Opened in 1996, the only thing royal about the Royal Beach is its new ŕ la carte restaurant located on the top floor. Expanded in 2001, there are just 123 guest rooms in this hotel. It is ideal for those who like smaller establishments! However, if you enjoy sports and/or have children, this isn't the place for you, since there are no sports facilities (except for the swimming pool) or children's club. This 3-star hotel is best suited for couples on a tight budget.

    Location 10.0 /10

On the seaside, 12 mi from Monastir airport, the hotel is located in the city of Sousse. It takes about an hour and a half to reach Hammamet by car.

    Accommodation 5.90 /10

Despite being expanded in 2001, the Royal Beach is not a large establishment. In fact, the hotel only has 123 guest rooms consisting of doubles, triples and quadruples and all of them look outdated. While the decor in the old rooms was full of floral fabrics and earthenware, the new ones display a surprising cotton candy-coloured decor (headboard, bedspread, furniture). Barely any bigger, the "second generation" rooms do not appear to be more luxurious or modern than the old ones! As for the amenities, they are fairly traditional for a 3-star hotel: a safe at reception, no mini-bar or Internet connection, central air-conditioning, etc. The bathrooms also have the bare minimum: a wash basin, a bathtub and a small soap. Don't forget your hair-dryer!

    Overview 7.20 /10

Nothing from the outside indicates that the Royal Beach is anything but a typical resort hotel. You just have to enter into the reception area to realise that the hotel has managed to avoid all of the typical elements representative of mass tourism, despite the addition of the new rooms in 2001. Although it may not be a charming hotel, the Royal Beach is nothing like the giant complexes that are found all along the coast. You can get from point A to point B in less time than it takes to say it. You may, however, be disappointed with the leisure facilities, which are almost non-existent. The only thing you will find in addition to an outdoor rectangular swimming pool and a small indoor pool (strangely located around the hallways of the guest rooms) is a spa, which is managed by an external company. The hotel has plans to build a spa of its own but there is no date yet for when it is expected to open. Children will have to make do with the bit of entertainment that there is, since the Royal Beach doesn't have a playground or a children's club, and parents will have to make do with the water sports as the hotel doesn't have any other sports facilities.

    Food and drink 7.90 /10

Despite its small size, the Royal Beach is not lacking in dining possibilities, on the contrary! In addition to the usual main restaurant (with an international buffet), the hotel has a superb ŕ la carte restaurant. Although we didn't get to try out the international menu centred around fish and meat, we recommend that you do, even if it's just for the decor and cosy ambiance? Far from the restaurants that look like a snack bar, it has a setting that is worthy of a city hotel: elegant tiling, chandeliers, beautiful black chairs, tablecloths, etc. Open for lunch and dinner in summer (only in the evening in winter) the restaurant can be accessed from outside or from the area with the guest rooms. Finally, the Royal Beach also has a snack bar that can seat 80 and which looks out onto the sea. Here you will find a selection of sandwiches, pizzas and savoury crepes but also of international dishes like escalopes, chicken, pasta, etc.

    Beach 7.90 /10

The aptly-named "Royal" Beach compensates for its lack of facilities with its beautiful fine sandy beach. Located at the foot of the hotel, the large beach is probably its main asset. You will find all of the usual facilities here (deckchairs, parasols) but unfortunately they are a little outdated. At least you won't have far to go to reach them! Indeed, many of the hotel's competitors have had to settle for being one row back from the beach, on the other side of a busy street. You will also find a water sports club nearby, where some of the possible activities include banana and pedalo boating, ringo rides, jetskiing, kayaking and parasailing, all for an extra fee.

    To know

Opened in 2006, part of the hotel is renovated every year. The last renovation, in 2010, included updating the heating/air-conditioning and piping. The Wi-Fi is free in the lobby.

Built in the late 1960s, the Kathago el Ksar underwent a complete renovation in 2001. Far from resting on its laurels, this 4-star hotel is already focused on its next upgrades that should currently be underway. In the meantime, the Ksar can be proud of its well-maintained facilities. The guest rooms may not be a model of originality but the hotel compensates for this by offering bungalows in addition to its accommodation blocks. With a total of 449 lodgings, the hotel is far from being a small structure on the coast: avoid it if you are allergic to crowds!

With this princely name, you will expect quality services to match. Even though you are far from the splendour of Monaco here, its Sousse version isn't too bad. A pleasant 4-star hotel, accommodations at the Monaco consist solely of suites with kitchenettes. Far from the lively club resorts to be found in the area, it offers all the services of an aparthotel. Located on the waterfront, the Monaco also has a swimming pool and a spa.

Those on a tight budget can opt for its 3-star neighbour and member of the same group, the Jinčne. Guests staying here can use the facilities at the Royal.

Opened in 1969, the Marabout was one of the first hotels to be built in the small city of Sousse. Renovated and expanded, it now has a hundred guest rooms with a contemporary look. The other guests will just have to be content with the somewhat outdated standard rooms. However, everyone can take advantage of the leisure facilities, such as the swimming pool with its waterslides. Sure to be appreciated by the whole family!

Don't be fooled by this 4-star establishment's promising name. Opened in 1967, the hotel is far from being a palace! The only thing different about the Sousse Palace compared to the rest of the hotels at this seaside resort is its old-fashioned look. However, the hotel is scheduled to be closed for one year in 2012 in order to renovate its buildings from top to bottom. Check back in 2013 for the results!

We can't even count the number of Marhaba hotels there are in the city of Sousse! The Marhaba Beach itself shares a large complex with three others. Although they all operate independently, you should still avoid coming here if you're looking for a private setting! However, this can also be an asset, especially when it comes to the shared facilities. The Marhaba Beach may differ slightly from the others in terms of the communal areas, but its positive aspects include tasteful and modern new guest rooms as well as a location on the beautiful beach of Sousse.
