On the seafront in the capital, Santo Domingo, the Renaissance Jaragua is one of the biggest hotels in the city, so big in fact that you might almost think you're in a resort in Punta Cana, with its huge lagoon-like swimming pool in the middle of a vast tropical garden, its spa, its gym, its four tennis courts, and even a casino.

    Location 7.75 /10

On the seafront lining the Caribbean Sea, 30 minutes on foot from Santo Domingo's UNESCO-classified colonial zone. It takes around 30 minutes to reach the Las Americas International Airport, which is about 19 miles away.

    Accommodation 7.75 /10

Measuring 52m²; the guest rooms at the Renaissance Jaragua are the most spacious ones in the city. Fitted with green carpeting and cream-coloured beige walls, they offer a certain charm, with their painting of Santo Domingo hanging above an elegant wooden desk. For amenities, they have a satellite television concealed in a wardrobe, a free digital code safe that is large enough to hold a laptop computer (the Wi-Fi Internet access here is free), an iron and an ironing board, individual air-conditioning, a mini-bar fridge (with two free bottles of water) and tea and coffee-making facilities. However, there is no balcony. The rooms located in the building dating from 1988 offer a beautiful view of the sea while those located in the one from 1948 overlook the garden. You'll have everything you need in terms of furniture: a king-size bed or two queen-size beds, a round wooden table, a suitcase stand in the wardrobe and a red sofa with a footrest. The roomy bathroom holds a small bathtub with a flexible showerhead, welcome toiletries from the Aveda cosmetics brand, a telephone, cotton swabs, a make-up mirror, shoe polish and a hair-dryer. Room service is available 24/7.

    Overview 7.75 /10

The Renaissance Jaragua consists of a one-storey building built in 1948 (the tiles in the hallways are still the original ones) and a second 10-storey building dating from 1988. There are a total of 300 guest rooms here (renovated in 2009) served by four lifts. The distances to get from one spot to another in the resort can sometimes be far, what with the restaurant, casino, spa, four tennis courts, guest rooms, swimming pool and gym with the latest equipment. The spa is separated into separate sections for men and women. On each side there are eight treatment and massage rooms, a beauty salon (manicures, pedicures, facials), a hot tub, a sauna, a hammam and a relaxation room where you can have some tea or coffee or eat an apple to the sound of relaxing Indian music. Lying in the middle of a vast tropical garden, the huge 1m52 deep lagoon-like swimming pool even has a water volleyball net. Wicker deckchairs stand on the terrace surrounding the pool. Showers, parasols, towels, everything you need is here. The tropical vegetation is enhanced by large basins fed by waterfalls and home to turtles. The vast lawns planted with flowers and coconut and mango trees are ideal for pleasant walks. In the distance you can see the sea. The swimming pool bar serves snacks from 10:00am to 6:00pm.

    Food and drink 8.25 /10

Located next to the lobby and the garden, the Quisqueya restaurant can accommodate 64 guests in a room with green carpeting. Served from 6:00am to 11:00am, breakfast is copious and well-presented in the form of a buffet with an open kitchen where you can order omelettes and other fried eggs at will. It gives you the chance to enjoy some pancakes, drink some fresh fruit juice and taste the local speciality: mangu, a banana purée fried with onions and cheese. Then, from midday to 3:00pm and 6:00pm to 11:00pm, you can enjoy à la carte international cuisine. Next to the swimming pool, the blue bar lounge serves snacks from 10:00am to 8:00pm and tapas from 6:00pm to 11:00pm in a laidback (and non-smoking) ambiance.

    Spa 7.75 /10

With separate areas for men and women, the spa has eight treatment and massage rooms in each section, a beauty salon (manicures, pedicures, facials), a Jacuzzi, a sauna, a steam room, and a relaxation room where guests can drink tea or coffee while eating an apple to the sound of the relaxing Indian music.

The boutique El Palacio Hotel is nestled in a street of the Zona Colonial, the historic quarter of Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital. Set in the house of Buenaventura Báez, former Dominican president who served five terms during the 19th century, the hotel has plenty of period charm, the main draw of the establishment without 5-star hotel prices. The rooms are cosy and built on several levels, meaning guests have access to quaint leafy courtyards, adding to the pre-twentieth century ambience of the hotel.

The Mercure Comercial, ideally located in the colonial zone, seems to be an appropriate stopover for a sightseeing tour in the capital with your family, but it is much less suitable for a long stay. The reason: its lack of charm.

Located on the Malecon, on the seafront, approximately 15 minutes' walk away from Santo Domingo's colonial area, the Melia is one of the capital city's chic and business-oriented hotels, equipped with a gym, a spa and a beautiful pool on the panoramic terrace overlooking the sea. This 12-floor skyscraper lacks character but is nonetheless a very comfortable hotel: a perfect stopover to explore the first city of the New World.

Doña Elvira is located in the heart of the Zona Colonial, or the colonial district of Dominican capital, Santo Domingo. A charming sixteenth-century boutique hotel that has seen better days and could do with a little bit of a revamp to bring it back to its former glory, but still provides a pleasant and quiet base to explore the surroundings from. A typical noble home with a central courtyard where you will find a pool, it stays relatively cool throughout the year.
