El Colibri is a small hotel located in the centre of Sosua. It is fair to say that the hotel has seen better days and doesn't really offer much to the guest who wants a pleasant base while on holiday. We've classed this hotel as a two-star due to its dire need of a renovation and lack of facilities and service. Although the hotel is in Sosua, the beach is a fair walk away and although the small town has lots of shops, restaurants and bars, most brim with prostitutes as soon as the clock hits 5:00pm.

    Location 5.04 /10

Sosua is a small beachside village about 20 minutes from Cabarete and an hour from Puerto Plata town within the Puerto Plata province. The town is divided into three sectors: El Batey, which is where you will find most tourists, Sosúa Abajo, and Los Charamicos.

The hotel is located in the centre of Sosua town and although the ocean runs to the back of the hotel, there is no beach access. The nearest beach is about 15 minutes' walk away.

    Accommodation 5.70 /10

In total there are 21 rooms, meaning that the hotel is fairly quiet most of the year-round even when full. The clientele that stays here is of an older generation, so for young'uns looking for a party this isn't the place to come.

The rooms line the pool, so have direct access. They all have a small terrace (with a view of the pool, gardens and neighbours) and air-conditioning. The rooms are dark and dingy and don't really hold any of the typical holiday atmosphere attributes one might hope for. Although clean, the rooms need to be completely renovated - everything from the garish furniture to the over-used mattresses needs to go.

    Overview 4.70 /10

Right from the first moment we arrived here, the hotel proved to be disappointing - and we are not talking about its grubby pool that needs refitting, or the deck that needs redoing, or the lobby, which looks like it has seen better days in the hotel's 12-year history. We're talking about simple reception service; we rang the bell at reception but no one came. Half an hour later, there was still no one. We had to go to the back of the hotel to find someone to help us at reception. Once we had found the right person, who was an extremely bubbly character, we continued our inspection of the sights.

As mentioned before, the pool area needs a complete refit, as does the accommodation and especially the hut at the end of the garden that says 'spa' on it. The garden, very well kept and the hotel's only positive draw, could also do with a clear-up by the abandoned building close to the pool. The left-over - what was that? A BBQ maybe? - bits of construction materials and unfinished projects need to go.

We liked the fact that the hotel is attached to a language school, which is a great way of learning while on holiday.

    Food and drink 5.70 /10

There is room service until 10:00pm at an extra charge. There is a small bar area that has recently been renovated to the front of the hotel and a more elaborate restaurant just behind this small bar area. Depending on the clientele, the menu is more or less extensive (usually less so). The restaurant doesn't look like it sees many guests stop by.

    Spa 3.7 /10

The hotel has a 'spa', although we prefer to call it an overheated oversized kennel at the end of the garden. It wasn't open during our visit and upon peering through the windows, it didn't look like it had been open for a long time. There is one massage table and no other facilities that one might expect to find at a spa.

    Beach 5.70 /10

The nearest beach is a 15-minute walk away.

The Topacio Azul, one of the few resorts in Sosua, sits in a privileged spot on a low cliff looking out to Sosua Bay, a view that is easy to get lost in - until a pumping party yacht whizzes into view that is. Sosua is one of those places that could have been a quaint little village by the sea full of local charm, but instead it has given way to the darker side of hedonism. The resort itself dominates the bay and is just a few steps from Sosua Bay beach. A typical resort with fair facilities, it used to be two hotels, the Sosua Bay and Victorian House, which have now come together to form the one. Topacio Azul is a reasonable enough hotel for holidaymakers wanting to stay at an all-inclusive resort.

Sosua by the Sea has a great location and great sea views, but it's seen its hey-day and needs a complete refurbishment. The hotel is really just a base for exploring the rest of the province, as the rooms are extremely basic and the facilities few and far between; even the pool could do with a new floor. Guests from wide-ranging backgrounds and nationalities come to stay here and the general atmosphere is generally quiet and relaxing.

The Piergiorgio, although still rides on its hey-day reputation, is an eerie and crumbling hotel with its beautiful location as one of the few draws. Opened back in 1997, the hotel hasn't really undergone any major works since the owner passed away although it could do with a full refit. The hotel is located in Sosua, Puerto Plata province, and it isn't on the beach although its balconies sit over the turquoise water. The rooms are a bit grim and dated.

The small hotel, Casa Valeria and its restaurant are located in Sosua town in the Puerto Plata province. As the hotel is so small, there are few facilities to speak of, but it is comfortable and the rates are low, so for guests on a budget it's a good option. The hotel isn't on the beach, but it is a good base to explore the rest of the area from for guests coming by car. The hotel is ideal for guests staying in the area for a couple of days.

The Casa Veintiuno is one of the best places to stay in the Sosua neighbourhood. Small and quiet and run by a charming Belgian couple, Saskia and Marc, staying here is just like staying at friends' summer house. Located just acorss the road from Sosua Bay beach, the small boutique hotel is a pleasant and clean pied-à-terre to spent a couple of days before moving on to explore another area of the country. Ideal for couples and small group of friends.
