The small hotel, Casa Valeria and its restaurant are located in Sosua town in the Puerto Plata province. As the hotel is so small, there are few facilities to speak of, but it is comfortable and the rates are low, so for guests on a budget it's a good option. The hotel isn't on the beach, but it is a good base to explore the rest of the area from for guests coming by car. The hotel is ideal for guests staying in the area for a couple of days.

    Location 4.25 /10

The hotel is located in the small town of Sosua, a small beachside village close to Cabarete in the Puerto Plata province. Puerto Plata town is about an hour away and Cabarete, about 20 minutes. The nearest attractions are the restaurants and bars in town - although you have to be strong-willed to ignore the plethora of prostitutes that creep out after 5:00pm. Definitely not one for the kids.

    Accommodation 5.70 /10

There are 11 rooms in total, all of which are found around the small pool of the hotel. The categories include standard, luxury and apartment rooms. All are slightly different; some have twin beds, double beds and king size beds. The size of the rooms is the main differentiating factor. They all have an old generation television, a small fridge (empty), a safe, and air-conditioning. All rooms have a shower as opposed to a bath tub and no toiletries are provided, so make sure to bring your own. Most rooms are smoking, but non-smoking rooms are available upon request. The studio is about 32m² and has a kitchenette. The studios can accommodate an extra bed. Like in the restaurant and at reception, the colours inside are a bright palette of blues, yellows and oranges.

    Overview 5.70 /10

This small hotel comprises rooms built around a small pool with a restaurant next door. Fairly pleasant and comfortable, the hotel doesn't have many facilities, but it has complimentary Wi-Fi.

The décor isn't particularly inspiring, although we did like the bright yellows, blues and oranges used through the hotel. The furniture is outdated and for the mot-part garish.

    Food and drink 5.70 /10

Guests can have their meals at the restaurant just next door. Serving local and international fare, the restaurant is also popular with the locals. All rooms here include breakfast, which is served in the restaurant. Lunch and dinner are à la carte and not included in the room rate. Guests can bring their own wine here at no extra charge. As far as the décor goes, the restaurant is colourful with wooden tables and chairs and is a mid-range establishment.

    Beach 5.70 /10

The beach, Sosua Bay, is just a 10-minute walk away. The beach is lined with wooden huts selling all sorts of holiday souvenirs. Some have also been converted into bars and restaurants. This area of Sosua is the seediest with prostitutes, some under-aged, in the company of middle-aged (or older) men, both local and foreign.

The Topacio Azul, one of the few resorts in Sosua, sits in a privileged spot on a low cliff looking out to Sosua Bay, a view that is easy to get lost in - until a pumping party yacht whizzes into view that is. Sosua is one of those places that could have been a quaint little village by the sea full of local charm, but instead it has given way to the darker side of hedonism. The resort itself dominates the bay and is just a few steps from Sosua Bay beach. A typical resort with fair facilities, it used to be two hotels, the Sosua Bay and Victorian House, which have now come together to form the one. Topacio Azul is a reasonable enough hotel for holidaymakers wanting to stay at an all-inclusive resort.

Sosua by the Sea has a great location and great sea views, but it's seen its hey-day and needs a complete refurbishment. The hotel is really just a base for exploring the rest of the province, as the rooms are extremely basic and the facilities few and far between; even the pool could do with a new floor. Guests from wide-ranging backgrounds and nationalities come to stay here and the general atmosphere is generally quiet and relaxing.

The Piergiorgio, although still rides on its hey-day reputation, is an eerie and crumbling hotel with its beautiful location as one of the few draws. Opened back in 1997, the hotel hasn't really undergone any major works since the owner passed away although it could do with a full refit. The hotel is located in Sosua, Puerto Plata province, and it isn't on the beach although its balconies sit over the turquoise water. The rooms are a bit grim and dated.

El Colibri is a small hotel located in the centre of Sosua. It is fair to say that the hotel has seen better days and doesn't really offer much to the guest who wants a pleasant base while on holiday. We've classed this hotel as a two-star due to its dire need of a renovation and lack of facilities and service. Although the hotel is in Sosua, the beach is a fair walk away and although the small town has lots of shops, restaurants and bars, most brim with prostitutes as soon as the clock hits 5:00pm.

The Casa Veintiuno is one of the best places to stay in the Sosua neighbourhood. Small and quiet and run by a charming Belgian couple, Saskia and Marc, staying here is just like staying at friends' summer house. Located just acorss the road from Sosua Bay beach, the small boutique hotel is a pleasant and clean pied-à-terre to spent a couple of days before moving on to explore another area of the country. Ideal for couples and small group of friends.
