With a stunning waterside setting, its classic American-style beach house look and the slow, relaxed pace of life, Hotel J has to be one of our favourite, and most unique, city hotels. Spread over two buildings facing the large island of Djurgården, the hotel boasts airy, spacious and rustic marine-themed bedrooms and public spaces, a hugely popular and buzzing restaurant down by the water and even a small private beach. Effortlessly modish and brimming with charm, the hotel can also take pride in its staff and the general atmosphere that reigns over the place. If we could only choose one place to stay in Stockholm, it would probably be this one

One of Stockholm's premier hotels, the J is also one of the most tranquil and relaxing with a waterfront location.

    Location 3.02 /10

Situated in the Nacka district of the Swedish capital, the Hotel J is quite a way from the centre of Stockholm. That said, unless you are on a whirlwind tour of the city, this should not pose a problem as there are many ways to reach the area: by car (10-15 mins), bus (10-15 mins) or by ferry (15 mins). But there are other attractions closer to home to check out such as the Nacka Forum shopping mall, the Sickla Köpkvarter area, the Nyckelviken nature reserve and the Svindersvisk rococo estate. You could also take a trip out to Fjäderholmarna island to give you a taste of the city's archipelago. It is a short hop on the ferry over to Djurgården and the island of Södermalm is on the way to the city centre. There are no subway or tram stations close to the hotel. Stockholm Arlanda International Airport is around 35 miles from the hotel.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

The 158 guestrooms and suites at the J are divided into six categories. Aside from the suites which are spread over two floors, the other rooms are very similar in appearance and décor, the only differences being the view and the presence of a balcony. In fact most rooms actually enjoy a balcony or terrace aside from a few in the older of the two buildings, but of course rooms on the superior floors have clearer views of the water. All rooms have dark hardwood flooring as well as one wall whose surface is covered by whitewashed wooden slats. The furniture in the rooms is made from a light wood which is left unpainted and only lightly treated giving a somewhat rustic natural look. The crisscrossed headboard, the desk, occasional tables, chair frames (whose upholstery is candy stripe in nature), shelves, mirror frames and even lamp stands are all made from the same material and left refreshingly untampered with. The queen or king beds are dressed entirely in Gant linens, including crisp white sheets, a star-spangled plaid and striped duvet cover and pillow cases. Hiding in the closet, whose doors consist of a wooden frame with a stretched canvas backing, contain a hairdryer, safe, shoe kit and slippers. There are no iron and ironing boards in the rooms but there are several ironing rooms along the corridors. Other amenities include a flatscreen television, telephone, minibar and snacks and bathrobes. The balconies and terraces are well kept and have nice garden furniture although some are not at all private as you can see all the other balconies on that side of the building (others have opaque dividers.

The bathrooms are predominantly fitted out in white with square tiles all around, white marble surfaces and a black and white checkered floor. The mirror is framed in a slightly darker wood than is used in the bedrooms while there is also a make-up mirror. Depending on which room you take, there will either be a walk-in shower with two regular shower heads or a claw foot bathtub with Rituals toiletries and navy blue towels. Despite their colour, the bathrooms are spotless and in excellent condition.

Some of the larger guestrooms have more spacious balconies and more comfortable furniture in the shape of armchairs and footrests while the duplex suites have the bedroom upstairs and the living space downstairs with its fireplace and extra television.

    Overview 8.70 /10

Unless you have hired a car, you will arrive at the hotel by taxi as with luggage, getting to J by public transport is a bit of a hassle, especially as there is a hill to climb to access the main buildings. Outside the pair of edifices is plenty of open, green space with a patio with smart garden furniture laid out under parasols with extra loungers being placed slightly further downhill towards the water (all this in summer only, of course). Off to the left as you are facing the hotel is a path which leads up to a viewpoint atop the hill while to the right is a path which leads down to the small beach and jetty where you can get a different perspective on Djurgården and beyond.

Inside, at the reception and living room, the marine theme really comes to life. The welcome desk's front is made from whitewashed planks, while behind it is a black and white image of a sailing boat as well as the hotel's logo in a circular frame recalling a porthole. The living room, off to the right of the reception, is a very homely, US-style affair with white upholstered sofas and armchairs scattered with cushions with a white star on a blue background. A couple of large round dining tables with orchids at their centre are placed on blue rugs and have striped dining chairs around them. Behind is a small kitchen area with an honesty bar where guests can help themselves to drinks and snacks and then pay later. At the end of the room is a working fireplace with a stack of logs stored underneath ad candles placed above. Several plaques with cross sections of boats attached and a few flags complete the scene with the relaxing background music set at the perfect volume. Just outside the living room in the hallway is a computer which guests are free to use on a complimentary basis to surf the net.

Both the buildings and grounds of the hotel are kept to a very high standard. The property is clean and tidy throughout and finding your room is quick and easy despite the accommodations being spread across two blocks. Each building has an elevator serving all floors and the room numbers are well indicated.

We found the staff at the J to be extremely friendly and courteous as well as professional and accommodating. Just after our arrival at the hotel we witnessed a great piece of customer service on the part of the young lady at reception who managed to deal with a vexed customer calmly and to diffuse the situation to everyone's satisfaction.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

There are two dining areas at the Hotel J, as well as the honesty bar mentioned above in the living room area of the entrance hall. The first of these is known as Tornvilla, originally the summer house of the building contractor Erik Fredlundh who built the residence in 1889. After changing hands several times and being converted into accommodation for several families, it was abandoned in the early 1980s before being restored in 2011. Today the ground floor is used as the hotel's breakfast room. The long room has a lot of character with its creaky wooden floors, Persian rugs, floral wallpaper and porcelain hanging on the walls. A buffet is laid out in one corner where guests can enjoy both a continental offering as well as a few hot dishes. The windows give on to the water below but for the finest view head into the conservatory-type terrace where there is one long communal table where guests can mingle.

Restaurant J has an unrivalled location right in the Nacka Strand marina with spectacular views across the water to Djurgården and beyond. The main building, which has tall ceilings and beams, portholes and boat pictures around the top of the walls and a large square bar in the centre of the room, has space for 90 diners in a closely arranged set of tables and chairs. But the real pull of the restaurant is the huge terrace which extends out on to the water and which can accommodate up to 250 guests. Open in the summer only, people come from far and wide to eat, drink and take in the unique setting.

We were lucky enough to get a spot on the sought-after terrace between lunch and dinner time and despite the strange hour it was heaving. In spite also of the number of people taking in the sun that day, our food arrived within a reasonable time frame and the service was friendly and efficient. We enjoyed dishes such as the well-presented and original steak tartare with horseradish sauce and cress for starters, a simple, light yet highly flavoursome fish casserole for mains and a delicious crème brûlée for dessert.

With foot-tapping inducing music, a good looking crowd and a dreamy setting, Restaurant J is the perfect place to while away the long summer evenings with a drink and good company.

    To know

Hotel J is part of the Nobis group of hotels which also includes the Nobis and Skeppsholmen hotels as well as several other properties, restaurants, clubs and a yacht. Also a member of Design Hotels, the J's name comes from a sailing term designating a measurement rule used during the 1930s in the Americas Cup race. As well as having a small private beach, the hotel also rents out boats to guests in order that they explore the waters at their own pace. The hotel calls itself the Newport of Stockholm, in reference to the famous Rhode Island resort.

Design fans sit up and take note. This excellent Stockholm hotel stalwart might not be a hotbed of revolutionary design ideas, but its classic Scandinavian look will appeal to anyone who is passionate about the subject and who is looking for a hotel whose rooms seamlessly marry beauty and functionality. As well as the regular guestrooms, there are quite a few which have been uniquely appointed by internationally renowned Swedish designers. The hotel is well placed and has a quiet location, while inside it has highly agreeable public spaces and a top team of employees who will make you feel right at home. Birger Jarl is ideal for the leisure travellers looking for that comfortable, familiar hotel with a touch of Scandinavian flair.

Very much the ugly sibling to the group's flagship hotel in Stockholm, the Anglais is bland, inoffensive and unremarkable, although it is also a safe bet, with a decent standard across the board and a pretty central location. It is clear that some effort has been made with design and decoration but given that it is one of those hotels that specifically targets business people during the week and tourists at the weekend, it was never going to be a stunning property, rather practical. The guestrooms are in some cases on the small side but are acceptably appointed and functional and comfortable and there are spacious yet at times packed public spaces. The food is of a reasonable standard and the service too is adequate. If you are looking for more than just a place to sleep but do not want to pay through the teeth, then the Anglais could be the one for you.

The Diplomat is a perfect reflection of the city in which it has been at the top of its game for over 100 years. The setting, in this case a beautiful historic Art Nouveau building, acts as the backdrop for a relatively contemporary interior where tradition and modernity fuse effortlessly in the most laid back yet sophisticated of atmospheres. But it is not only Stockholm itself which is recalled in the style of the property, it perfectly mirrors its population too - well presented, classy but at the same time approachable and without pretention. If you do not believe us just take a look at the throngs of punters in the restaurant or on the terrace - it paints a telling picture. In terms of accommodation the Diplomat offers generously-proportioned, sleekly-appointed guestrooms and suites, many with fabulous views of the city or the water. With its smart public spaces, comfortable, civilised and buzzing dining room, faultless service and prime location, the Diplomat is one of our top picks in Stockholm.

It just goes to show that with a tad of imagination it is possible to create an original and stimulating experience which is what staying in a hotel should be about. With a theatrical and film-based leitmotiv, the property has so many great and unique features and touches as well as some fantastic design and décor elements and a buzzing food and drink scene. The attention to detail here is impressive while the service is that simple yet all-too-rare combination of cool and classy. Its great alternative location, appealing palette of colours and above all its pure trendiness makes it a place both tourists and locals alike want to be - and us too!

In a prime location in central Stockholm, Berns is one of the city's oldest and most famous properties. The glory days may be behind it, but it still manages to draw the crowds as a hotel but also as a place to eat and as an entertainment venue with a bar and magnificent concert hall. Rooms can be on the small side and the marriage between the old and the new not always a success, but they are still well-appointed and as comfortable as you will find anywhere. Arguably the jewel in the crown is the Asiatiska room which is absolutely worth seeing even if you choose not to stay at the hotel. Expect excellent service and a real buzz about the place pretty much all year round.

The Story is quite possibly the hippest hotel in Stockholm - and that in a city whose middle name, if it had one, would almost certainly be 'Cool'. This is the place where all the beautiful people come (and where a fair few of them also work) not only to sleep but also to eat, drink and party. A hotel for the young and wild, the Story succeeds where many fail, in triumphantly marrying the contemporary with the raw, industrial shell of the building. The rooms are generously proportioned in the main and have many neat features unique to the hotel while the restaurant, bar and deck are not only exciting venues but they are also fun and offer highly creative cuisine and collations. If you are looking to stay in the 'right' place in Stockholm then Story should absolutely be on your shortlist. One of our favourites.

With a rich military history and a fine setting just up from the water, it has everything you could possibly need (aside, unfortunately, for a spa) for a relaxing city break, away from the franticness of the city centre. The guestrooms are fairly minimalist, but are well-appointed and light and airy. The restaurant is top notch as is the service and the outdoor spaces are a big plus and something that you certainly will not find in downtown Stockholm. Although physically a little way from the city centre, there are several transit options for reaching the hotel - a good way to see parts of the city you may not have seen otherwise. Add in the island's attractions that most will ignore and you have the perfect setting for your Stockholm city break.
