Falcon Hills, Om El Sid - Charm el-Cheikh Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt -

Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Falcon Hills is another small, budget option in the Hadaba zone of Sharm el Sheikh. It is a compact, rather quiet place which is suitable for friends, couples or families where the needs of each would be modestly met. Expect nothing exceptional at this hotel, but here and there are little touches which stand out making the place a little more appealing. If money is a little tight, or you are looking for a cheap base for pursuing activities such as diving or lazing around, the Falcon Hills is a good bet.

    Location 7.84 /10

Situated in Ras Um Sid, or the Hadaba region of Sharm el Sheikh, the hotel is located 13 miles from the airport and around 5 miles from Naama Bay, the neighbouring zone. Two of the hotels three beaches are located just a few minutes shuttle bus ride away while the third id in Naama Bay.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

From the exterior gives a rather good account of the hotel with its tall palm trees flanking the entrance but then the rather bizarre and underwhelming snail themed fountain on the small square just in front of the hotel. The humble, characterless lobby, whose reception desk is on the left, just next to the hotels two shops (jewellery and provisions), features a seating area as well as a bar straddling both the hall and the restaurant which is adjacent to it. The hotel has two swimming pools: a main one with a separate kids pool and another smaller one which is heated in winter. The main pool, which is rather peaceful, seemed, on our visit anyway, to be favoured by the older guests of the hotel and there were no spare sun beds going. Due to the very close proximity of the surrounding buildings, the sun dips below them rather early. The smaller pool does have the right number of sun beds, however if everyone lazing around the edge were to get into the pool, it would be quite cosy! The wellness centre is home to a rather musty smelling gym with just a few machines, two featureless massage rooms, a sauna which looks brand spanking new, a rather large, albeit grubby hammam, a jacuzzi and a beauty salon. The animation team consists of just two members, however the enthusiasm of the girl we met was contagious and the hotel's staff could do worse than to take a page out of her book. The team split their time between the two hotels where during the day they keep everyone occupied with exploits such as water polo, group dancing and bingo tournaments, while in the evening there is the show which could feature a singer, belly dancing or karaoke. As well as the diving centre which trains its students in the hotel pool, there is a table tennis table, a tennis court and a billiard room. For children there is a play area with nicely made wooden structures, however parents must supervise their kids at all time as there are no staff to survey the area. There is both a clinic and pharmacy on the premises. The general upkeep of the hotel is fairly good, although sometimes a bit rough around the edges, such as the surround of the main swimming pool. What greenery there is is nicely maintained and the outdoor spaces of the Falcon Hills can be very agreeable.

    Overview 7.20 /10

Of the 136 rooms, 132 are standard rooms and all are appointed in a similar, modest fashion. Wooden head boards, framed in green, wrought iron match the rest of the room's furniture, namely the bed side table, the dresser and its mirror and the baggage stand. The television stands rather lamentably on the dirty fridge although one touch that does brighten up the room is the small bunch of flowers on the dresser. The bathroom, which is still in a decent condition, has a small bathtub, no toiletries, although a similar array of colourful flowers as in the main room. Each room has air conditioning and a safe but no hairdryer.

    Food and drink 6.20 /10

The hotel has one main restaurant with 130 or so covers. It serves all three meals throughout the day, although the choice is relatively limited in comparison to other hotels. Unlike many hotels there is a lof of English themed cuisine such as fish and chips and fish fingers. There is a selection of soups and salads, pizzas and pastas, sandwiches and grilled meats as well as a rather unhealthy children's menu. Each day there is also a special which will be displayed in the restuarant. A full selection of international and local beverages is available too.

    Beach 8.20 /10

The hotel has, quite commendably for its size, three hotels for its guests to choose from. The first, Palmas Beach, which is shared with a number of other hotels, is divided into two, with upper and lower parts. Despite being very quiet, the quality of sand is not fantastic and it can get pretty windy. The two areas, however, are completely flat and there is a direct access to the water as well as jetties for diving. There are enough loungers (a little old) and parasols for the number of sunbathers and a snack bar on the beach can meet modest needs. The water, as elsewhere, is extremely clear and is a good area for diving. Reef Beach, the second, sits on a promontory above the Red Sea and below, amongst the very rocky terrain, you'll find excellent coral and heaps of fish in crystal waters. The sand up above is of a good quality and the ground is perfectly flat. There are more than enough sun beds for all and plenty of shade provided by the attractive parasols. Entry into the water is of course not direct; you have to descend the steps and dive in off the end of the jetty, but the effort is well rewarded. At the back of the beach at the very top of the cliff, the Ristorante di Maria serves up quality Italian fare in a great setting at both lunch and dinner. The service, conducted by the charming Maria herself, is very attentive. If you need a break from the endless international buffets served in any Sharm hotel, this is the detour you need to make. Wind Beach, in Naama Bay, the neighbouring zone, has its own restaurant and trendy bar and is quite tightly packed with loungers. It enjoys great quality sand, good diving opportunities and a view of the entire bay.

    To know

Just across the road from the Falcon Hills is its sister hotel the Falcon Inn Viva. Guests from one are free to use the facilities of the other, for example the wellness centre at the Inn Viva. Guests however cannot dine at the hotel in which they are not staying.

This gargantuan complex is quite simply in a class of its own. You can take any aspect of the hotel, its rooms, its spa, its eateries, its views or its staff and you'll find everything is top draw. If it is top of the range you are after for in Sharm then you can't go far wrong in choosing the Royal Oasis, perfect for couples and families looking for the very best in service and facilities in a setting to die for.

Part of the Spanish hotel chain, Sol Melia, the Sol Cyrene is great for guests wishing to spend maximal amounts of time outdoors. The pool and the beach areas are pleasant although the interior of the hotel isn't very inspiring. The hotel feels secluded which is a good quality to have in the area. The beach is one of the best we have seen in Sharm although it can get a little crowded.

The Tropicana Azure Club, not to be confused with the Tropicana Grand Azure just across the road, is not on the beach but does have a very pleasant pool area planted with palm trees. The pool itself is large, so a good choice for guests with children who are after a little sunbathing with peace of mind. The rooms are of a good standard but the food may leave some guests disappointed.

An ideal hotel in which to relax or practice sports.

If there was a Sham el Sheikh hotel alumni, the Helnan would be part of the old boys club. This grand edifice right in front of the Red Sea is one of the resort's original hotels although you'd never know it from the way it has been looked after. Popular with foreign tourists (Italians, Russians, British) as well as Egyptians, it is suitable for families, couples or groups of friends. With a great location, good infrastructure and friendly staff you need look no further for your Naama Bay base.

The Jaz Belvedere Hotel is easily one of Sharm el Sheikh best quality resorts. With its beautiful interiors and very well maintained exteriors, the Belvedere is more of a hotel than a resort. Directly on the beach, the hotel is small enough to retain intimacy and large enough not to feel claustrophobic after a week. The Belvedere is definitely one of our favourites.

An all-round good quality hotel compared to most hotels in Sharm el Sheikh. The extension of the Hilton Shark's Bay is neat and well maintained and is separate from the original part of the resort. There is also nothing Egyptian about the place; one could be anywhere in the world. This part of the hotel lacks in atmosphere but is relaxing and guests are guaranteed a fairly good quality room.
