Located on the Malecon, on the seafront, approximately 15 minutes' walk away from Santo Domingo's colonial area, the Melia is one of the capital city's chic and business-oriented hotels, equipped with a gym, a spa and a beautiful pool on the panoramic terrace overlooking the sea. This 12-floor skyscraper lacks character but is nonetheless a very comfortable hotel: a perfect stopover to explore the first city of the New World.

    Location 7.75 /10

The hotel is located on the Male?on lining the Caribbean Sea, approximately 30 minutes' walk away from Santo Domingo's colonial zone, one of Unesco's Heritage Sites. Allow half an hour for transfers to Las Americas international airport, 20 mi away.

    Accommodation 8.25 /10

Fitted with carpet, the Melia Santo Domingo's rooms are spacious (323 sq ft) and elegant, decorated with pretty paintings. They all have a desk, a free electronic safe with a code, satellite television (50 channels), an ironing board and an iron, quiet individual air-conditioning, a fridge minibar and a telephone with broadband internet connection. The bay windows offer a beautiful view of the sea from the rooms which, unfortunately, are not perfectly sound-proofed as you can hear the noise rising from the street as well as your next-door neighbour's television. The bathrooms' amenities include a bathtub fitted with a flexible shower, a toilet, a telephone, a magnifying mirror, bathroom scales, a hair-dryer and hospitality products. Tissues are concealed under the washbasin, on the right-hand side. Room-service is available 24-7. For more comfort, the junior suites have a king-size bed, a flat-screen television and a balcony furnished with a round stone table and four chairs.

    Overview 7.50 /10

The beige building houses 245 rooms on 11 floors - the Melia Santo Domingo is very much a vertical hotel, evidently! Built in 1978, it is a member of the Spanish hotel group Melia. The restaurant bar is located in the vast, elegant and bright lobby, whereas the spa and gym are on the first floor. Just push the door and step onto the large panoramic terrace, with its spacious rectangular 5 ft-deep pool, which is open from 9:00am to 6:00pm. Another 2 ft-deep pool is dedicated to children. If you are feeling lazy, you can relax on the deckchairs, sheltered from the sun by white canvas parasols, while you enjoy the panoramic view of the Carribean Sea, with the Male?on at your feet. Some of the deckchairs are fitted with double mats, ideal for a lovers' nap! If you have forgotten to bring towels, don't worry, beach towels are provided by the hotel on the spot, and if you're feeling peckish, there are always sandwiches and drinks served at the pool-side bar. The spa's amenities include a sauna, a hammam and two massage rooms.

    Food and drink 7.75 /10

La Casabe, the Melia Santo Domingo's restaurant, is near the lobby, to the right when you walk into the hotel. With a capacity of 250 guests, it serves international cuisine in a spacious hall decorated with Taino patterns (these were the local inhabitants before the settling of the Spaniards). Breakfast is served from 6:00am to 11:00am, lunch from 12:00pm to 3:00pm, and dinner from 7:00pm to 12:00am. La Canasta then serves Dominican cuisine from 8:00pm to 6:00am. The lobby's piano bar serves various drinks and cocktails from 10:00am to 12:00am to the sound of live music from 8:00pm to 10:00pm. It also has a wide flat screen.

    To know

If ever you feel hungry at 3 o'clock in the morning, the restaurant is open 24-7! Be aware that the lift works with a magnetic card (your room key) and will only take you to the floor of your room. It is therefore impossible to visit a friend accommodated on a different floor! Devoted fans of gambling can try their luck at the hotel's casino. If you take your laptop with you, you will be able to benefit from free WiFi internet connection in the lobby and free ADSL connection in the rooms, but if you forget it, four computers are available for free for the first 10 minutes, and payable there after.

The boutique El Palacio Hotel is nestled in a street of the Zona Colonial, the historic quarter of Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital. Set in the house of Buenaventura Báez, former Dominican president who served five terms during the 19th century, the hotel has plenty of period charm, the main draw of the establishment without 5-star hotel prices. The rooms are cosy and built on several levels, meaning guests have access to quaint leafy courtyards, adding to the pre-twentieth century ambience of the hotel.

The Mercure Comercial, ideally located in the colonial zone, seems to be an appropriate stopover for a sightseeing tour in the capital with your family, but it is much less suitable for a long stay. The reason: its lack of charm.

Doña Elvira is located in the heart of the Zona Colonial, or the colonial district of Dominican capital, Santo Domingo. A charming sixteenth-century boutique hotel that has seen better days and could do with a little bit of a revamp to bring it back to its former glory, but still provides a pleasant and quiet base to explore the surroundings from. A typical noble home with a central courtyard where you will find a pool, it stays relatively cool throughout the year.

It is hard to imagine there is a hotel behind the façade of this one-storey blue house located on the corner of the famous Calle de las Damas, the first street of the New World at the heart of Santo Domingo's preserved colonial zone. As its name suggests, the Coco is a boutique hotel and as such only offers five rooms that have been superbly decorated. The best part of it is the panoramic rooftop restaurant.

This charming establishment only has six small rooms to offer. Guests are welcomed like members of the family by German owner Suzanne. Nestled at the heart of Santo Domingo's colonial zone, this small hotel is in an ideal location for discovering the riches of the first city to be discovered in the Americas. It is one of our favourites in the Dominican Republic.
