The Raffles is housed in a large, mythical 19th-Century palace on a verdant island a stone's throw away from Singapore's colonial district. An institution in Singapore, and a charming one at that, it instantly immerses you into the colonial ambience of the last century. It has plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from, including the Long Bar, a magnet that attracts lots of tourists eager to try the famous house cocktail, the Singapore Sling. Its high quality spa, stylish and comfortable suites and great sense of welcome are the icing on the cake.

    Location 8.0 /10

The hotel is located at 1 Beach Road (there was a beach here in the 1960's!), a stone's throw from the colonial district and Singapore river. The City hall underground station is just opposite, beneath the Fairmont hotel, close to the shopping centres; and Changi international airport is 16 mi away. The journey takes 25 minutes by taxi ($25) when the traffic is flowing well, and 45 minutes using the underground ($3).

    Accommodation 8.45 /10

The spacious, high-ceilinged guest rooms in the Raffles are decorated in the British colonial style, with period furniture and a teak floor, and they are provided with the most up-to-date facilities, including a satellite television (25 channels), a large free electronic safe, a telephone, WiFi internet access (charged), discreet air-conditioning and a ceiling fan, a mini-bar refrigerator and 24-hour room service. All the rooms are different and each suite has its own name, for example Cathay (the old name for China), or Raffles (Singapore's founder). As for the bathrooms, they have a bathtub, a large separate shower and lots of sophisticated hospitality products, as well as a hair-dryer, bathrobes, traditional slippers and a set of scales. The toilet is separate.

    Overview 8.45 /10

The building housing Raffles, which dates back to 1887, has been classed a national monument since 1987 and its last major renovations took place in 1991. It is named after Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of the city, who landed where Singapore now stands on 28 January, 1819. The hotel belongs to the Raffles Hotels and Resorts group, which is now affiliated to the Canadian group Fairmont. The 103 suites are spread throughout the four wings of the two-floor colonial-style white building, which is served by two lifts and surrounded by several tropical gardens. The lobby that you will enter was originally the ballroom, and it is a stylish setting with a period rug, marble floors and period furniture including a Chinese vase and a clock that has been ticking for more than 100 years! Sometimes, birds fly into the lobby from the large, well-ventilated patio adorned with a pretty wooden balustrade. On the roof there is a large rectangular swimming pool surrounded by a sun terrace with cushioned deckchairs, and the pool bar is open from 7:30 am to 7:00 pm. Beach towels are provided here free of charge. It is very pleasant to wander around the many green areas, savouring the scent of 55,000 plants and flowers and 110 tree species.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

The Raffles has no less than 12 restaurants! The Raffles Grill,in the lobby, is overseen by a French chef and serves excellent French a la carte cuisine, and even has its own small private area. Also in the lobby is the Tiffin Room, famed for its Indian specialities, which also serves varied international cuisine as a buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lunch is served from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm, and dinner from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The Tiffin Room's traditional afternoon tea is also renowned, served from 3:30 pm to to 5:00 pm in an elegant setting to the sound of a harp. Raffles Courtyard, in the first-floor arcades, is the place to head to for seafood specialities. There is also a choice of 4 bars to enjoy your favourite drinks: The Bar and Billiard, with its two huge period billiard tables, its cigar cellar and its brandy list, the Writer's piano bar, which has hosted the likes of Rudyard Kipling, Joseph Conrad and Ernest Hemingway, the Martini's bar and the famous Long bar, surely a must on the itinerary of any visitor to Singapore for its famous Singapore Sling cocktail. This is also the only place in the whole city-state where you can drop anything on the floor: the shells of the peanuts that come with the cocktail! The floor is so covered with them, they crunch under your every footstep! The decor of this dual-level bar brings to mind a 1920's Malaysian plantation.

    To know

Whatever you do, be sure to make time to stop off at the Long Bar on the first floor of the Raffles to try the famous Singapore Sling cocktail. It is the only place in Singapore where you are allowed to drop anything on the floor: your peanut shells! In the past, the palm leaves hanging from the ceiling to fan the air were activated by hand! Raffles contains a free museum, open from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, and a cookery school. You can also buy delicious chocolates made on the premises. The Raffles Amrita spa consists of 6 massage and treatment rooms, including one designed for couples. The American cosmetics brand Kerstin Florian is used for the treatments. Inside the Victorian-style Jubilee Hall, which can accommodate up to 388 guests, there is a piano that is over 100 years old. The sports enthusiasts among you might like to make use of the 6 tennis courts at the neighbouring Fairmont hotel. The Raffles is a city within a city, and forty different shops are located in its arcades, including an ice-cream shop, a chocolate shop, a bakery, a hair dresser's, a beauty salon, a luxury clothes shops and even a florist's!

      • Advantages
