Hotel Sofitel Taba Heights Hotel 5 star

Km 42 Nubai Taba Resort Taba, Egypt
Amy Adejokun Section editor

This Sofitel hotel is all about the grandeur, its huge lobby incorporating an arched roof depicting the night sky, complemented in turn by the particularly elaborate Oriental-inspired architecture. Its Sinbad Tower has also become symbolic of the Taba Heights resort. This sparkling hotel may not offer the warmest of surroundings, but the facilities here are excellent, making it a great place for those looking for a relaxing or even an active holiday by the sea.

    Location 8.0 /10

The Sofitel is located in the Taba Heights resort, around a 45-minute drive from Taba airport. Apart from the resort facilities, the only things surrounding the hotel are the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Aqaba and the mountainous Sinai Desert. The village of Taba lies just over 9 mi north whilst the little port town of Nuweiba is some 31 mi to the south, though neither offer much in the way of things to do and both have very few shopping opportunities.

    Accommodation 7.95 /10

The guest rooms at the Sofitel Taba Heights are spread across 4 levels in three separate wings running parallel to the Red Sea. The two original wings, at the front of the resort, contain guest rooms with busy Oriental-style decor, whilst the rooms in the new wing, built in 2008 and set back from the other two, are more modern, though still far from minimalist! 296 of the 442 guest rooms here have a sea view, and bear in mind that the rooms to the far end of the new wing are quite a way from the hotel's communal and entertainment areas.
The Egyptian-style decor in the Standard rooms is undeniably busy, but there's no denying that they will immediately immerse you in the local style and are extremely comfortable. The decor includes a patterned bedspread and studded wooden furniture with a matching chunky headboard decorated with carved wooden panels, all in warm, welcoming shades. The bathrooms, meanwhile, are a tad on the small side but nevertheless well-designed, with Egyptian tiling in the shower and ornate openwork wall lights to match the style of the bedrooms.
The rooms are also provided with all of the necessary amenities, including a free safe, a large television concealed inside a wooden unit, a direct external phone line, air-conditioning and a hair-dryer. Two things this hotel does not offer but which neighbouring establishments do, however, are bathrobes and tea and coffee-making facilities in the Standard rooms.
You might also be interested to know that the Sofitel also offers family suites consisting of two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a shared lounge area.

    Overview 7.95 /10

Having opened in 2003, the Sofitel was the 2nd hotel to open in the Taba Heights resort. The emphasis here is clearly on the Oriental style, both in terms of the architecture, the decor and the restaurants. The huge lobby, where guests will find themselves under a star-studded cupola supported by Egyptian-style columns, with a fountain at its centre and marble mosaic flooring, immediately sets the tone for the rest of the establishment. Whether you find all this simply sumptuous or altogether very kitsch will depend on your tastes! Nearby, the Sinbad Tower stands dominating the complex, and you can in fact climb the tower for some great views or even organise a romantic dinner there. Two three-storey wings span out from this central point running parallel with the sea, stretching north and south respectively. A third wing was added a little further back in 2008, bringing the total number of guest rooms up to 442. The various archways running between the buildings also offer some great views out to sea.
With a total of three outdoor swimming pools, 4 restaurants, various sports facilities, a small spa and a children's club, it really is hard to fault the amenities at the Sofitel. The winding outdoor pools are arranged in succession and incorporate two little islets where you'll find jacuzzi baths. One of the pools is filled with seawater whilst another is heated during the winter months. You'll also find plenty of deckchairs laid out in the shade of white parasols and palm trees. The spa centre, meanwhile, is nothing to write home about and consists merely of a sauna, a gym and 4 massage rooms, though it is set amid the very peaceful surroundings of a fourth, little pool built lengthwise among the hotel grounds. Most of the activities and entertainment provided are centred around the pools and the main building, the esplanade dominated by the terrace of the Sultan bar, which affords excellent views! Just beyond this lies the lobby, where entertainment is also provided of an evening in a very Oriental setting.
Various games and activities are organised in English by the hotel's 9 entertainment staff.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

At the foot of the monumental staircase leading down from the lobby lies the Aladin buffet restaurant, which serves all three meals of the day, included in the all-inclusive package. Just like the rest of the hotel, this large, bright dining room has something of the Thousand and One Nights about it, though unfortunately it does get particularly noisy at times. When the hotel is operating at full capacity, a second room opposite is also used and the same buffet served. The only difference with this room is that the decor is more Mediterranean in style and that it's notably quieter. The cuisine served here isn't the best it could be and is also a little repetitive, despite incorporating a different theme every day. The Lotus pool-bar also serves a selection of snacks throughout the day.
No stay at the Sofitel would be complete, though, without a visit to the superbly-decorated L'Asiatique à la carte restaurant, serving a selection of excellent, primarily Japanese dishes. The chef here will expertly conjure up various dishes in front of your very eyes - a treat not to be missed!
Bearing in mind that the Sofitel is part of the Taba Heights resort, guests staying here can eat at any of the 5 restaurants in the 'Uptown Village', which include a Mexican, an Indian, an Asian, a Belgian and an Oriental. Of course, guests can also choose to dine at one of the other à la carte restaurants (14 in total) at the other hotels in the complex by prior reservation and for a supplement.

    Beach 8.20 /10

Just like its Taba Heights neighbours, the Sofitel offers direct access to the complex's two and a half mile-long beach. The area of beach opposite the hotel is furnished with deckchairs and cushions arranged in pairs under palm-branch parasols, sheltered by a woven windbreaker making for very pleasant surroundings.
As is the case wherever you go in Taba, the natural surroundings here are particularly pleasant, overlooking the Saudi coastline across the clear, turquoise waters. Coral 'potatoes' can be found just a few metres from the shoreline, and taking a dip here is the closest you're likely to get to experiencing life in an aquarium. The Sofitel also has a jetty providing direct access to some of the most beautiful coral 'potatoes' you're likely to come across, so get your snorkelling gear on! Of course, this also means you'll need to take care of your feet here. Whether you go for plastic sandals or diving shoes, some sort of amphibious footwear is a must! Even just getting into the water is difficult with bare feet due to the many stones scattered about in the sand.
Last but not least, guests at the Sofitel can also enjoy special access to the Waterworld centre where they can try their hand at snorkelling, diving and a large selection of other water sports for an additional charge.

    To know

The Sofitel is one of the 5 hotels which make up the Taba Heights resort. It offers easy access to nearly 2 and a half miles of beach, an 18-hole golf course, the Waterworld diving and water sports centre and the 'Uptown Village' consisting of a shopping street and five à la carte restaurants. The hotels and various places of interest around the resort are served by two shuttle buses which run every 20 minutes.
