Hotel Divi Heritage Hotel 2 star
St James, Barbados Sunset Crest, Barbados

Some hotels may only have basic facilities but are cheap and cheerful with a certain charm. Unfortunately for Divi Heritage Beach Resort, it is cheap but far from cheerful and in dire need of renovation. On top of that, we can't speak too much about its facilities for they are few and far between.

    Location 10.0 /10

Right opposite Sunset Crest in Vauxhall on the island's west coast, Divi Heritage is accessed off the main road Highway 1. The resort is about 25 minutes from Bridgetown and 45 minutes from the Grantley Adams International Airport.

    Accommodation 6.45 /10

The 22 rooms at Divi Heritage are spacious, open plan apartments with sea views. Unfortunately, they are crying out for some TLC and major renovations. Not only are the rooms somewhat dark; their old, worn out furnishings contribute to the rooms' run-down, dreary look. In the small bathrooms, everything needs to be replaced: from the bathtub, to the bathroom door, the tap fittings and the tiles that require regrouting... The cool terracotta floors and the white shutters (which can be opened for lots of natural light) couldn't save these rooms from their sorry state. Meanwhile, a set of doors opens on to an indoor patio fitted with large Jacuzzi and dining setting, before leading to a separate outdoor patio. These spacious rooms have a lot of potential - if only someone took care of them and allowed them to achieve it...

    Overview 6.45 /10

The hotel is a small and simple one, with only 22 rooms found in a handful of caramel three-storey buildings that nudge the waterfront, their architecture reminiscent of old colonial houses. At the front of the property guests pass a sole tennis court before coming across a small Reception; looking a bit dreary, it sets the tone for the rest of the resort...

Down a long path and through some spacious grounds dotted with coconut trees, accommodation is found at the water's edge. Also nearby is a Jacuzzi housed in a gazebo, while scattered throughout the gardens are a few plastic sun loungers.

As mentioned above there is no bar, restaurant or swimming pool on-site. There are no facilities for children as Divi Heritage is an adults-only resort.

The hotel has an agreement with the neighbouring Almond Beach Club & Spa; Divi Heritage guests may purchase day passes to use Almond's swimming pools, water sports facility as well as benefit from bill reductions at its restaurants.

    Food and drink

There are no bars or restaurants on-site. Guests are encouraged to self cater or to dine next door at Almond Beach Club & Spa.

    Beach 6.20 /10

The beach is a sad affair compared to the stretches of white sand found on Barbados's south coast, or even elsewhere on the west coast. There is no sandy beach but instead a man-made wall and direct access via wooden steps to the shallow, rocky shore below. Huge mahogany trees provide lots of shade. There are no beach attendants, nor beach showers or water sports facilities. However, snorkelling gear is provided free of charge. Reef shoes are recommended.
