Located just a stone's throw away from the colonial district and the Singapore River, the Swissotel The Stamford is an upmarket establishment housed in a skyscraper which was for a long time the tallest hotel in the world thanks to its 940 ft stature! It is also right at the heart of Raffles City, a complex comprised of various convention centres and extensive shopping malls, not forgetting the neighbouring Fairmont Hotel, boasting numerous restaurants, as well as a direct underground connection. The 'piece de resistance' of the hotel though, has to be the panoramic views across Singapore afforded by the Equinoxe bar on the 70th and top floor.

    Location 8.0 /10

The hotel is located at 2 Stamford Road, a short distance from the Colonial District and the Singapore River, opposite the famous Raffles hotel and alongside the Fairmont hotel. The City Hall tube station is directly underneath the hotel, in the vicinity of the shopping mall. Changi International Airport is some 17 mi away. Traffic allowing, you should expect a 25 minute taxi ride to get you there ($25) or three-quarters of an hour if you choose to take the tube ($3).

    Accommodation 8.45 /10

The guest rooms at the Swissotel The Stamford are spacious (34m▓) and offer beautiful panoramic views across Singapore, particularly those on the higher floors. A small balcony overlooks the pool area and, in the distance: Saint Andrew's Cathedral; the Supreme Court and its dome; the Victoria Theatre and concert hall; the skyscrapers of the financial district; Singapore Fly (the biggest Ferris wheel in the world); the harbour; and sometimes even Indonesia and Malaysia on a good day! The interior is modern and trendy, with carpeted floors, 2 queen size beds, a glass-top desk, an armchair, a satellite television broadcasting 25 channels, a free electronic safe that is big enough to hold a laptop, air conditioning, a telephone, a minibar refrigerator with tea and coffee-making facilities, an iron and an ironing board, ADSL Internet access (ú24 per day), and a flashlight. As for the marble bathrooms, they include a bathtub with a flexible shower, elaborate hospitality products, tissues, a hair dryer, bathrobes and slippers, a shaving and toothbrush kit, bath salts, a magnifying mirror, scales, a clothes line, and a toilet. For an added touch of luxury in the suites, the bathtubs also have a built-in flat screen television and views of the harbour!

    Overview 8.45 /10

The Swisshotel The Stamford was built in 1987 and was, for a while, the tallest hotel in the world, at 286m. This rather charmless 70 storey skyscraper houses no fewer than 1,261 guest rooms, which is nothing to be sneezed at by any standards! It is open throughout the year, renovated annually, and has a total of 12 spacious lifts, each of which can hold up to 20 people at a time, which all make for an impressive collection of numbers! The neighbouring Fairmont hotel houses the Willow Stream Spa which, with its 35 treatment and massage rooms, is Singapore's largest spa and indeed one of the largest in Asia! If you feel like cooling off, you can take a refreshing dip in one of the hotel's 2 round swimming pools found on the 8th floor, 1m20 and 1m80 deep respectively. The solarium area has wooden deckchairs with cushions, parasols, and showers. The swimming pool bar serves a variety of cocktails from 8:30am till 11:00pm. Sports enthusiasts will be delighted by the huge gym and its state of the art facilities. It is open from 5:30am until 11:00pm and can accommodate up to 60 guests. The hotel also has no fewer than 6 tennis courts.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

Along with the neighbouring Fairmont hotel, guests have access to no less than 12 restaurants! You can have breakfast in a different setting every day: at the CafÚ Suisse, the Plaza Market CafÚ, the Copy Taen, the Prego, or the poolside terrace of the Alligator Pear. The food is always varied and of a high quality, so you are bound to find what you are looking for, be it home-made hot chocolate, fresh fruit juice (papaya, guava and orange), steam-cooked ravioli, waffles, pancakes, omelettes and even Asian specialities! For lunch and dinner, why not try out the various Japanese, French, Chinese or Italian dishes on offer. The CafÚ Suisse also offers a buffet option between noon and 2:30 pm, but if you want to enjoy a breathtaking view of Singapore sprawling at your feet, head for the Equinoxe bar on the 70th floor. The bar can accommodate up to 150 guests and it serves high tea from 3:30 pm until 5:30 pm and international cuisine from 6:30 pm until 10:30 pm. Very few restaurants can boast a view over an entire country, but in the distance you can even see as far as Malaysia and Indonesia! There is a stairway that leads up to the top of the skyscraper where you will find the New Asia club-bar which is open from 7:30 pm until 2:00 am. There is also a small room where you can enjoy a cigar. However, if it's fine French food you're looking for, you should look no further than the gourmet a la carte restaurant Jaan. You will need to book in advance though if you want to be sure of a seat, as it is a small restaurant which can accommodate a maximum of 22 people.

    To know

The wireless and ADSL Internet access is quite expensive here so we recommend that you go and have a coffee at the neighbouring Starbucks where you can surf the Internet for free. Guests staying at the Fairmont Hotel have access to the facilities at the neighbouring Swissotel and Raffles hotels. There are no fewer than 1,000 boutiques and 300 restaurants in the huge neighbouring shopping malls of Raffles City. Some of the guest rooms, as well as the Equinoxe bar on the 70th floor, offer a breathtaking view of Singapore's Formula 1 racing track and the night races held during the month of September. The rest of the year you can enjoy the view of Saint Andrew's Cathedral, the Supreme Court and its dome, the Victoria Theatre and concert hall, the skyscrapers of the financial area, the Singapore Fly (the biggest Ferris wheel in the world) and the harbour. You can even see Indonesia and Malaysia in the distance! The hotel was named in memory of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, who docked in the future Singapore on 28th January 1819.
