The Piergiorgio, although still rides on its hey-day reputation, is an eerie and crumbling hotel with its beautiful location as one of the few draws. Opened back in 1997, the hotel hasn't really undergone any major works since the owner passed away although it could do with a full refit. The hotel is located in Sosua, Puerto Plata province, and it isn't on the beach although its balconies sit over the turquoise water. The rooms are a bit grim and dated.

    Location 4.62 /10

The hotel is located in Sosua, a small beachside village close to Cabarete in the Puerto Plata province. Puerto Plata town is about an hour away and Cabarete, about 20 minutes away. The nearest attractions are the restaurants and bars in town - although you have to be strong-willed to ignore the plethora of prostitutes that creep out after 5:00pm.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

In total there are 57 rooms, which are divided up between the old and new structures. The rooms in the old building need a complete makeover - the drab furniture and décor need to go in order to bring this property into the 21st century.

The rooms have matching dark red curtains and bed covers. Some rooms have tiled floors and others have an outdated dark red carpet. The TVs are all old generation and the double beds are two twins pushed together.

The strangest thing about the hotel is its unsettling eerie atmosphere, which reflects a happy but long-gone past.

    Overview 6.70 /10

Opened in 1997 by an expatriate Italian businessman and actor, the hotel was seen as the best one in the area, however, since the original buyer passed away, very little of the hotel's glitzy hey-day remains. Today, the hotel is run by the owner's wife and daughter.

Mr Piergiorgio originally bought the land to build a holiday home; the original building - the Victorian style casa - is still intact, although apart from a couple of tacky souvenir shops, it is no longer in use.

The Piergiorgio may have been a labour of love for its original owner, and might still be a symbol of love for his wife and daughter, but the truth is that something needs to happen to inject a bit of life back into the hotel. It doesn't look quite abandoned, but it does need a complete makeover for it to appeal to today's clientele.

The hotel has two buildings - the original part of the hotel with its grand staircase, and the newer addition, a basic block of rooms around the main pool. There is a lovely restaurant and gazebo where weddings used to take place, and the raised promenade and balconies of the hotel line the crystal clear waters below.

In terms of facilities, there isn't much else to speak of apart from complimentary Wi-Fi internet access throughout the hotel and swimming pool.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The hotel is also known for its Italian restaurant, which we didn't have the privilege of trying, but heard from the localsis that it is fairly good. The best part of the experience, is the setting: perfect for sunsets, tables line the edge of the hotel on its many balconies looking out to the ocean.

    Beach 6.70 /10

Although the hotel is close to the ocean, it is about 15 minutes' walk to the nearest beach.

The Topacio Azul, one of the few resorts in Sosua, sits in a privileged spot on a low cliff looking out to Sosua Bay, a view that is easy to get lost in - until a pumping party yacht whizzes into view that is. Sosua is one of those places that could have been a quaint little village by the sea full of local charm, but instead it has given way to the darker side of hedonism. The resort itself dominates the bay and is just a few steps from Sosua Bay beach. A typical resort with fair facilities, it used to be two hotels, the Sosua Bay and Victorian House, which have now come together to form the one. Topacio Azul is a reasonable enough hotel for holidaymakers wanting to stay at an all-inclusive resort.

Sosua by the Sea has a great location and great sea views, but it's seen its hey-day and needs a complete refurbishment. The hotel is really just a base for exploring the rest of the province, as the rooms are extremely basic and the facilities few and far between; even the pool could do with a new floor. Guests from wide-ranging backgrounds and nationalities come to stay here and the general atmosphere is generally quiet and relaxing.

El Colibri is a small hotel located in the centre of Sosua. It is fair to say that the hotel has seen better days and doesn't really offer much to the guest who wants a pleasant base while on holiday. We've classed this hotel as a two-star due to its dire need of a renovation and lack of facilities and service. Although the hotel is in Sosua, the beach is a fair walk away and although the small town has lots of shops, restaurants and bars, most brim with prostitutes as soon as the clock hits 5:00pm.

The small hotel, Casa Valeria and its restaurant are located in Sosua town in the Puerto Plata province. As the hotel is so small, there are few facilities to speak of, but it is comfortable and the rates are low, so for guests on a budget it's a good option. The hotel isn't on the beach, but it is a good base to explore the rest of the area from for guests coming by car. The hotel is ideal for guests staying in the area for a couple of days.

The Casa Veintiuno is one of the best places to stay in the Sosua neighbourhood. Small and quiet and run by a charming Belgian couple, Saskia and Marc, staying here is just like staying at friends' summer house. Located just acorss the road from Sosua Bay beach, the small boutique hotel is a pleasant and clean pied-à-terre to spent a couple of days before moving on to explore another area of the country. Ideal for couples and small group of friends.
