Hotel Mont Thabor Hotel 3 star
1 Chemin De L'envers Serre Chevalier, France
Amy Adejokun Section editor

This hotel is only open during the winter, and although pleasant, it does lack charm. Despite the original Mediterranean style and a full range of facilities including a well-being space, there is a sense that something is missing, maybe a real breakfast room or a genuine spa, or perhaps harmony in the decor and ambience.

    Location 3.0 /10

The hotel is located in the village of Villeneuve, 100m from the ski lifts and a few minutes from the shops and restaurants in the resort village.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

There are 24 guest rooms all in the same category, plus a suite, a honeymoon suite, and a duplex. The rooms are not very large and are furnished in a simple fashion. For once, instead of carpeting, the floor is tiled, but the good heating compensates for the coolness of this material. All of the rooms are equipped with a DVD player; just remember to bring some DVD's! The spacious bathrooms have a really big bathtub, a large mirror, and a hair-dryer - a must here. The overall feel of the rooms is one of warmth, thanks to their light yellow walls, but there is not much to suggest you are in the mountains. The 3 superior rooms are ideal for families since they are spacious and the nature of the layout allows for adults and children to have their own separate areas. Apart from the 4th floor duplex, all of the rooms have a balcony.

    Overview 6.45 /10

This average-sized hotel opened in 2004 and is decorated in a Mediterranean style, even though it is only open during the winter months. With the light yellow walls and the French-speaking staff, you will certainly feel like you are somewhere exotic! The reception opens onto a large room that overlooks the road and is furnished with tables and chairs. This is not only where guests check in, it also serves as the breakfast room, and is neither charming nor comfortable.
A so-called 'well-being' space is open to guests between 4:00pm and 8:00pm and can be accessed along a corridor that leads to an outdoor passageway. It consists of a sauna, hammam, and whirlpool bath, and there is just a single little window high up the wall. All in all, there is a real lack of charm and decorative appeal and the spot is hardly conducive to relaxation. A more tempting option is to use the sauna and then return to the bathtub in your room, which is more pleasant than sitting in the whirlpool bath in the centre's cloakroom decor.
The hotel has a bar that morphs into a nightclub which can be accessed from reception, so you won't have to don your coat before heading out to party.

    Food and drink 6.20 /10

In the evening, you can dine in the restaurant adjoining the hotel either as a half-board guest or as a simple visiting guest. The original menus are called 'passé simple' (simple past), 'passé composé' (perfect), and 'plus que parfait' (past perfect). The latter is the most elaborate option. The first one costs £20 and consists of mountain specialities, including a starter and dessert. When we visited, the gourmet menu included a foie gras starter followed by a fillet of duck or beef and a fairly classic dessert. The food and the value/quality/quantity for money are both good. However, breakfast might prove disappointing, being served as a buffet in a space arranged like a small kitchen next to reception. The food comes straight out of packets to keep it fresh and maintain hygiene but this does no favours to the taste. The coffee comes from a self-service coffee machine.

    To know

The breakfast space, which is next to the reception, could be greatly improved if it were refurbished and partitioned off.

Neither a hotel nor a residence, the management hasn't quite made up its mind about this former Best Western establishment. One thing's for sure, its apartments are brand new and fully-equipped. The only snag is that the hotel overlooks a car park.

The Alliey & Spa is a charming village hotel that appeals to aficionados of fine food who wish to combine their stay in the mountains with a good bit of pampering. However, the different levels of luxury between the guest rooms and the rest of the facilities might not live up to everyone's expectations.

The Boule de Neige is a charming little 10 room hotel located in an old building, and is perfect for couples and small families. It has the advantage of offering peace and quiet in a location close to the slopes and organised activities. It is a pity that more than half of the rooms are north-facing and that they are so small.

The MMV in Serre Chevalier is a family-friendly club hotel offering good value for money, provided you are not too picky when it comes to meal times. It offers full-board accommodation and entertainment and activities designed for guests both young and old.
