In a good location, next to the Macarena Basilica, the Tryp Macarena meets the standards required of a Sol Meliá city hotel. It has a large swimming pool with beautiful views of the city and a sun deck where you can relax and enjoy the view. Fans of classic interiors will appreciate the corridors in the hotel, with their soft carpets and wallpaper with sculpted medallions depicting ancient scenes. You will undoubtedly also appreciate the buffet breakfast that serves something for everyone: various kinds of juices, cereals, breads, eggs, hot dishes, and gluten-free foods.

    Location

As its name suggests, the Tryp Macarena is located opposite the Macarena Basilica, a 10 minute walk from the Alameda de Hércules, 1.5 mi from the cathedral, and 5.5 mi from the airport (15 minutes by car).

    Accommodation 7.95 /10

The Tryp Macarena has 331 guest rooms that typically play host to groups and conference guests. Given the U shape of the building, some of the rooms have views of the city's walls, some overlook the square, and some have a view of the courtyard. The style of the interiors is quite standard. The curtains are blue and yellow to match the carpet and, despite the double glazing, you can still generally hear the noises from the street below. The headboards are a combination of wood and mirrors and, above the bedside tables on either side of the bed, gilded lamps create a different atmosphere for the evening. The rooms are bright, the closets are large, and there is a free safe for guests to use. A few pictures on the walls provide a dash of colour. The superior rooms have a lounge while the family rooms (10 in total) have a double bed, a single bed, and a sofa-bed that can sleep a child. Alternatively, you can choose to stay in one of the hotel's 5 adjoining rooms. Decorated in blue and white marble, the bathrooms are bright and equipped with a bath/shower and a telephone. The hospitality kit contains everything you could possibly need: a dental kit, shaving products, a shower cap, a comb, a shoe buffer, and L'Oreal shampoo. Finally, a bamboo in a mini vase offers a nice touch decor in the rooms.

    Overview 7.95 /10

The Tryp Macarena first opened in 1973 and was renovated in 2001. During our visit in June 2010, the façade was undergoing maintenance. When you walk through the entrance of this large, modern, 5 storey building overlooking the square, you find yourself in a huge lobby. The reception desk is on your left, decorated in light-coloured tiles. Beside reception are two telephone booths and a large lounge (called 'Torre del Oro') furnished with light-coloured armchairs. At the end of the lobby is an Andalusian courtyard with white and yellow arches, and a colourful fountain where you can relax and listen to the sound of the water. The fountain is decorated with a number of small toads. At the far end of the courtyard is a shop selling souvenirs, wallets, and old posters of the city. The bar, open daily between 12:00pm and 8:00pm, is located beside the lobby and is decorated in a mixture of wood and glass. What really makes a visit to this hotel worthwhile though, and what distinguishes it from other hotels, is the terrace on the 5th floor. A sundeck equipped with small tables and a drinks machine looks out over Seville. On one side, you can admire the old town and on the other, you have views over the more modern part of the city. Needless to say, the views from up here are breathtaking. Towels for the swimming pool are stored behind a counter. The large rectangular pool is up a few steps, surrounded by wrought iron railings and plenty of deckchairs.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

On the ground floor, near the courtyard, the breakfast room and the La Muralla restaurant are located beside one another. Every morning, from 7:30am to 11:00am, guests can enjoy a huge breakfast buffet with varied and diverse dishes: a table full of biscuits and cakes, an area with different kinds of bread, another with cold meat and cheeses, cereals, yoghurts, and fruit juices, and a corner reserved for hot dishes. The room is decorated with glass chandeliers and upholstered pink chairs. The restaurant is also furnished in a typically Spanish style and serves à la carte lunch and dinner. You can choose between a plate of cured ham or a baby lettuce salad with anchovies for as a starter, and from various types of eggs, rice, chicken supreme, or diverse meats for a main course.

    To know

In the lobby, there is often a box on the reception desk to collect entries for one of the various competitions organised by the hotel. The first prize generally consists of a complimentary stay at the hotel. If you like sushi bars, you will undoubtedly enjoy the one in the hotel, whether you eat in the restaurant or in your room.

As its name suggests, this hotel from the Eurostars chain is located in the neighbourhood of Cartuja, which was built to host the Universal Exposition of Seville in 1992. However, not only is it in this neighbourhood, it is actually within the Olympic Stadium itself! This makes it an especially appealing place to stay if you are going to watch a match or any other event being held there. The guest rooms overlooking the stadium are particularly eye-catching. However, you are best off arriving by car or by taxi, because otherwise you will have to cross an immense and rather unattractive car park in order to get there. Also, the hotel is a long way from the city centre, and does not have a lot of facilities.

The Barceló Renacimiento was one of the hotels built to provide accommodation for the 1992 Universal Exposition, and boasts a large number of rooms (295). Although it is set away from the historical centre, its location has the advantage of being very close to the Isla Magica theme park and the Isla de la Cartuja, a very famous and important scientific research centre. Its modern design is eyecatching and it has even been compared to the Guggenheim museum. However, the thing we liked most about the hotel was all the space: there is a park measuring 10,000m² as well as spacious communal areas and a swimming pool. Nevertheless, the minimalist interior can appear a bit cold in spite of the presence of plant-covered walls and a few trees.
