    Location 9.88 /10

The Marbell hotel stands on the far left of Soller's bay, up on the hillside, a few yards only from En Repic beach, which is on the other side of the promenade lining the superb bay of Puerto Soller. The bay is surrounded by spectacular mountains which steeply drop into the sea; it is 660 ft from the harbour and 2 mi from Soller, accessible on a wooden tramway which passes through orange groves (the journey takes 15 minutes and costs ?4). A new tunnel to Palma, which is 16 mi away, reduces the journey to the island's capital to 30 minutes, and the airport to 40 minutes. The toll for the tunnel to Soller will set you back ?4.45. If you have time, you can drive along the scenic route over Soller's pass, or even better: why not go on the traditional wooden train which has been linking Soller to Palma across glorious mountain scenery since 1912.

    Accommodation 7.45 /10

The guest rooms in the Marbell are quite small, but they are not without their charm, thanks to the tiled floors and white walls adorned with a painting. All the rooms have two single beds, a wooden desk, and an armchair. Their amenities include air conditioning, a telephone, a key-operated safe available for a fee, and a tiny satellite television. However, there is no fridge. The rooms have a beautiful view from their large balcony, which is furnished with two white plastic chairs and a round table, as well as a washing line. Half of the rooms look out over the sea, with the other half facing the mountains, but in both cases the view is superb. As for the bathrooms, they aren't very spacious, but they are nicely decorated with elegant patterns and are fitted with a bathtub and a flexible shower, a toilet, and a hair-dryer. However, you will not find any hospitality products, so remember to bring your toiletry bag with you!

    Overview 8.20 /10

Built in 1984 and renovated in 2007, the Marbell consists of 90 guest rooms in a 4 storey building provided with a lift. On the other side of the building, overlooking the mountains, a small stone stairway leads through an enchanting flower-filled garden to the 1.9m deep heart-shaped pool, which is open from 9:00am to 8:00pm. The solarium terrace is a very peaceful space equipped with deckchairs, showers and parasols, and offers a breathtaking panorama over the bay of Puerto Soller and the mountains plunging down into the sea in the background. Remember to bring your own towel. There is also a 16 inch deep paddling pool for children. The pool setting is enchanting, nestled as it is among steep rocks covered in cacti and flowers - a true oasis of vegetation where guests can relax to the lulling sound of birdsong.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

All meals are served as a buffet in a beautiful restaurant upstairs which is not lacking in the charm department, with chandeliers hanging from its white ceiling and china plates and pretty paintings hanging from its blue walls. The restaurant veranda gives guests the opportunity to have their meals outside while admiring the beautiful bay of Puerto Soller. Breakfast is served from 7:45am to 9:30am, lunch from 1:00pm to 2:30pm and dinner from 7:30pm to 9pm; the cuisine consists of delicious Mediterranean dishes.

    Beach 7.70 /10

All you need to do is walk across the promenade to get to En Repic beach, on the left-hand side of the bay. The setting is exceptional, with the fishing harbour to the right, the two lighthouses at either end of the bay and the magnificent mountains that plunge into the sea. There is also a river that flows gently into the sea. The water is very calm and clear and protected from the wind and waves by the bay. A lifeguard watches over swimmers all the same, and a flag is hoisted to indicate the level of risk. There is not very much space on the beach however, and the only equipment consists of a few plastic deckchairs and showers. A pedestrian walkway running the length of the bay links the beach to the port, with bars, restaurants and shops dotted along the way. The whole of the beach and harbour area is a vehicle-free zone.

    To know

The Marbell hotel stands directly opposite Puerto Soller beach, and therefore offers splendid views of the harbour and the bay. The whole of the beach and harbour area is a vehicle-free zone. The hotel is very peaceful, with no organised entertainment. If you come here with children, bear in mind that there is neither a mini-club nor a playground for them; but a babysitting service is available for a fee, on request. In terms of the clientele, a lot of the guests are French-speaking (including Belgians and Quebecois) in the high season. Four computers are available for guests to surf on the web at a reasonable price: 20 minutes for ?1 (most other Majorcan hotels charge ?1 for 10 minutes). The region of Puerto Soller is ideal for mountain bike rides. A hike is organised for free every week (except in July and August) with a qualified guide, and a Majorcan picnic is included for full-boarders. The hotel is open from March 26th to November 4th. None of the rooms are adapted for disabled guests.

Ideally located for guests seeking to relax in the heart of the Majorcan mountains, the Gran Hotel Soller has all the facilities of a 5 star hotel as well as a magnificent façade. It is a true haven of peace and tranquillity. It is also an ideal departure point for exploring the island, for people wishing to see the various types of landscape it has to offer (sea, cliffs, creeks and mountains), and to get away from the noise and crowds of places like El Arenal and Magalluf.

Nestled on the hillside above the sublime bay of Puerto Soller and surrounded by majestic mountains, the Es Port Hotel is housed in a fortified family mansion that dates back to the 17th century. The building really amounts to a castle, complete with a dungeon, a Baroque chapel, and an old olive press that has been converted into a bar. All of this is set amid the lush green surroundings of orange and lemon trees. This is a charming little place where you'll be welcomed as if you were visiting your aunt out in the country. It is certainly one of our Majorcan favourites!

Nestled above the magnificent Puerto Soller bay, where high mountains plunge into the sea, the Suliar Palace doesn't really live up to its exceptional location; indeed, the word 'palace' is rather inappropriate. Neverthelss, Suliar Palace is a very peaceful establishment, with two swimming pools, including one indoor pool, a sauna, a hammam and a jacuzzi, but it could certainly do with a serious makeover and it is not very well maintained.
