Don't be fooled by this 4-star establishment's promising name. Opened in 1967, the hotel is far from being a palace! The only thing different about the Sousse Palace compared to the rest of the hotels at this seaside resort is its old-fashioned look. However, the hotel is scheduled to be closed for one year in 2012 in order to renovate its buildings from top to bottom. Check back in 2013 for the results!

Location

On the seaside, 12 mi from Monastir airport, the hotel is located in the city centre of Sousse. It takes about an hour and a half to reach Hammamet by car.
Accommodation
7.50/10
With its 168 guest rooms, the Sousse Palace is one of the smaller establishments, not in terms of its size (since the rooms are located in a 12-storey building) but in the number of its rooms. You can consider this to be an advantage in a resort destination where most of the hotels boast having 300 rooms in their catalogue. Unfortunately, this won't be the case for long as the hotel has a project for building a second tower that will ultimately have 700 beds. For the time being, the decor in the rooms is not very original but is quite elegant thanks to the new tiling, the moulding, the headboards and the dark furniture. It's a pity that the bedspreads, the curtains and the bedside carpets aren't as chic. In terms of the amenities we were also surprised: in addition to a fridge, the rooms have a safe that will be free to use after the renovations. Note that the Sousse Palace has nine mini-suites and a presidential suite.
Overview
7.50/10
The Sousse Palace is only a palace in name. The entrance doors lead to an outdated interior, despite the fact that it was renovated in 2000. It's difficult to find the reception at first, since it is somewhat concealed by several lounge areas. Circular-shaped, it follows the "traditional" style found in Tunisian lobbies, with plenty of marble, huge mirrors and old-fashioned furniture. However, it makes up for this mundaneness with its lovely welcoming staff who just want to help you. In terms of the facilities, there is still a lot of work to be done. The hotel may have pretty rattan furniture, a large outdoor swimming pool, a beach volleyball court and a petanque pitch, but it doesn't have a spa or a playground for children. As for the children's club, it consists of just one room beside the swimming pool. This being the case, in addition to the renovations, the hotel also has plans to increase its facilities by notably adding a spa and many more guest rooms. We may be patiently waiting to see the new look (if one is indeed planned) and the new amenities, but we are not in a hurry to discover the second tower which will hold the new rooms.
Food and drink
7.50/10
Although the Sousse Palace only offers one restaurant in low season, it does have two others that open on June 1st: the usual snack bar and an international à la carte restaurant with a capacity for 80. As for the main restaurant, it can hold 320 people in a traditional marble-clad room. We did like the shades of grey and green, though, which were pleasant to look at. In addition to the classic international buffet, two theme nights are proposed at the Sousse Palace: Tunisian Tuesdays and Fish Fridays. The hotel also has several bars, most of which open at the beginning of high season: in the lounge, at the beach/swimming pool and the Moorish cafe.
Beach
7.00/10
The Sousse Palace cannot exactly show off about the size of its beach, which is right next to the public beach. However, it will probably be expanded at the same time as the hotel. For the time being, the establishment can be proud of its location right by the water, since many of its competitors have had to settle for being one row back, on the other side of a busy street. It is equipped with everything you need to sit back and relax (plastic deckchairs, mattresses and parasols) but at the time of our visit it was not very well maintained, with plenty of stones, weeds, etc. You might want to note that there is a water sports club nearby. The activities proposed here include banana and pedalo boat rides, jetskiing, parasailing, windsurfing, water-skiing and sailing!
To know
A real veteran, the Sousse Palace is the second hotel to have opened its doors in the city of Sousse. Open all year round, it is scheduled to be shut down in 2012 for some major renovations. Watch this space.
Located in the middle of Sousse, the Abou Nawas Boujaafar is to be remembered for its comfort, its service, and especially for its thalassatherapy centre. This address will fit relaxation and discovery stays.
This club is located at the edge of a nice beach, not far from downtown Sousse. Both young people and families will appreciate its friendly atmosphere, sports and numerous activities.
To be advised for friendly vacations at a reasonable price, the Salem is as good for families as for groups of friends. For those who love to party in the evening, the city of Sousse is not far.
Designer atmosphere for this hotel with a "fashion" decoration and a family clientele. Large spaces, bright colours, a huge swimming pool, entertainment for everyone, a hotel that we recommend to families.

Karthago El Ksar

Value for money7.12
Location1.0
Built in the late 1960s, the Kathago el Ksar underwent a complete renovation in 2001. Far from resting on its laurels, this 4-star hotel is already focused on its next upgrades that should currently be underway. In the meantime, the Ksar can be proud of its well-maintained facilities. The guest rooms may not be a model of originality but the hotel compensates for this by offering bungalows in addition to its accommodation blocks. With a total of 449 lodgings, the hotel is far from being a small structure on the coast: avoid it if you are allergic to crowds!

Le Monaco

With this princely name, you will expect quality services to match. Even though you are far from the splendour of Monaco here, its Sousse version isn't too bad. A pleasant 4-star hotel, accommodations at the Monaco consist solely of suites with kitchenettes. Far from the lively club resorts to be found in the area, it offers all the services of an aparthotel. Located on the waterfront, the Monaco also has a swimming pool and a spa.

It may have a regal name but the Royal Jinène isn't very different from the other hotels along the coast. Opened in 2004, this traditional 4-star hotel can boast having modern facilities and everything you would expect a resort hotel to have. Those on a tight budget can opt for its 3-star neighbour and member of the same group, the Jinène. Guests staying here can use the facilities at the Royal.

Marabout

Opened in 1969, the Marabout was one of the first hotels to be built in the small city of Sousse. Renovated and expanded, it now has a hundred guest rooms with a contemporary look. The other guests will just have to be content with the somewhat outdated standard rooms. However, everyone can take advantage of the leisure facilities, such as the swimming pool with its waterslides. Sure to be appreciated by the whole family!

Marhaba Beach
Easyopinions10.00
Value for money6.97

We can't even count the number of Marhaba hotels there are in the city of Sousse! The Marhaba Beach itself shares a large complex with three others. Although they all operate independently, you should still avoid coming here if you're looking for a private setting! However, this can also be an asset, especially when it comes to the shared facilities. The Marhaba Beach may differ slightly from the others in terms of the communal areas, but its positive aspects include tasteful and modern new guest rooms as well as a location on the beautiful beach of Sousse.

We can't even count the number of Marhaba hotels there are in the city of Sousse! Although it is difficult to stand out as a holiday resort in this city, the Royal Salem does have some notable extras. In addition to its modern rooms and large swimming pool with a waterslide, the hotel benefits from a splendid location right beside the beach.

Location10.0
Opened in 1996, the only thing royal about the Royal Beach is its new à la carte restaurant located on the top floor. Expanded in 2001, there are just 123 guest rooms in this hotel. It is ideal for those who like smaller establishments! However, if you enjoy sports and/or have children, this isn't the place for you, since there are no sports facilities (except for the swimming pool) or children's club. This 3-star hotel is best suited for couples on a tight budget.
