On Saint-Louis Island, just opposite the famous Faidherbe bridge, Hôtel de la Poste is reputed for having been Jean Mermoz's address, from 1932 to 1936 in the time of the legendary Aéropostale. This large building, in the colonial style typical of Saint Louis, will charm its guests with its historical past and maze-like architecture, with its arches, banisters and unusual little paths.

    Location 10.0 /10

In the historic centre of Saint-Louis, facing the Senegal river and just off the famous Faidherbe bridge. Allow a 5 minute drive for transfers to and from the airport, 3 mi away!

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

None of the 40 rooms of this beautiful building look alike as far as design, surface area and decoration are concerned. Some of them boast a beautiful and original colourful ambiance; others are rather gloomy or plain. The rooms with a view of the river are particularly pleasant. For example, Jean Mermoz's room (the "219") has the advantage of overlooking both the street and the river. Room no. 306 is the only one with a private terrace overlooking the river (with the swimming pool below). Ideal for families, it is built on three levels. It is a room much in demand. It has various sized beds and a bathroom larger than the others (with small sinks, showers, a toilet and soap). The suite, on the upper and unsuspected floor, is definitely the best accommodation with its lounge, private terrace and panoramic view of Saint ?Louis Island. The rooms have low ceilings, they are all equipped with a TV, individual air-conditioning and a direct telephone line. Room-service is available during the restaurant opening times (from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm and from 8:00 pm to 12 midnight).

    Overview 8.20 /10

Hôtel de la Poste dates from 1850. In the course of the last few decades, its architecture has been modified a lot. Today, this rich colonial residence has recovered some of its old charm, particularly since the beautiful vaults adjoining the large patio were uncovered in 2005. An interior garden, an outdoor staircase, banisters, vaults, etc, which you will explore floor after floor, add to the site's particularity, together with the use of building materials such as waxed concrete, mosaic, exposed bricks, tiles... Next to the reception, the Safari café adorned with painted bamboo and numerous hunting trophies won by the grand-fathers and great-grand-fathers of the present owners is the most typical part of the hotel. Either you like it or you don't! Although the location of Hôtel de la Poste is most attractive, it is regrettable that the café terrace is located directly on the square where all cars driving in and out of Saint-Louis Island pass. You have to leave the hotel and walk a few feet to get to the relaxation area with deckchairs and the restaurant "Flamingo", whose bar is open from 10:30 am to 2:00 am. Long and narrow, the largest swimming pool on Saint Louis Island lines the banks of the Senegal. Some trees shelter the whole street, which is actually not very lively.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

A few yards from the hotel, the restaurant "Flamingo" has a maximum capacity of 120 guests in covered (open-air) areas and indoors (with numerous windows). The place is not very modern: wooden tables, plastic chairs? On the menu, you will find snacks, Senegalese specialities, a wide choice of meats and poultry, pizzas, and fish and seafood chosen directly from the tank present in the room. Also: wines. From January to March, a rather unattractive canopy shelters the guests from the winter cool air. Unvaried breakfast is served until 10:00 am in the large hall of the hotel (80 seats). It is called "Mermoz" and is decorated with aviation photographs. You must look up to see the quote printed the length of the ceiling. After 10:00 am, you can go to the Safari bar for a coffee.

    To know

The hotel is shut every year from the end of August to September for the annual maintenance period. Wireless access is available and free of charge. Shows are sometimes performed at the restaurant "Flamingo".

    Accommodation tip:
All rooms are the same price, except for the suite. If you wish to sleep exactly where Jean Mermoz did in his time, book room no.219 a long time in advance, as it was his whenever he came to stay! Some people reserve from one year to the next.
