Opened in 1993, the Jinène has been sharing its park with the Royal Jinène, a 4-star hotel from the same group, since 2004. Being a 3-star hotel, the Jinène will suit those on a limited budget. It may have been renovated in 2007 but the decor in both its common and guest rooms is still outdated. The establishment does benefit, however, from the shared facilities of the two hotels (well-being centre, sports grounds) and the beach.

    Location 5.84 /10

On the seaside, 12 mi from Monastir airport, the hotel is located in the city centre of Sousse. It takes about an hour and a half to reach Hammamet by car.

    Accommodation 6.20 /10

Beware of the surprise waiting for you behind the doors of the 223 guest rooms in the Jinène. The carpeting has entirely taken over, from the floor to the bedside tables. At least it hasn't climbed up the walls! Actually, the bed has also been spared and is instead covered with a green bedspread that matches the curtains. As for the amenities, they are fairly traditional for a Tunisian 3-star hotel: a safe at reception (and for an extra charge) and a fridge on request, but no Internet connection, central air conditioning, etc. The bathrooms as well have the strict minimum: a wash basin, bathtub and small soap. Don't forget your hair-dryer!

    Overview 6.70 /10

With its columns, its chequered flooring, its earthenware fountain, old armchairs and a marble counter, the entrance hall does little to set itself apart from its competitors. There are very few who would be able to guess that this hotel was renovated in 2007 and there is no way of knowing if the lobby actually received a new coat of paint. In fact, the renovations were mainly focused on the mattresses in the rooms, the bathrooms, the carpeting and the furniture. It may be well-maintained, but it is starting to become obvious in the style that this hotel was built in 1993! The rest of the common areas are limited to a restaurant, a bar in the lobby and a bar on the ground floor open at night. The Jinène also takes up a large part of the park it shares with the Royal Jinène. Guests thus enjoy the same facilities as its 4-star neighbour (a well-being centre, tennis courts, a mini-golf course, a children's club) as well as a shared beach.

    Food and drink 6.90 /10

The Jinène has its own main restaurant as well as the international à la carte restaurant it shares with the Royal Jinène. In the latter you will find a wide choice of pizzas, hamburgers, salads, grilled chicken, paella, omelettes, veal, etc. For those who didn't opt for the all-inclusive formula, these dishes are really cheap (between £2 and £5)! Settled in a pretty room decorated in shades of blue, green, yellow and white, at the main restaurant of the Jinène you will find a buffet of traditional international dishes setback from the middle of the room. In this case, just make sure you don't sit on the opposite side of the room! It's a bit of a shame that there isn't a theme restaurant (such as Tunisian for example)!

    Beach 7.70 /10

Although the Jinène cannot exactly boast being by the sea, it can be proud of the cleanliness of the trail that separates the hotel from the sandy beach. Like many of its competitors, this establishment is located in the second line of hotels back from the beach (about 150m). It is equipped with everything you need to sit back and relax (plastic deckchairs, mattresses and parasols) but at the time of our visit it was not very well maintained, with plenty of stones, weeds, etc. You might want to note that there is a sailing club nearby. This means that you will have the opportunity to go on a banana or pedalo boat ride, or go jetskiing, parasailing, windsurfing, water-skiing or sailing!

    To know

The Jinène shares its property with the Royal Jinène. Each of these has its own guest rooms and some of the communal areas (notably the main restaurant) but both share part of the relaxation facilities that can be used by guests at both of the hotels.

Built in the late 1960s, the Kathago el Ksar underwent a complete renovation in 2001. Far from resting on its laurels, this 4-star hotel is already focused on its next upgrades that should currently be underway. In the meantime, the Ksar can be proud of its well-maintained facilities. The guest rooms may not be a model of originality but the hotel compensates for this by offering bungalows in addition to its accommodation blocks. With a total of 449 lodgings, the hotel is far from being a small structure on the coast: avoid it if you are allergic to crowds!

With this princely name, you will expect quality services to match. Even though you are far from the splendour of Monaco here, its Sousse version isn't too bad. A pleasant 4-star hotel, accommodations at the Monaco consist solely of suites with kitchenettes. Far from the lively club resorts to be found in the area, it offers all the services of an aparthotel. Located on the waterfront, the Monaco also has a swimming pool and a spa.

Opened in 1969, the Marabout was one of the first hotels to be built in the small city of Sousse. Renovated and expanded, it now has a hundred guest rooms with a contemporary look. The other guests will just have to be content with the somewhat outdated standard rooms. However, everyone can take advantage of the leisure facilities, such as the swimming pool with its waterslides. Sure to be appreciated by the whole family!

Don't be fooled by this 4-star establishment's promising name. Opened in 1967, the hotel is far from being a palace! The only thing different about the Sousse Palace compared to the rest of the hotels at this seaside resort is its old-fashioned look. However, the hotel is scheduled to be closed for one year in 2012 in order to renovate its buildings from top to bottom. Check back in 2013 for the results!

We can't even count the number of Marhaba hotels there are in the city of Sousse! The Marhaba Beach itself shares a large complex with three others. Although they all operate independently, you should still avoid coming here if you're looking for a private setting! However, this can also be an asset, especially when it comes to the shared facilities. The Marhaba Beach may differ slightly from the others in terms of the communal areas, but its positive aspects include tasteful and modern new guest rooms as well as a location on the beautiful beach of Sousse.
