Would you say that the perfect holiday has to be relaxing, preferably with a good book, a hammock, and a private pool within a toe's reach? If so, this is the place for you. Set in a lush environment overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the Stonefield's 17 villas are independent little havens of peace. This is a place we recommend to couples who want some peace and quiet but not to those who love a good beach: the hotel doesn't have one and the closest is a good 20 minute walk away.

    Location 6.28 /10

On the Caribbean coast of Santa Lucia, at the foot of the Petit Piton, the Stonefield is a 45 minute drive from Hewanorra international airport and approximately 1h to the south of Castries. The closest city is the small coastal village of Soufrière, a 20 minute walk and a 5 minute drive away. The surrounding area offers nothing in the way of entertainment. There are waterfalls in the jungle and hot water springs nearby.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The Stonefield has 17 villas, of which 14 come as single room units, one is a double room unit, and two are 3 room units. The single room villas come in two categories: the standards have a small swimming pool but no air-conditioning, while the superiors come with air-conditioning and a small separate sitting room.

Access to the villa is through an initial door that opens onto the garden or the large terrace with a hammock or wooden garden furniture. Nearly all of the rooms afford a full sea view, which is in some cases slightly obstructed by the vegetation. The standard villas are completely open, with no glazing, but each window is fitted with a taught mosquito nest so that you can sleep in peace. The 'queen size' beds are quite high and also surrounded by a mosquito net. These open rooms make it easy to admire the scenery, listen to the nightlife in the jungle, or enjoy the cool night air drawn in by the ceiling fan. A true pleasure! However, if you're bothered by noise and light, you might not find it quite so enjoyable.

The bathrooms are fitted with a nice outdoor shower and all have a hair-dryer, ironing board and iron, bathrobes, and hospitality products... All of the rooms come with a fully-equipped kitchenette, but you won't find a TV, as it doesn't fit in with the spirit of the hotel.

    Overview 7.60 /10

The first thing you'll notice about the Stonefield are its lush gardens. It was built on a slope in 1989 and includes small buildings that feature a local island style. The hotel stands in a sprawling 27 acre estate of tropical vegetation. The Stonefield was designed with the tranquilitty and well-being of its guests in mind. The Bamboo Door spa (two treatment rooms and a large choice of treatments), the terraced Mango Tree bar-restaurant and a boutique are the only facilities on offer. A gym was to be added to the list by March 2011.

Next tot the restaurant, the Stonefield's main swimming pool is rather small, but never crowded since each villa has its own private pool. You can see the sea and the Petit Piton of Santa Lucia from everywhere in the hotel. There is a price to pay for this permanent view though: the hotel is built on several very steep levels on the slope of the hill.
Numerous excursions leaving from the hotel are available, including a short walk that will take you to a petroglyph at the foot of the establishment, which was used as the hotel's logo (the route is badly indicated).

    Food and drink 8.00 /10

Simplicity and quality. The Stonefield has only one restaurant: the Mango Tree. It has a roof but is open on all sides and commands a spectacular view of the sea. The setting is enjoyable despite the fact that most has been made of the available space by cramming the chairs and the tables together. The menu changes every day and offers a choice of 4 or 5 starters, main dishes, and desserts. Local cooking and international cuisine are on offer. Some of the vegetables, fruits, and herbs come directly from the hotel's vegetable garden. The food is fresh and excellent (and dinner will cost approximately £30 per person).

    Beach

By the end of 2011, the Stonefield will have built a path to Malgretoute beach, the closest to the hotel but quite difficult to access. The walking time should thus be reduced from 20 to 5 minutes. This grey sandy beach is at the foot of the Petit Piton, in a calm and secluded area. If you go there early in the morning you'll catch the fishermen at work and there are two local restaurants if you're feeling hungry.

There is a free shuttle service that takes guests to the beach at either La Jalousie Plantation or the Anse Chastanet beaches 6 times a day. As is the case all along the Santa Lucia coasts, these two beaches are public ones. However, when you get there, you can buy a 'beach pass' that gives you right to a deckchair, a parasol, and other hotel facilities.

    To know

Some of the Stonefield's villas are fitted with a proper kitchen and there are two grocery stores in Soufrière, and a market on Friday and Saturday mornings.

The hotel was built on a slope, so if you're not on good terms with climbs and steps, this is probably not a good place for you.

Adaptors, flashlights, and umbrellas are available at reception.
