In the heart of the Zona Colonial, the old quarter or colonial quarter, of Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital, the Nicolas de Ovando Hotel is more than just a hotel, but having been built in 1502 as the residence of the eponymous first Governor of the Americas, it is a city landmark and a Unesco World Heritage Site. Managed by French hotel management group Accor, the hotel is set prime location, and its luxury surroundings offer comfort and high standards to an upmarket clientele. The 5-star M Gallery Nicolas de Ovando Hotel is located in one of the first formal official streets of the New World in the Americas, making the building and this area of town a very popular spot with visitors and locals alike.

    Location 9.45 /10

The hotel is located right in the heart of the colonial quarter of Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital, on the world-famous Calle de Las Damas (Street of Dames), the first official paved street of the New World in the 16th Century. Just opposite the Ozama Port, the hotel is well located for exploring the area, which together with the Museum of Natural History, is the only real attraction in the city. The airport is about 20 miles away and the time to reach the hotel is traffic-depending; it can take from 30 minutes to an hour. The nearest beach, the Boca Chica, is a 40-minute drive away.

Just across the street from the hotel is a small square surrounded by ruins where a small market takes place at the weekends.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

The hotel has 104 rooms, including 51 colonial rooms, 3 suites and 2 junior suites. The remaining 53 rooms are more contemporary in style, meaning there is a room for every taste - also, it's worth remembering that every room is different in shape and size due to the original purpose of the buildings. The largest colonial suite (nearly 1,075 ft²) has two levels and its refined decor made of Caoba (Mahogany), a dark wood found locally, gives the room a welcome local charm. Every room has a king-size bed (with twin mattresses), a marble with separate shower and bathtub, a lounge area with two large rattan sofas and a marble coffee table. All rooms have air conditioning, cable television, large flat-screen televisions, telephone, Internet access, a safe and a full mini-bar.

    Overview 7.70 /10

Reopened in 2004 after a complete renovation, the hotel has conserved its original Spanish colonial hacienda charm but offers the latest in comfort and technology. Built around a small courtyard with a pool, the hotel actually consists of three houses that have been knocked through to make the one building, so rooms are located on various levels, which creates privacy and means that the hotel has three separate leafy courtyards for guests to enjoy. The pool patio, where you will find the bar terrace, looks over the Ozama Port while most of the rooms either have a courtyard or street view. The hotel has two bars and a restaurant serving lunch and dinner as well as 24-hour room service. All rooms come with fluffy bathrobes and slippers.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

The lobby bar adjoins the Cibao cigar lounge and billiard room open from 4:00pm for cocktails. La Résidence is the hotel's main restaurant and serves lunch and dinner and seats 80 diners. The area has a relaxed colonial atmosphere emphasised by wrought iron details and potted palm trees. The cuisine here is mainly Mediterranean. The outdoor terrace can accommodate 30 people, although on hot days customers prefer to sit inside within the comfort of air-conditioned temperatures. The hotel also offers its in-house guests 24-hour room service.

    To know

Note that unless you are actually staying at the hotel, outsiders are not permitted onsite unless there is an advance booking for a table at the restaurant.

The boutique El Palacio Hotel is nestled in a street of the Zona Colonial, the historic quarter of Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital. Set in the house of Buenaventura Báez, former Dominican president who served five terms during the 19th century, the hotel has plenty of period charm, the main draw of the establishment without 5-star hotel prices. The rooms are cosy and built on several levels, meaning guests have access to quaint leafy courtyards, adding to the pre-twentieth century ambience of the hotel.

The Mercure Comercial, ideally located in the colonial zone, seems to be an appropriate stopover for a sightseeing tour in the capital with your family, but it is much less suitable for a long stay. The reason: its lack of charm.

This 12-floor skyscraper lacks character but is nonetheless a very comfortable hotel: a perfect stopover to explore the first city of the New World.

Doña Elvira is located in the heart of the Zona Colonial, or the colonial district of Dominican capital, Santo Domingo. A charming sixteenth-century boutique hotel that has seen better days and could do with a little bit of a revamp to bring it back to its former glory, but still provides a pleasant and quiet base to explore the surroundings from. A typical noble home with a central courtyard where you will find a pool, it stays relatively cool throughout the year.

It is hard to imagine there is a hotel behind the façade of this one-storey blue house located on the corner of the famous Calle de las Damas, the first street of the New World at the heart of Santo Domingo's preserved colonial zone. As its name suggests, the Coco is a boutique hotel and as such only offers five rooms that have been superbly decorated. The best part of it is the panoramic rooftop restaurant.

A former private home from the 1860s, Atarazana is somewhat reminiscent of a Brasilian-style pousada, with its flower-filled patio sheltering a small basin and waterfall. This charming establishment only has six small rooms to offer. Guests are welcomed like members of the family by German owner Suzanne. Nestled at the heart of Santo Domingo's colonial zone, this small hotel is in an ideal location for discovering the riches of the first city to be discovered in the Americas. It is one of our favourites in the Dominican Republic.

In a quiet residential district in the capital, Santo Domingo, this Holiday Inn is a business hotel which should meet all the needs of a demanding clientele, thanks to its free Internet access, its beautiful rooftop swimming pool area and its very stylish lounge bar. On the other hand, it is far from the beaches and the colonial zone.
