    Location 6.48 /10

The Shilla Seoul stands just a stone's throw from the city centre in the beautiful Namsan Park, affording direct views of the N Seoul Tower. The city centre is just a few stops away on the underground (lines 3 and 4), whilst Incheon International Airport is some 36 mi away, with a transfer time of an hour and a half.

    Accommodation 9.70 /10

The hotel's 465 guest rooms are spread over 23 floors and have views of either the city or the mountain of Namsan Park. The rooms here come in a choice of categories, namely Standard, Deluxe, and Grand Deluxe, all of which feature the same style of decor. The spacious guest rooms have a floor area of 26m² - 53m² and come with individual air conditioning, a minibar with tea-making facilities and 2 complimentary bottles of water per day, a safe, a hair dryer, bathrobes and slippers, a selection of L'Occitane hospitality products, and a Korean mobile phone with a personalised number. The Executive rooms (Deluxe and Grand Deluxe) are housed on the Executive floors (18th and 19th) and include the above-mentioned amenities plus: breakfast and happy-hour in the Executive Lounge on the same floor, late check-out (3:00pm instead of midday), free access to the sauna, free Internet, an in-room fax machine, and the use of a conference room for 2 hours a day. There are a total of 11 different types of suite, ranging in size from 53m² - 390m². The most amazing of these is the 53m² Korea Suite, featuring typically Korean decor complete with a coffee table and cushions on the floor.

    Overview 9.70 /10

The 23-storey Shilla Seoul stands proudly at the edge of the park in a building housing 4 restaurants, a bar, a pastry boutique, a very well equipped fitness centre with over 250 machines. But that's not all! There is also health centre complete with coaches, an indoor pool, an outdoor pool, an indoor driving range, a whirlpool bath, a sauna, and last but certainly not least, the minor detail of indoor and outdoor running tracks! The Guerlain spa (open 7:00am to 10:00pm) consists of 10 private lounges, a relaxation room, and even a hydrotherapy shower. A less often seen Clinique de Paris anti-ageing centre is on the 3rd floor and a dental and cosmetic health centre is on the 5th floor, offering a variety of oriental and sleep-related treatments. If you are of a more practical mind, however, you may be interested to know that there is also a bank, a travel agency, and a photo studio on the 6th floor, as well as a selection of 20 or so shops within the hotel that are open from 9:30am to 7:30pm. Those coming from abroad will be delighted with the duty-free area, which consists of 3 floors of shops and is housed in an adjacent building just a 5 minute walk away. As you will have realised by now, its facilities are certainly one of the hotel's strong points, as are the welcome you'll receive and the service they provide. They really do pull out all the stops here to make guests' lives easier. The beige and white decor is very striking and incorporates clever lighting and an interesting use of materials.

    Food and drink 8.95 /10

One of the hotel's restaurant's, the Palsun, serves high-quality Chinese cuisine, whilst the Ariake serves Japanese fare in very sophisticated surroundings. If that doesn't appeal to you, you might want to try the French cuisine on offer at the Continental. It is located on the 23rd floor of the building and affords breathtaking views across the city. The Parkview, meanwhile, is the ideal place to come for breakfast, lunch, or a lighter evening meal. Its open kitchen puts together simple yet high-quality cuisine, including pasta dishes, soups, salmon, and local specialties such as bulgogi, bimimpap, etc. The bar, meanwhile, is open from 9:00am to 2:00am and provides an inviting setting for a business meeting or a refreshment after a hard day's shopping. The most original little feature of the hotel, though, has to be the Pastry Boutique, a colourful bakery-patisserie selling various breads, desserts, and even fresh sandwiches and salads.

    To know

The Grand Ambassador Seoul is one of many large scale, high standard hotels in the city. This comfortable hotel is equipped with every necessary facility for guests to enjoy their stay. Within a 10 minute walk, they can be in the city centre or else enjoying the indoor driving range. This fabulous hotel used to belong to the Sofitel group but it now bears the Pullman label. Out of the Grand Ambassador's 5 restaurants, our favourite was the gastronomic Café du Chef, which is the hotel's pride and joy thanks to the excellent French and Korean cuisine it serves.

Korea's oldest operating hotel, the Westin Chosun has never been better. With a downtown Seoul location, this refined, classy property marries the very best of Asian hospitality and service with the finest European amenities and design. Being a chain hotel, no great risks have been taken in terms of the décor, however the scale is pretty grand and the guestrooms are spacious in a way that us Europeans could only dream of. They are not only generously proportioned but highly functional, excellently appointed and above all comfortable. Close to many of the city's main attractions, the hotel also has top class eating and drinking outlets and an admirable wellness facility. The fine views and quite remarkable service make the Westin Chosun Seoul one of the city's finest accommodation choices.

Arguably the city's trendiest place to stay, the W Seoul Walker Hill is very much a young person's hotel with outlandish design, a buzzing social scene and some fine amenities. Sat high above the city to the east, the hotel affords magnificent views of the South Korean capital, but its location does mean that it is a little distant from the centre of Seoul. However, being on the edges of the city has its advantages such as the availability of space. The guestrooms and suites at the W are extremely generous and the restaurants, wellness facility and public spaces are all generously proportioned too giving the guest a freedom not found in many other properties. A real spectacle, the W is a must for any self-respecting modish traveller as long as they do not mind being on the fringes of the city.
