The Hodelpa Caribe Colonial is a nice small hotel in the centre of the old town whose modern, Art Deco style, contrasts with the historical monuments around it. The general architecture of the building, however, lacks style.

    Location 9.62 /10

Located within a quarter of an hour's walk from the historical monuments of the colonial zone, and within two steps from the pedestrian street of Conde, the hotel is situated in the street named Isabel La Catolica (No. 159), 19 miles from the airport at Las Americas.

    Accommodation 7.95 /10

The hotel has 54 rooms, including 2 suites and 8 superiors (with a king-size bed or two double beds). All are equipped with air conditioning, television, an ironing board (no iron), a safe, a full mini-bar (local drinks only). The Caribe suite, with a king size bed, is elegantly decorated with mahogany furniture of ?rt deco style. It also has a jacuzzi bath and shower, a separate living area, a kitchenette, a terrace with two rattan lounge chairs, a plastic shelf, a daily newspaper. A large jacuzzi has been added to the Honeymoon suite which is 540 ft² in size, fully decorated and furnished in white. On the third floor, a terrace furnished with a sunshade offers a view onto the town and the national pantheon.

    Overview 7.45 /10

Opened in 2000 in the heart of the colonial area, the hotel, a small three-storey building with an elevator, clean but with insipid architecture, offers a variety of services including Internet access and a printer connected to one of the computers. The "guest book" is full of compliments, especially on the personnel's service and the suites. The blue fluorescent neon lights at the counter please the eye upon entering the building. The decoration, blue and white furniture, is minimalist, modern, Art Deco style. The hotel has its own boutique... Art Deco, too.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The main restaurant, serving a la carte, offers Dominican and international cuisine. Located on the right of the reception, the wooden tables on a raised platform, are impeccably arranged. Outside, the small wooden terrace a bit higher than the reastaurant can only accommodate the four beige and brown tables. The Lobby Bar offers tropical and international cocktails. Note: the bar is closed on Sunday.

    To know

The hotel has its own electric generator, an important asset during the hot and humid season, because the town experiences frequent electrical outages. Sometimes entire buildings are plunged into the dark, without air conditioning, of course.

The boutique El Palacio Hotel is nestled in a street of the Zona Colonial, the historic quarter of Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital. Set in the house of Buenaventura Báez, former Dominican president who served five terms during the 19th century, the hotel has plenty of period charm, the main draw of the establishment without 5-star hotel prices. The rooms are cosy and built on several levels, meaning guests have access to quaint leafy courtyards, adding to the pre-twentieth century ambience of the hotel.

The Mercure Comercial, ideally located in the colonial zone, seems to be an appropriate stopover for a sightseeing tour in the capital with your family, but it is much less suitable for a long stay. The reason: its lack of charm.

Located on the Malecon, on the seafront, approximately 15 minutes' walk away from Santo Domingo's colonial area, the Melia is one of the capital city's chic and business-oriented hotels, equipped with a gym, a spa and a beautiful pool on the panoramic terrace overlooking the sea. This 12-floor skyscraper lacks character but is nonetheless a very comfortable hotel: a perfect stopover to explore the first city of the New World.

Doña Elvira is located in the heart of the Zona Colonial, or the colonial district of Dominican capital, Santo Domingo. A charming sixteenth-century boutique hotel that has seen better days and could do with a little bit of a revamp to bring it back to its former glory, but still provides a pleasant and quiet base to explore the surroundings from. A typical noble home with a central courtyard where you will find a pool, it stays relatively cool throughout the year.

It is hard to imagine there is a hotel behind the façade of this one-storey blue house located on the corner of the famous Calle de las Damas, the first street of the New World at the heart of Santo Domingo's preserved colonial zone. As its name suggests, the Coco is a boutique hotel and as such only offers five rooms that have been superbly decorated. The best part of it is the panoramic rooftop restaurant.

Nestled at the heart of Santo Domingo's colonial zone, this small hotel is in an ideal location for discovering the riches of the first city to be discovered in the Americas.
