Amy Adejokun Section editor

Perfectly positioned on one of the Maldives' largest islands, the Lux* South Ari Atoll closed during the summer of 2016 for renovations that saw an entire rethink and expansion of its layout. Now a benchmark address for the archipelago, the resort combines relaxed luxury with a hint of cool. This is a hotel ideal for couples but which can also cater to families and groups of friends.

This hotel review is a translation from the French published on our French site, Easyvoyage.com.

A large resort entirely renovated in 2016 and well suited to those looking for Maldives luxury with opportunities for both relaxation and exploration.

    Location 8.0 /10

The appropriately named Lux* South Ari Atoll is situated right where you'd expect it to be, to the south of the Maldives' Ari Atoll. Around 30 minutes by seaplane from Malé's international airport, your stay actually begins at the base where Lux* has a lounge reserved for its clients waiting for a 'seaplane transfer' to the hotel. Air-conditioned and with a view over the lagoon, the lounge provides refreshments, snacks, discreet massages and attentive staff before a final flight over the atolls to the hotel. No time lost, you'll also be able to check-in before arriving at the resort.

    Accommodation 9.90 /10

In the rooms too, Lux* has managed to be different. The 193 lodges and villas are split into 7 categories. As is often the way with accommodation in the Maldives, you can first choose between rooms on dry ground or those on stilts. After that, rooms vary according to size (65 to 360m²) and whether or not they have a private pool. Whichever you go for, the decoration is resolutely contemporary, with whites and greys used as a backdrop on which to splash touches of bright blues and greens. >/p>

The standard rooms are called 'beach lodges'. They are the only accommodation option that come in pairs, with a connecting door, which is often appreciated by families. Furnished terrace with direct access to the beach, open air bathroom with bathtub and outside shower, king-size beds, as well as all the essential and superfluous extras (Wi-Fi, minibar, bathrobes and slippers, XXL TV with multimedia system, DVD, tea and coffee-making facilities) can be found in the rooms, as in all the other accommodation options.

Villas on stilts with a seven-metre swimming pool, beach villas with two bedrooms, villas resserved for adults with romantic deco and two-person shower, the presidential suite with the finest extras... the choice is large enough to accommodate the needs and wishes of all guests.

    Overview 9.45 /10

Dhidhoonfino is the name given to this island which, at two kilometres long, is one of the bigges islands in the Maldives, one of the hotel's major advantages. One of the best things about Lux* South Ari Atoll is that it take a lot longer than 5 minutes to see everything the island has to offer, meaning plenty of surprises during your stay in Maldivian paradise and plenty of good reasons to leave the luxury of your room. From the white sand beaches that ring the island and the beautiful blues of the atolls, to the languishing coconut palms, all the magic of the Maldives is to be found here. But Lux* also proposes numerous well-being activities and sports, concept restaurants and creative bars, even boat trips, so that everyone can find their balance between exploration and relaxation.

A spa treatment, meditation or yoga classes for a relaxing morning workout, snorkeling with a choice of 42 sites on the reef, a diving lession with whale sharks, a watercolour workshop, a coaching session with well known photographer Michael Freeman... Lux* South Ari Atoll regularly invites famous experts to spice up and diversfy their guests' stay.

Lux* hotels are all about ideas and attention to detail, like the bright red telephone box which stands under the palm trees by the reception. From here you can call anywhere in the world for free whilst staring out at the idyllic island.

    Food and drink 9.90 /10

With seven à la carte restaurants and seven bars, the hotel has a wide range of choice when it comes to food. Wherever you find yourself in the resort, you're never far from one of the 14 options. Each has a great atmosphere, with refined interiors. Amongst the newly refurbished options, Lux* counts Café Lux*, not far from the reception, as well as Beach Rouge bar and restaurant which serves up cocktails, ceviche, grilled fish, carpaccios and much more with a perfect view of the sunset.

We also particularly enjoyed the East Market, whose buffet pulls together all the allures of Asia cuisine with a plethora of options. Sat next door is Unami, an intimate and elegant bar and Japanese restaurant. Another great option is Allegria, the hotel's Italian and gastronomic restaurant. Tried and tested, you will dine extremely well here.

    Spa 9.7 /10

The Lux* spa is a haven of peace at the centre of the island. With its extremely large choice of massages and treatments, its cabins on stilts give wonderful views over the sea. Its zen lodge is dedicated to yoga, pilates, Tai chi, Qichong and meditation, making it a great spot for a wellness getaway. This is where Lux* hosts many of its original activities led by specialist trainers.

    Beach 9.90 /10

It's difficult to know where the hotel ends and the beach begins. Each lodge and villa has direct access to the sand and to a section of the beach with reserved deckchairs. The large gaps between the villas means you have plenty of privacy. The beach bar, not far from the reception and the diving centre, also hosts beach parties for those who prefer a festive atmosphere and a glass in their hand. There's also a fantastic range of water sports available at the diving centre, as well as PADI courses from Euro Divers.

    To know

Originally opened in 2005 under the name White Sands Beach, the resort was taken over by Lux* in 2008 under the name Diva Maldives and then Lux* Maldives. After four months of renovations, the hotel reopened in September 2016 as Lux* South Ari Atoll. At the end of 2016, Lux* will open a new, more intimate hotel in the Maldives' North Malé Atoll.

The Lux* South Ari Atoll is situated just an hour's boat ride from one of the best spots in the world for swimming with whale sharks. A unique and unforgettable experience.

The accommodation, restaurants, spa and swimming pools around the island are linked by small cars which arrive every 15 minutes. Guests in the villas on stilts can call a shuttle at any time. Bicycles are also available to those staying at the resort.

Children are more than welcome. The activity centre accommodates three to 12 year olds (large play area, lounge, dining room, activities organised all day). Teenagers (from 13 to 17) have a space reserved just for them, accompanied by a coach to take them on a tour of the island's activities: paintball, treasure hunts, introduction to kite surfing, Instagram workshops...

Unpretentious, Mirihi Island is indeed more of an island than a hotel which couldn't be further from its flashy neighbours. Named after a small yellow flower that grows on the island, Mirihi is covered in vegetation and has some of the archipelago's most beautiful beaches. The facilities are few, but sufficient and of good quality. Mirihi is a real break at home away home, and its effortless simple elegance is what sets it apart from the rest. The island's policy reflects that of Maldivian culture; being at one with nature. There are no televisions in the rooms, you won't find a note of loud banging entertainment, and there is no swimming pool - but to be honest, who needs a pool with a lagoon like this one? Private plunge pools, large bathtubs bigger than your living room, and over-pleasant butlers are not what you can expect to find here. However, that is not to say that the accommodation is of low quality; quite the contrary! Mirihi's strongest point however, is knowing how to welcome guests, making them feel truly unique, as the hotel slogan goes. Ideal for couples or families needing to spend some quality time together without the distraction of televisions and entertainment. Guests will also find a stunning beach and good nearby diving spots, not forgeting that Mirihi has a fantastic house reef.

The Conrad hotel is one of the largest hotels you will find in the Maldives. Spread over two islands linked by a bridge, the experience is very different here to that of other hotels. More animated than other spots, this isn't necessarily the best spot to come to if you are looking to top up on that Robinson Crusoe effect, however the resort looks beautiful and very stylish. It also boasts an endless variety of restaurants including the world's only under water restaurant, the Ithaa.
