel, which also has its own boat that offers trips to the Maddalena Islands.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

All 3 meals of the day are served as a varied and generous buffet at the hotel's only restaurant, La Lodgia, which features large picture windows and boasts a terrace overlooking the Bay of Cugnana. The extensive wine list features a selection of reasonably-priced wines, unlike the hotel's 2 bars, in the lobby and at the poolside, where drinks are rather expensive. The poolside snack bar also serves a selection of light meals at lunchtime.
The highlight of the culinary week at the Rocce Sarde is Thursday, when a traditional Sardinian night is organised. Guests have the opportunity to dine al fresco on wooden tables laid out on the hillside under the holm oaks, on the site of a former sheep barn. The myrtle-seasoned suckling pig is roasted in the chimney carved into the rock before being served on cork plates covered with bread dough. Paper lanterns hang from the branches and folk music plays in the background. Put all of this together and you couldn't wish for a more authentic ambience!

    To know

The hotel attracts guests from all over Europe and is particularly popular with German, Swiss, and Austrian tourists. The Rocce Sarde isn't a seaside hotel but a free shuttle service runs every 5 minutes between the hotel and the public beach at Portisco (bear in mind that the frequency of the service varies depending on the season). There is no lift here so the guest rooms and some of the facilities, such as the swimming pool, can be tricky to access for those with reduced mobility. Pets are welcome (except in the restaurant) for an additional charge.
The Rocce Sarde also offers 10 residential apartments located half a mile from the hotel, with their own pool and superb views.
