NABQ BAY SOUTH SINAI RED SEA 1 SHARM EL SHEIKH EG Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt -

Amy Adejokun Section editor

A friendly hotel designed to combine Ancient Egyptian architecture with contemporary design. The only resort in Sharm el Sheikh which can claim to look Egyptian is El Hayat. Fun yet could be seen as slightly cheesy, the designers here have taken the temple concept to new heights! On two levels, the resort feels a little cramped for sunbathing and it is not on the beach. El Hayat makes for a nice stay in Sharm but can feel a little claustrophobic due to the buildings being close to the pools, thus not leaving much open space.

    Location 4.0 /10

El Hayat, not to be confused with the Hyatt Regency, is in Nabq Bay, 9 kilometres from Sharm el Sheikh International Airport.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The accommodation buildings consist in two level mini temples. The hotel owner had fun here! The buildings surround both pools which can be noisy as there is entertainment all day long and the noise is still audible in the rooms. There is only one room category and all are decorated in a similar contemporary style with sleek bathrooms. There are no bathroom products which is a little disappointing since the bathrooms look fairly nice ? apart from the shower curtains, which have seen better days. The rooms have all the expected commodities, including plasma screen televisions, a safe and tea and coffee-making facilities. All guests receive bathrobes and slippers. Some of the rooms do have views onto neighbouring unfinished construction work.

    Overview 8.20 /10

As cheesy as it may seem, El Hayat gets full marks for effort to maintain its Egyptian roots! The main building has been built to resemble the Karnak Temple in world-famous luxor, along the River Nile - hard work carrying luggage up the temple stairs! The lobby is however very modern and minimalist in its design. Shades of black, greys and white have been used in the lobby which can feel a little cold but again, El Hayat scores highly for creativity in trying to combine ancient Egyptian architecture with contemporary design. The lobby bar makes for a calm place to have a drink and catch up on the day's news in one of the comfortable leather sofas. Even some staff members are dressed in ancient Egyptian attire! The staff is very friendly and willing. The lobby leads to an exterior terrace with pool table and then onto the smaller pool area which feels cramped. The walls surrounding this area are very close to the pool, reducing sunbathing hours. The pool is rectangular and frankly not very exciting. The resort is on two levels; up the stairs from the smaller pool area is the main pool. Here guests are really isolated in the middle of the Egyptian tomb-like accommodation buildings which leave no room for desert or sea views.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The facilities include Hatshepsut main restaurant, which is a little dark although in the same sleek style with Wenge stained furniture as in the rest of the resort's interiors. There is the Nefertari Café, Philae Lobby Bar and Lounge also.

    Beach 7.70 /10

The resort shares its beach with the Laguna Vista Resort across the road, as El Hayat is a 2nd line hotel and therefore not on the beach. The beach can be reached via shuttle (every 15 minutes) or by walking through the Laguna Vista Beach resort which can take a while. The beach however is highly entertaining, especially in the evenings - with the Pataya open-air nightclub, and bar, the Bedouin tent, the bar and the two à la carte restaurants lining the beach, it remains calm and quiet. Not cramped at all, the beach consists of one long flat stretch of sand. The beach furniture is wooden and looks worn, as do some of the deck chair mattresses. The jetty is also very long compared to other jetties in the area.

    To know

Open in 2008, the resort is one in a million in Sharm el Sheikh and is definitely worth a stay if what you're looking for is something Egyptian! There are a few shops at the lobby entrance.

Very small and intimate, the Laguna Vista Garden is perfect to get away from it all. Guests stay in quaint round private villas planted around a green flowery garden. More of a hotel than a resort, the Laguna Vista Garden is ideal for couples or families looking to spend some quality time together relaxing around the pool.

The Tropicana Grand Azure, not to be confused with its sister hotel across the road (the Tropicana Azure Club), is a large complex on the beach. The outdoor areas are very pleasant as is the beach. There is a generally relaxed atmosphere that is well suited to families and groups of friends.

A surprisingly very attractive resort with all the amenities a guest should expect from a holiday in the sun. Whilst retaining the Egyptian touch, the Laguna Vista Beach resort is elegant and relaxing whilst staying extremely varied in its bars and places for guests to relax, giving the area a real village feel. One of the most, if not the most attractive resort we have visited, the Laguna Vista Beach is definitely in our top 5.

The Oriental Resort is a relaxing version of a large resort. Its gardens divide up the large concrete buildings making the stay more pleasant. There is a spa worth mentioning for its high quality treatments and good organisation. The Oriental is ideal for a week-long stay with the family or a group of friends. Couples may be seeking a little more peace and intimacy.

The Amway Oyoun, previously a Hilton Hotel, sets itself apart from many of the shoddy resorts found in the area due to its fairly good quality finish. On the beach, the site is fairly big, but the atmosphere remains calm and relaxing.

Club Magic Life is by far one of the best resorts we have reviewed in Nabq Bay. Not too big, extremely green and with good quality facilities, Brits may be phased by the German invasion here, but if after peace and quiet with good food and a good beach, in a good quality establishment then this one's for you!

The Jaz Belvedere Hotel is easily one of Sharm el Sheikh best quality resorts. With its beautiful interiors and very well maintained exteriors, the Belvedere is more of a hotel than a resort. Directly on the beach, the hotel is small enough to retain intimacy and large enough not to feel claustrophobic after a week. The Belvedere is definitely one of our favourites.

An all-round good quality hotel compared to most hotels in Sharm el Sheikh. The extension of the Hilton Shark's Bay is neat and well maintained and is separate from the original part of the resort. There is also nothing Egyptian about the place; one could be anywhere in the world. This part of the hotel lacks in atmosphere but is relaxing and guests are guaranteed a fairly good quality room.

The Oriental Rivoli is without doubt one of the classiest hotels in Sharm el Sheikh. Its sumptuous decoration must be the finest in the resort and all of its services exude quality, from its staff to its food. Best suited for couples or groups of friends, due to its lack of animation or a kids club, it is the perfect place for relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation. Recommended whole-heartedly by Easyvoyage!
