Located in the district of Macarena in the suburbs of Seville is the superb building of San Gil hotel (which dates back to 1901). A charming hotel, with a lovely flower-filled garden and patio, its only downside is its distance from the city centre, but its main attraction is definitely the pool on the panoramic terrace.

    Location 6.75 /10

San Gil hotel is located on Parras street, a quiet residential street in the district of Macarena to the north of the city, a little out of the way of the city centre and the cathedral. A stone's throw away from the hotel, you will find the Macarena Gate and the old ramparts of Ronda de Capuchinos, as well as Macarena Basilica. The San Gil hotel was named after nearby San Gil church. Be aware that Don Pablo international airport is 9 mi away - allow 20 minutes for transfers.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The San Gil hotel rooms are spacious (323 sq ft), with marble floors, and they certainly don't lack character (especially with the sweet background music sung by the birds in the garden)! All the rooms are equipped with a blue sofa, a small glass desk and chair, a pretty painting hanging on the wall, a satellite television (18 channels), quiet individual air-conditioning, an electronic safe with a code (2 euros a day), a mini-bar fridge, an direct international telephone line, as well as free Internet connection in the rooms located around the patio. The windows in the rooms look out over the patio or the street. As for the bathrooms, they are clean, nicely decorated and adorned with fresh flowers. Their amenities include a bathtub fitted with a handle and a flexible showerhead, a toilet, a bidet, FP Hoteles hospitality products, a magnifying mirror, tissues, a double washbasin and a hair-dryer. Room-service is available from 7:30am to 11:00pm. The 6 junior suites also have a lounge and a king-size bed. We recommend room no. 401 with its private solarium terrace and deckchair. The unrestricted view of San Gil's church is superb.

    Overview 7.70 /10

A superb classical 3-floor building with a yellow façade, built in 1901 by architect Jose Espiau, houses the San Gil hotel. The details of Mudejar influence and the bow windows are delightful. The hotel is a member of the Spanish hotel group FP Hoteles and it is considered to be one of the city's most beautiful buildings. This family home was transformed into a hotel in 1922, the year of the Universal Exhibition, and was renovated in 2000. The three floors hold 64 rooms which are easily accessible with the lift. Access ramps have been installed and room no.101 is perfectly adapted to people in wheelchairs. On arrival, it is hard to miss the beautiful 'Art Nouveau' style telephone box which stands in the lobby, not to mention the flower-filled garden, full of bird song, which is home to palm trees and a stately hundred-year-old cypress tree that the birds seem to have adopted. The tables and chairs installed in the garden mean that you can have a drink, a meal or simply read your newspaper, while listening to the gentle birdsong. On the rooftop of the hotel, you will find a rectangular 5 and a half ft-deep pool in the middle of a panoramic solarium, surrounded by deckchairs. The pool is open from 10:00am to 8:00pm, from April to October, and from its height, you can admire San Gil church.

    Food and drink 7.95 /10

The a la carte restaurant La Calesera serves breakfast from 7:30am to 11:00am, lunch at any time of the day and dinner until 11:00pm. The restaurant hall has a capacity of 60 guests, but you can also eat outside on the terrace. The meals consist of delicious 'Pata Negra' Iberico ham and other Spanish specialities, which can be enjoyed to the sound of the birds singing. On very hot days, you will not be able to resist a delicious Hagendaas ice-cream.

    To know

A free baby-sitting service is available here, and there is a computer at your disposal if you wish to surf the net. Do not forget your swimsuit though! There is a pool on the hotel's panoramic terrace, which is open from April to October. The hotel is not in the city centre, but set a little out of the way in the north of Seville, however, the distances are not too great: the cathedral and district of Santa Cruz are a mere 20-minute walk away.

    Accommodation tip:

Room 101 is adapted for the disabled. We recommend Junior Suite 401 with its private solarium terrace and deckchair. The view of San Gil church from the hotel is superb and unobstructed.

As its name suggests, this hotel from the Eurostars chain is located in the neighbourhood of Cartuja, which was built to host the Universal Exposition of Seville in 1992. However, not only is it in this neighbourhood, it is actually within the Olympic Stadium itself! This makes it an especially appealing place to stay if you are going to watch a match or any other event being held there. The guest rooms overlooking the stadium are particularly eye-catching. However, you are best off arriving by car or by taxi, because otherwise you will have to cross an immense and rather unattractive car park in order to get there. Also, the hotel is a long way from the city centre, and does not have a lot of facilities.

The Barceló Renacimiento was one of the hotels built to provide accommodation for the 1992 Universal Exposition, and boasts a large number of rooms (295). Although it is set away from the historical centre, its location has the advantage of being very close to the Isla Magica theme park and the Isla de la Cartuja, a very famous and important scientific research centre. Its modern design is eyecatching and it has even been compared to the Guggenheim museum. However, the thing we liked most about the hotel was all the space: there is a park measuring 10,000m² as well as spacious communal areas and a swimming pool. Nevertheless, the minimalist interior can appear a bit cold in spite of the presence of plant-covered walls and a few trees.

As soon as you set foot inside the hotel you'll find yourself in a modern Andalusian-style courtyard with a small fountain and stylish furniture with a very pleasant feel to it. You are also sure to receive a very heartfelt welcome here and should feel free to ask at reception should you have any questions or queries whatsoever. The inside part of the breakfast room is also worth special mention. All that's really missing is a nice pool for swimming a few lengths on a hot summer's day!
