Hotel Sun village Hotel 0 star
Sissi, Greece
Amy Adejokun Section editor

Located at the very entrance to the small village of Sissi, the only thing sunny about the small and undeniably charmless Sun Village is its name! Built lengthways, perpendicular to the seafront (which has rocks where the beac should be!), it is probably best suited to holiday-makers who would not be too bothered by the very basic facilities.

    Location 3.0 /10

The Sun Village is located, rather remotely, at the entrance to the small village of Sissi, just under 2 mi from Malia on the north-east coast of Crete and 9 mi from Heraklion International Airport.

    Accommodation 4.70 /10

The hotel's 102 guest rooms are housed in two long rows running perpendicular to the sea, with the various rectangular buildings standing next to each other in a line. Some of the rooms have been renovated, and there is a vast difference between these rooms and those which have not yet had their makeover and which require attention in terms of sound-proofing, lighting and cleanliness. The rooms are small though, and there is very little room to move around in them, although they do have a small kitchen area and the layout and (new) furniture in the renovated rooms is more reflective of western standards. As for the tiled bathrooms, they are tiny and have a washbasin, a shower and a hair-dryer. Everything in the rooms appears to be of poor quality, and whilst amenities include a small television, a refrigerator (payable locally) and a telephone, there is no guarantee that they work! It is also worth noting that there is a charge for both the air-conditioning and the safe of ?7 and ?2 per day, respectively.

    Overview 5.20 /10

The small establishment, built in 2005, appears to be something of a 'mish-mash', and as soon as you cross the threshold into the small entrance hall with its outdated decor, you will notice that everything is crammed together. There is a television area and a bar, though the pool table occupies a lot of the much-needed space here. As you follow the path, which is surrounded by a high chain link fence, you will first come across a sports pitch, before you encounter the eclectic architecture and communal areas. They have even built a small snack bar on the synthetic lawn area, which is quite amazing given the unappealing nature of the place, not to mention the lack of facilities (just a few plastic chairs). A little further along you will find the hotel's only swimming pool, which is small and filled with seawater, and what little empty space there is around it is filled with a handful of wrought iron deck chairs. A small children's play area has been created on one side, but the equipment is wooden so you'll need to watch out for splinters!

    Food and drink 5.20 /10

All three meals of the day are served in the small, outdated restaurant, which is located behind the reception and consists of a few tables where breakfast is served from 7:30 am to 9:30 am, lunch from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm and dinner from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. There is another small adjoining room, but the tables and chairs are rather crammed in here too, and there is no terrace for guests to enjoy al fresco dining under the Cretan sun. Oddly enough, the chef sometimes plays the synthesizer....

    To know

The hotel is open from April to October. Although the hotel is located on the seafront, the coastline is made entirely of rock, so bathing is certainly not recommended in this area. However, there is a promenade which is perfect if you want to wander off for a quiet stroll. This hotel is not to be recommended to the disabled. Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout the hotel.
