It may have a regal name but the Royal Jinène isn't very different from the other hotels along the coast. Opened in 2004, this traditional 4-star hotel can boast having modern facilities and everything you would expect a resort hotel to have. Those on a tight budget can opt for its 3-star neighbour and member of the same group, the Jinène. Guests staying here can use the facilities at the Royal.

    Location 1.0 /10

On the seaside, 12 mi from Monastir airport, the hotel is located in the city centre of Sousse. It takes about an hour and a half to reach Hammamet by car.

    Accommodation 7.90 /10

There's no need to count again, the Royal Jinène "only" has 103 double and triple guest rooms, which is surprising for a tourist resort where most of the hotels have at least 200 rooms! A negative point, however, is their decor, which is oddly matched and not very original: Tunisian rugs, outdated fabrics and modern tiling. We would have liked something similar to the traditional decor in the lobby. The amenities are typical of a 4-star Tunisian hotel: an old-fashioned television set, a direct telephone line, central air-conditioning, a mini-bar upon request and a safe for an extra chage. A little more "traditional" than the room, the bathroom could really do with a coat of paint, especially on the sealing around the bathtub.

    Overview 7.50 /10

Opened in July 2004, for the moment the Royal Jinène doesn't need any major renovations. For once, a 4-star hotel with a friendly-sized lobby, far from the huge and anonymous ones found in some of the other hotels. It must be said that the hotel only has 102 guest rooms. In addition to the unavoidable marble everywhere, the lobby also has some rather nice decorative elements, such as traditional Tunisian armchairs, arabesques and columns. The rest of the building is not much bigger, even if the Royal Jinène does have 5 storeys. However, the hotel does extend out on the complex it shares with its neighbour, the 3-star Jinène. Guests at both of the hotels have shared access to most of the facilities, like the well-being centre, the tennis courts, the mini-golf course and the children's club.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

Despite its size and the small number of rooms, the Royal Jinène is not lacking in dining possibilities! In addition to the main restaurant, the hotel has an à la carte restaurant where you will find a wide choice of pizzas, hamburgers, salads, grilled chicken, paella, omelettes, veal, etc. For those who did not opt for the all-inclusive formula, these dishes are cheap (between £2 and £5)! You can also enjoy the light dishes in some of the bars. At the reception, pool, beach, disco and Moorish cafe: all of the bars operate on an all-inclusive formula. Open from 6:00am to 10:00am, 12:00pm to 2:00pm and 6:30pm to 9:30pm, the main restaurant proposes a buffet of classic international dishes as well as a Tunisian night once a week.

    Beach 7.70 /10

Although the Jinène cannot boast being right by the sea, it can be proud of the cleanliness of the trail that separates the hotel from the sandy beach. Like many of its competitors, this establishment is located in the second row of hotels back from the beach (about 150m). It is equipped with everything you need to sit back and relax (plastic deckchairs, mattresses and parasols) but at the time of our visit it was not very well maintained, with plenty of stones, weeds, etc. You might want to note that there is a water sports club nearby. The activities proposed here include banana and pedalo boat rides, jetskiing, parasailing, windsurfing, water-skiing and sailing!

    To know

The Royal Jinène is in the same complex as the Jinène. Each of these has its own guest rooms and common areas (notably the main restaurant) but guests at both of the hotels share some of the relaxation facilities.

Built in the late 1960s, the Kathago el Ksar underwent a complete renovation in 2001. Far from resting on its laurels, this 4-star hotel is already focused on its next upgrades that should currently be underway. In the meantime, the Ksar can be proud of its well-maintained facilities. The guest rooms may not be a model of originality but the hotel compensates for this by offering bungalows in addition to its accommodation blocks. With a total of 449 lodgings, the hotel is far from being a small structure on the coast: avoid it if you are allergic to crowds!

With this princely name, you will expect quality services to match. Even though you are far from the splendour of Monaco here, its Sousse version isn't too bad. A pleasant 4-star hotel, accommodations at the Monaco consist solely of suites with kitchenettes. Far from the lively club resorts to be found in the area, it offers all the services of an aparthotel. Located on the waterfront, the Monaco also has a swimming pool and a spa.

Opened in 1969, the Marabout was one of the first hotels to be built in the small city of Sousse. Renovated and expanded, it now has a hundred guest rooms with a contemporary look. The other guests will just have to be content with the somewhat outdated standard rooms. However, everyone can take advantage of the leisure facilities, such as the swimming pool with its waterslides. Sure to be appreciated by the whole family!

Don't be fooled by this 4-star establishment's promising name. Opened in 1967, the hotel is far from being a palace! The only thing different about the Sousse Palace compared to the rest of the hotels at this seaside resort is its old-fashioned look. However, the hotel is scheduled to be closed for one year in 2012 in order to renovate its buildings from top to bottom. Check back in 2013 for the results!

We can't even count the number of Marhaba hotels there are in the city of Sousse! The Marhaba Beach itself shares a large complex with three others. Although they all operate independently, you should still avoid coming here if you're looking for a private setting! However, this can also be an asset, especially when it comes to the shared facilities. The Marhaba Beach may differ slightly from the others in terms of the communal areas, but its positive aspects include tasteful and modern new guest rooms as well as a location on the beautiful beach of Sousse.

Opened in 1996, the only thing royal about the Royal Beach is its new à la carte restaurant located on the top floor. Expanded in 2001, there are just 123 guest rooms in this hotel. It is ideal for those who like smaller establishments! However, if you enjoy sports and/or have children, this isn't the place for you, since there are no sports facilities (except for the swimming pool) or children's club. This 3-star hotel is best suited for couples on a tight budget.
