Hotel La Boule De Neige Hotel 2 star
15 rue du Centre Serre Chevalier, France
Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Boule de Neige is a charming little 10 room hotel located in an old building, and is perfect for couples and small families. It has the advantage of offering peace and quiet in a location close to the slopes and organised activities. It is a pity that more than half of the rooms are north-facing and that they are so small.

    Location 5.3 /10

The hotel is located in a peaceful street in the village of Chantemerle but is still close to the organised activities and shops, and no more than 150m from the closest ski lifts.

    Accommodation 6.20 /10

With just 10 guest rooms, this is a small hotel where a certain amount of privacy is guaranteed. However, not all of the rooms boast the same advantages, since only 4 of them have south-facing windows letting in plenty of natural light as well as enjoying views over the mountain. Of the remaining 6 rooms, 2 are on the ground floor and have no views at all, while 4 are north-facing and therefore a bit gloomy. Despite the charm and very tasteful decor that helps make these rooms feel cosy, the lack of space may well put off some potential guests. Most of the rooms have both a double and a single bed, so they can also accommodate families. Finally, for your comfort, the bathroom is equipped with a bathtub and a hair-dryer.

    Overview 7.20 /10

This tall house dating back to the 17th century is a typical example of mountain lodgings and has all the appeal - and drawbacks - of accommodations from back in the day. It may be cosy and small but is full of charm. The reception is found at the bar, which opens onto a long room where restaurant tables are arranged in the evening. A few steps down there is another restaurant space and a lounge. In keeping with the spirit of the entire hotel, comfortable sofas are set around the fireplace to help you feel at home. These 3 open-plan rooms have stone floors and are adorned with antique items. The whole place feels welcoming. Across the road, there is another communal space in the form of a garden, where guests can soak up the sun in the summer.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

Finally, a hotel that serves freshly squeezed orange juice at breakfast time! There is no better way to begin the day. To accompany this dose of vitamins there is a buffet of pastries, toast with a homemade praline spread - eat your heart out, Nutella - and homemade preserves to enjoy a taste of real fruit with your fresh bread. However, there are no hot dishes, meaning no bacon or eggs. In the evening, there is a menu with a choice of 2 starters and 2 traditional dishes at affordable prices (£10 to £16), as well as a buffet of homemade desserts, if you still have room. The dishes are made by the hotel manager using local seasonal ingredients, which really comes through in the taste. The restaurant is closed at lunchtime but guests are usually off walking or skiing in the mountains at this time of day anyway.

Neither a hotel nor a residence, the management hasn't quite made up its mind about this former Best Western establishment. One thing's for sure, its apartments are brand new and fully-equipped. The only snag is that the hotel overlooks a car park.

The Alliey & Spa is a charming village hotel that appeals to aficionados of fine food who wish to combine their stay in the mountains with a good bit of pampering. However, the different levels of luxury between the guest rooms and the rest of the facilities might not live up to everyone's expectations.

This hotel is only open during the winter, and although pleasant, it does lack charm. Despite the original Mediterranean style and a full range of facilities including a well-being space, there is a sense that something is missing, maybe a real breakfast room or a genuine spa, or perhaps harmony in the decor and ambience.
