    Location 9.0 /10

The Jalousie is the only hotel located between the famous Pitons de St. Lucia, a site beyond compare on the island. However, this means that it is set far back from anywhere that may offer some festive activities. Only the waterfalls in the jungle and the hot springs are nearby. Expect around 10 minutes to get to the peaceful little town of Soufrière. Hewanorra international airport is a good 30-minute drive away and it will take you one hour to get to Castries.

    Accommodation 9.59 /10

The guest rooms are located in two separate distinct locations. The 11 rooms called Sugar Mill make up the building of the same name next to the beach. The other 42 rooms that are currently available are all villas nestled on the heights of the resort's grounds. On the one hand they benefit from a magnificent view, while on the other, the beach, the swimming pool, and all the other facilities are quite a distance away. Even though a little cart can come and pick you up on request, the location is still not exactly ideal.

This being said, once you get to the top, you won't be disappointed. The villas are grouped into little hamlets of Caribbean-style houses with a butler designated for each one. The standard villas are called Luxury Villas and even at this level, The Jalousie Plantation pulls out all the stops: a swimming pool and private terrace, a huge flat-screen TV, a separate shower and toilets, an iPod dock, a DVD player, etc. In wood-clad surroundings painted in white, the modest and refined decor creates a genuine impression of comfort and serenity. What luxury! In addition to all of this, the superior villas have a larger terrace and a sitting room with a sofa beside the bedroom.

    Overview 8.30 /10

After having left the road, several hairpin bends lead you right up to the reception in the middle of lush foliage. The hotel's vast domain covers over 100 acres of rainforest between the road and the beach at the foot of the Petit Piton. The hotel's buildings are set around the former plantation owner's house which now serves as a restaurant and holds 3 different bars. A second restaurant is in the works on the ground floor of this building and is expected to be open by the end of 2011.

Towards the beach, a small pool surrounded by gardens leads to the large swimming pool, which is also set to be renovated, next to the beach. The setting is simply gorgeous. A large play area for children is currently being built just beside this area. As it is, the establishment does not currently have a kids club per se, but there are activity leaders to take the little ones under their wings and accompany them in all the activities the resort has to offer. The sports facilities (tennis courts, a gym) and the spa are located on the heights of the grounds. There is even a croquet pitch!

The very new Rainforest spa (opened in December 2010) deserves a special mention here. Composed of tree houses linked by bridges spanning over a stream and lush foliage, it includes 7 treatment rooms, a temascal (an Amerindian steam dome), and a specialist skin care clinic. Only local products from the richness of the land are used in the treatments: bananas to eliminate wrinkles, coconuts for exfoliating, aloe vera to make you look younger, and cocoa butter for hydrating. Signature treatments include Bamboo Massages, Indian massages and hot rock therapies, and Ayurvedic and holistic treatments.

    Food and drink 8.30 /10

A third restaurant is set to open its doors by the end of 2011 so for now you'll have to make do with the two existing ones!
The Bayside restaurant opens directly onto the beach and is completely open to the sea. You can enjoy all of your meals in the elegant but laidback ambiance you will find here, and the cuisine on offer is Caribbean and international. The bar of the same name is just beside it and offers service indoors, at the pool, and on the beach.
The second restaurant, The Great Room, is adorned with a thousand lights every evening. Located on the first floor of the main building, this is the place where you can put on your cocktail dress or dress shirt! The international cuisine is based on local products and includes a wide selection of starters, soups, salads, pasta, meats, fish, deserts, and of course wine. You can enjoy a before or after dinner drink at the Cane bar. Right beside the restaurant, this stylish bar specialises in rum. Afterwards, to continue the evening, just a few steps will take you to the well-named Late Night bar. Chic and cosy decor, a dance floor, and an outdoor terrace, this is " the place to be " once the sun has set.

    Beach 9.30 /10

Despite its incomparable location between the two Pitons, The Jalousie Plantation cheated a little too when it came to making its beach perfect. The white sand, imported from Guyana, was laid over the natural grey sand to give it more of that picture postcard appeal. It's true that this would have been the only element missing. Calm water, wooden deckchairs and parasols, coconut trees, numerous water sports, a PADI dive centre, etc... Plus, there is no supplementary charge for any of the motorised activities. What more could you ask for?

    To know

During our visit, The Jalousie Plantation was undergoing some renovation work to modernise its facilities. 66 million pounds have gone into bringing this establishment, which first opened in 1981, up to date. Everything should be finished by the end of November 2011, when The Jalousie will become the Sugar Mill.
Before Hurricane Thomas hit in 2010, The Jalousie Plantation had a total of 108 guest rooms. Unfortunately, a landslide destroyed a large part of these. Subsequently, its British owner decided to rebuild the resort differently and, once everything is complete, there will be 83 guest rooms.

An art lover, the owner exhibits part of his private collection in the hotel. Among the many works that can be admired between the lobby and the beach restaurant you will come across a Matisse. Will you be able to find it?
