The Inglaterra exudes the kind of distinctive charm of an establishment with a real history. One of the first hotels in its category to open in Seville, it has managed to retain some of the features that have made it famous since that date back in 1857. The current building was erected in 1968. The façade could be more attractive and the breakfast room is also rather low on appeal. Inside, the hotel logo displayed on the various stained glass windows and furniture, in addition to the types of wood used and the Irish bar (which opened in 1995), make the place feel both classic and unique at the same time.

    Location 9.23 /10

The Inglaterra is located in the heart of Seville on Plaza Nueva, just opposite the statue of King Fernando III of Spain and next to several shops. It should take you around half an hour to get to the airport, which is approximately 10 mi away.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The Inglaterra's 86 guest rooms are spread throughout the hotel's 6 storeys and are decorated in a very classic style with light-coloured parquet flooring, yellow walls, and English-style furniture. The rooms with the best views are those overlooking Plaza Nueva; the others face the street behind the hotel, which is not a bad view but just not quite as good. The standard rooms measure 25m². In addition to the white ceiling mouldings with a grey background, the hotel's logo can also be seen on the furniture (cupboard, headboard, minibar unit). Lithographs depicting Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris or Asian patterns (traditional Japanese clothing, for example) adorn the walls. There is a flat-screen television near the window, and the rooms are also equipped with a free wired Internet connection. You won't need to work out any complicated mechanisms to open and close the shutters because they're automatic! The bathrooms are lined with grey and white marble and come with a small and rather old-fashioned hair-dryer, a few hospitality products, and a towel with two lions embroidered on it.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The empty expanse of land left opposite the town hall after the demolition of the Casa Grande de San Francisco convent was used to build a luxury hotel, the Fonda Inglaterra. At the time, according to the hotel website, the local press reported its delight that Seville should finally be home to a hotel that reflected the city's status as the kingdom's third capital. The current building, which dates back to 1968, was most recently renovated in two stages: the lounges were refurbished in 2001, and all the guest rooms in 2007. The white façade does not give the most charming first impression. Once you have passed the antique car at the front, which serves as the hotel's emblem, you enter the lobby and find yourself at the reception counter. The space is adorned with a statue and a poster advertising upcoming bullfights. At the far end of the room is a stained glass window displaying the hotel's original logo of two lions. There is also a clock, a table displaying tourist information, and a computer with Internet access in this part of the hotel. Gilded lifts evoke the hotel's historical past. If you take the corridor, you will walk past a display cabinet exhibiting a number of interesting items: a cocktail guide, ties bearing the hotel logo, a photo of the Prince of Wales in 1927, antique keys, several cups won by the Inglaterra (including an award for 'touristic merit' it received in recognition of its 150th birthday), etc.

In front of the pub, there is another little lounge furnished with comfortable armchairs. Everything on display in this typical setting comes from Ireland, including the wood. It opened in 1995 and offers daily set menus including a starter, main course, dessert, and coffee for about £10. However, the real speciality of the place is its cocktail menu. The Trinity 2002, one of the house specials, is a concoction of Bacardi Reserva, Pisang Ambón (a kind of banana liqueur), and a mixture of coconut, pineapple, and kiwi juice. The Manilva is a mix of whisky, Martini, and orange and lime liqueur, and is so good it won the Spanish Cocktail Championship for the hotel!

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

The hotel restaurant is located on the 1st floor and is furnished with a few tables covered with white cloths and decorated in a classic, understated fashion. The stylish wood parquet floor perfectly blends in with the furniture, red chairs, and lamps, creating a welcoming ambience. Here and there, a few shelves adorned with bottles add the finishing touch to the decor. If you are fond of meat, you will not be disappointed, since the 'carrillada' (pig's cheeks) is one of the specialties prepared in the kitchen. There are also a number of fish dishes on the menu (expect to pay between £11 and £16) and for dessert you can enjoy the fried milk cake. Next to the restaurant you can enjoy breakfast in a room with a marble floor, chandeliers, and a few stained glass windows. The meal consists of an American buffet every day from 7:00am until 10:30am.

    To know

When the hotel was originally built in 1857, it was the first place offering hotel accommodation in Seville. Since then, its motto, 'Prestige, Tradition, and Quality', has remained the same. Over the course of the 19th century, the French owners sold their shares to the employees. Apparently, the staff speak several languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Japanese.

This three-star establishment, which belongs to the 'Casas y Palacios de España' group, could barely be in a better geographical location than its address at the heart of Seville. The interior design features a combination of Andalusian items and more classic decorative objects. The guest rooms, which are spread over three floors accessed via a lift, are spacious and practical. The pleasant inner courtyard is brightly lit through its vaulted, coloured-glass roof, and is the perfect place to sit with a book or just unwind with a little something to drink. However, the breakfast room and lobby have a somewhat cold appearance.

The hotel is located between Armas Square shopping centre and the 'Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza' arena in the city centre, close to Isabel II Bridge, which crosses the Guadalquivir River enabling you to get to the working class district of Triana. The Monte-Carlo is a simple and cheap establishment offering limited facilities, but it is comfortable enough, with a nice restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch, as well as a sitting room with a big TV set, a bar, and a charming patio providing the perfect setting for drinks.

This hotel belongs to the High Tech group and enjoys a perfect location, at the heart of Seville, on Plaza Canalejas and opposite the famous Meliá Colón. The Petit Palace hotel provides its guests with free Internet access and has fitted each of its 52 rooms with a computer, which is a real bonus feature. However, if you like to have a lot of room, we would recommend that you don't book a standard room as you'll almost certainly find that it's not spacious enough. Alternatively, if you're travelling as a family and are looking for good value for your money, choose one of the family rooms as these are fitted with bunk beds. Try to avoid the rush hour at breakfast as the room is rather small.

A stone's throw from Triana and Seville's Art Museum, the Confortel Puerta Triana includes four rooms especially adapted to cater for disabled guests and affords a magnificent view of the cathedral. Its common areas are spacious and the interior decor blends various designer elements. There are individual TV sets in the breakfast room, which is particularly appreciable for those travelling alone. However, the standard guest rooms could do with a bit of a makeover: the furniture has been changed recently but the bathrooms still await much-needed renovation work.
