Sosua by the Sea has a great location and great sea views, but it's seen its hey-day and needs a complete refurbishment. The hotel is really just a base for exploring the rest of the province, as the rooms are extremely basic and the facilities few and far between; even the pool could do with a new floor. Guests from wide-ranging backgrounds and nationalities come to stay here and the general atmosphere is generally quiet and relaxing.

    Location 5.67 /10

The hotel is located on the El Batey side of Sosua, so not on the bay side. Sosua is in the Puerto Plata province about 20 minutes' drive from Puerto Plata town and the airport. The next town is Cabarete, about 5 minutes away by car. In the close surroundings, there are several shops just across the way for any holiday essentials or souvenirs.

Towards Sosua Bay, the beach is lined with shops and bars but the atmosphere is a little seedier due to an evident problem with prostitution in the area, (also in Sosua town), so gentlemen, take note!

    Accommodation 5.70 /10

In total there are 91 rooms split between several buildings. They range between studios to three-bedroom suites. The rooms are generally similar in terms of décor and furniture, and vary mainly in size. Although the rooms are spacious and some have lovely views, they could do with a lick of paint, new flooring, windows and furniture, which is outdated and chipped.

The studios have a king size bed or twin queen size beds, with a small living area with either a sofa or chairs. Standard suites have a king size bed and a sofa that pulls out into two single beds in the living area. These rooms also have balconies. The deluxe suites sleep two to four people and come with sea views and are generally more spacious. All rooms have (old generation) televisions, and en-suite batherooms all with bath tubs. There is a mini bar in all rooms (empty and can be filled at guests' request).

    Overview 5.70 /10

Sosua by the Sea is a small hotel built around a swimming pool right on the beach. Originally open in 1988, it doesn't look like it's had much of a renovation since. The entire hotel is outdated, with some of the rooms in dire condition. However, the overall atmosphere of the hotel is pleasant and relaxing due to the beautiful sea views.

In terms of facilities there is a small very basic gym that looks as old as the hotel, a pool, which could do with retiling, and a restaurant just next to the pool. Guests can order drinks from the small bar between the pool and the beach. The outdoor grill restaurant on a raised concrete platform close to the water also leads to the beach. Guests can also have a massage if they book in advance; the hotel does not have a spa, but it can call someone in to carry out a treatment.

    Food and drink 5.70 /10

The hotel has a main indoor restaurant next to the pool, a pool bar that is open throughout the day for drinks and snacks, and an open air grill restaurant that is open depending on the season. The main restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, presented as a buffet. Guests can choose to go all-inclusive or just opt for B&B. The hotel offers room service from 7:00pm-10:00pm.

    Beach 8.70 /10

The beach here is mid-size and can get a little crowded in high season as it is shared with a large neighbouring hotel. However, it is lively and the local Bachata music sets a real holiday scene. The beach is otherwise clean, with golden sands and beautiful turquoise waters.

    To know

Now, there needs to be a word of warning for visitors to the area as Sosua is renowned for prostitution and a lot of the girls are underage. You will find this is all over Sosua, from the beaches to the strip of market cabanas lining the bay. In the town of Sosua after 5:00pm, girls fill the bars, cafés and restaurants, and most are not just out for a nice evening among girlfriends. Young girls with middle-aged, or even elderly, Western men is not an uncommon sight either.

Sosua is a little different to the other towns of the country in that it welcomed a large community of Jewish refugees during the Second World War in 1939, and although most of the community has since left, a small Victorian synagogue remains in the village centre - to visit the synagogue, make sure to make an appointment with the owner (speak to the watchman) first as it isn't always open.

The Topacio Azul, one of the few resorts in Sosua, sits in a privileged spot on a low cliff looking out to Sosua Bay, a view that is easy to get lost in - until a pumping party yacht whizzes into view that is. Sosua is one of those places that could have been a quaint little village by the sea full of local charm, but instead it has given way to the darker side of hedonism. The resort itself dominates the bay and is just a few steps from Sosua Bay beach. A typical resort with fair facilities, it used to be two hotels, the Sosua Bay and Victorian House, which have now come together to form the one. Topacio Azul is a reasonable enough hotel for holidaymakers wanting to stay at an all-inclusive resort.

The Piergiorgio, although still rides on its hey-day reputation, is an eerie and crumbling hotel with its beautiful location as one of the few draws. Opened back in 1997, the hotel hasn't really undergone any major works since the owner passed away although it could do with a full refit. The hotel is located in Sosua, Puerto Plata province, and it isn't on the beach although its balconies sit over the turquoise water. The rooms are a bit grim and dated.

El Colibri is a small hotel located in the centre of Sosua. It is fair to say that the hotel has seen better days and doesn't really offer much to the guest who wants a pleasant base while on holiday. We've classed this hotel as a two-star due to its dire need of a renovation and lack of facilities and service. Although the hotel is in Sosua, the beach is a fair walk away and although the small town has lots of shops, restaurants and bars, most brim with prostitutes as soon as the clock hits 5:00pm.

The small hotel, Casa Valeria and its restaurant are located in Sosua town in the Puerto Plata province. As the hotel is so small, there are few facilities to speak of, but it is comfortable and the rates are low, so for guests on a budget it's a good option. The hotel isn't on the beach, but it is a good base to explore the rest of the area from for guests coming by car. The hotel is ideal for guests staying in the area for a couple of days.

The Casa Veintiuno is one of the best places to stay in the Sosua neighbourhood. Small and quiet and run by a charming Belgian couple, Saskia and Marc, staying here is just like staying at friends' summer house. Located just acorss the road from Sosua Bay beach, the small boutique hotel is a pleasant and clean pied-à-terre to spent a couple of days before moving on to explore another area of the country. Ideal for couples and small group of friends.
