    Location 8.97 /10

On Saint-Saviour's Road, 1,640 ft from the shopping centre of Saint-Helier. The ferry terminal is 1 mile away and the airport is 5 miles away. Allow 5 minutes for the transfer by boat and 15 minutes by plane.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

The 85 rooms have no balcony, except for 5 of them (facing the garden and pool). In total, only one third of the accommodation overlooks the pool. The other have a view over the town. 172 to 215 ft² in size: that is fine for a double room, but is much less comfortable when you add a 3rd or 4th bed. The furniture, in contemporary style, is in light wood. As for the facilities, only the superior rooms have a minibar. The rest is identical in all the rooms: tea/coffee kit, television, telephone, bathroom with bath, hairdryer. No welcome products except for a small bar of soap. Safe at the reception.

    Overview 7.20 /10

Built in 1971 and renovated regularly since (certain rooms were redone in 2005), the Apollo occupies a modern 3-storey building with a slate roof. But just because it has been renovated does not necessarily mean quality furniture. The design of the hotel is simple. The pleasantest communal area is the lounge-library. With light flooding in a bay window overlooking the pool, it is furnished with velvet armchairs and sofas. A lot of light and few people during the day: a nice quiet spot for reading a book or the paper. Entertainment takes place outside in the garden, which is enclosed by high walls and has a lawn and pool with water slide. The pool measures 130 x 43 ft and the loungers, not very numerous, are lined up along a wall: it is clearly a townhouse hotel rather than a seaside one.

    Food and drink 6.20 /10

The main restaurant's dining room boasts a view over the pool, but it does not have a terrace. The tables are too close together, but the design is nicely done. Breakfast buffet in the morning for cold dishes, and table service for eggs, hot drinks and British specialities. In the evening, meals are served "table d'hote" style, with a selection of starters, chef's specialities and desserts, meaning you can sample Jersey products (potatoes, fish, tomatoes and strawberries grown in a greenhouse in season). At lunchtime, there are soups, sandwiches, or a dish of the day available in the hotel's pub.

    To know

The Apollo is part of the same hotel group as the Club Spa, a boutique hotel 10 minutes away on foot. As its name suggests, it has a spa. Luxuriously fitted with state-of-the-art equipment, it has a steam room with aromatic herbs, an "experience" cabin (a shower in the form of tropical, temperate or stormy rain), and a seawater pool. A number of treatments are available, including ayurvedic massages, sea mud wraps, and salt and seaweed scrubs. From £45 per treatment.

The Queens is a lively hotel, with few rooms, and well-maintained facilities. It is neither in the town centre nor by the sea, but it makes up for its lack of location with access to the pool of a partner hotel 820 ft away.

A calm strip of water (in summer) surrounded by an abundance of ferns and oaks: a hotel occupying a prime site by the sea. There is no surrounding noise, even during high season. The Water's Edge is one of the rare seaside hotels in Jersey where you can be truly remote.
