One of two Divi Resorts in Barbados (with sister properties all over the Caribbean), the Divi Southwinds Beach Resort is also one of the few to enjoy a central location in St Lawrence Gap. A medium-sized property nestled in sprawling grounds, the resort features all-suite accommodation but is not technically beachfront. Boasting a fair range of facilities, Divi Southwinds is a respectable three star property.

    Location 10.0 /10

Divi Southwinds Beach Resort is located in the nightlife hub of St Lawrence Gap, or, "The Gap" for short. The Grantley Adams International Airport is approximately 20 minutes away, while Barbados's capital Bridgetown is a 15 minute westbound drive along the beautiful south coast.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

The majority of accommodation at Divi Southwinds is 1 bedroom apartment-style, on mezzanine levels looking down to a central courtyard. A large rock pool with waterfall takes pride of place on the ground floor, which in the evenings becomes the centrepiece of a cosy lounge area. The rooms themselves are clean, bright and comfortable. On the other hand, they are not especially spacious. The beds are large and comfy though, with crisp white linen, bright cobalt blue pillows and matching curtains. The full kitchen is very practical for those looking to self-cater and save a buck whilst on holiday. The separate living area (with pull-out sofa) is simply decorated with natural furnishings and is made more pleasant thanks to the abundance of natural light. The 2 bedroom suites are a larger version of the previous, with a more spacious master bedroom, a second bedroom housing twin beds, and one and a half bathrooms. All suites feature small, furnished balconies or patios (ground floor).

    Overview 8.20 /10

From its hefty appearance you might not guess that Divi Southwinds holds only 133 rooms, as the resort is quite spread out. This three star hotel began life in the 70's and consists of two large caramel-hued buildings (with wooden balconies) of five storeys each. Elevators are found throughout both wings of the hotel. The large, open-air lobby features high ceilings and is decorated with woven cane outdoor furniture, pot plants and waterfall feature. Beyond the main entrance you'll find the resort's three pools (including a kid's pool) overlooked by the buffet restaurant and activities centre. The pools are large but not very well shaded. There is very little shade in most areas of the resort; you'll find but a few coconut palms so slap on that sunscreen!

At the activities centre you can find out about the current animation programme (Divi Southwinds has an in-house animation team), rent bicycles or book external tours. A few steps away you'll find a mini-golf course, tennis and basketball courts and a children's play area. On the far side of the resort is a handy mini market, a small hair salon and gym. While the latter is open 24 hours, we found it a bit dark and a somewhat depressing place for a work out.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

Divi Southwinds features two restaurants with the principal one found within the resort grounds and the other on the beachfront. Overlooking the pool, the Bajan Breeze Restaurant serves buffet breakfast and dinner daily. It is also the place of regular Barbadian theme nights (with live entertainment) and the management-hosted rum punch parties. It is spacious and airy with wooden deck floors and large buffet stations.

Meanwhile, a quick stroll across the road will have you at Joslyn's Café, the resort's casual beachside bar and eatery. Open from 11:00am until 6:00pm, here you'll get a light lunch with mains going for around $BBD25 - $35 (£7.95 - £11.10). While Joslyn's offers OK value for beachside dining, we spotted only two local dishes on the menu, the rest being your typical "please everyone" burgers, Caesar salads and club sandwiches. Like the Bajan Breeze, Joslyn's Café is open-air and a good spot for a relaxed meal however watch out for lengthy waits for your food and drink!

    Beach 8.45 /10

The only part of the resort that is actually beachfront is Joslyn's Café; the rest of Divi Southwinds is across the road. However, the beach is only a couple minutes' walk away where there is a handful of shady fern trees, complimentary beach chairs and shower facilities, and parasols that can be rented for $US5 (£3.15) per day. While having the beach bar and café nearby is handy, it is a shame that for a medium-sized hotel there is no water sports centre. Guests may borrow snorkelling gear (free) or play a game of beach volleyball. The beach itself is pretty, with white sands and blue-green waters crashing upon the shore in tiny waves. It is a very popular spot though as the hotel finds itself in a very developed and touristic part of the island.

    To know

While a small section of the resort is beachfront (Joslyn's Café), the rest of the property is found on the other side of the main road which runs through St Lawrence Gap. Guests need to walk through the resort grounds and across the road to access the beach.

Known locally as "the pink palace," the Southern Palms Beach Club is a no-frills resort found on the edges of St Lawrence Gap. With a variety of activities on offer, this hotel is a good choice for those who like to socialise or keep active whilst on holiday. However, while it may be pink it's certainly no palace... Therefore the resort is really only suited to those who require clean accommodation without any of the extra bells and whistles.

A well-known face in "The Gap," the Rostrevor Apartment Hotel is a small, low-key property, as well as being family owned and operated. With no airs and graces, it offers very simple accommodation in an intimate setting. It is a very popular hotel with groups, families and older travellers on a budget, offering good value accommodation in the nightlife hub of the island. There are however, very few facilities on site, so the hotel is really just a place to lay your head for the evening. Activities and excursions need to be arranged with an external company.

One of three all-inclusive resorts in Barbados bearing the Almond name, the four star Almond Casuarina is a well-known south coast address, popular with couples and families alike. A huge property set on 10 acres of sprawling grounds, it is a good choice for holidaymakers who prefer large resorts that offer an array activities. It is also a good bet for its handy location on the beautiful Dover Beach and its proximity to popular spots such as Oistins and St Lawrence Gap. It is however an immense hotel with plenty going on so if you're after a tranquil Barbadian getaway this might not be a match!

Some tourists require all-out luxury wherever they go, others are content with the bare minimum as long as a certain level of propriety is adhered to. If you think you might fit into the second category, Dover Beach could be the Barbados hotel for you. If you know you'll be spending more time outside your hotel than in it, the Dover Beach Hotel is an adequate no-frills base from which to explore the island. But overall, with so few facilities, it really is a just a place to lay your weary head for the evening. And sometimes that's all you need.
