Well located on the sandy part of the coast, at the beginning of the touristic area of Tabarka (near the city and Genoese fort), the Dar Ismail is recommended in the low season: to avoid crowding round the swimming pool, the noise in the main restaurant, and the queues for the buffet. The hotel is beyond reproach in April-May or end-October. Note: The Dar Ismaïl is open all year-round; however, its covered leisure facilities are not very big.

    Location 1.0 /10

By the sea, in the touristic area of Tabarka, half a mile from the town centre, and 7.5 mi from the airport. Allow 10 minutes for the trip.

    Accommodation 7.95 /10

The hotel has 290 rooms, all adapted for at least three people, including 12 suites (with a lounge area). If you come on your own or in a couple, you will therefore be accommodated in a space big enough for three (about 30 m2). The third set of bedding is a real bed (whose advantage is comfort, but whose disadvantage is that it is not aesthetically pleasing, as it cannot be turned into a settee if you are not using it). Regarding the view, if the rooms opposite the swimming pool and third floor are already occupied, you can look over the swimming pool and the gardens, the hotel entrance (brightened up by a fountain surrounded by flowers), the games area of the mini-club and gardens, or the sides of the hotel (definitely the least beautiful view, however, it is all relative; there is greenery here too). Each room has a balcony (on the upper and ground floors), plastic armchairs, and a low table. The rest of the furniture is in painted wood, with decoration in wrought iron. The facilities include: a television, air conditioning, a telephone, a safe and a minibar. Bathroom with bath, hairdryer, 30 ml Yasmine welcome products.

    Overview 7.45 /10

A three storey building consisting of a main block and a new wing that was completed in 2008, the Dar Ismail stands out from the other Tabarka hotels with its brightly painted walls (yellow, red), ivy climbing up some facades, and its general atmosphere of southern Tunisia... We are in the north of the country here, but never mind the geographical anachronism. In the gardens planted with pine and palm trees is a swimming pool ornamented by an area for children with a fountain, a play area topped by a walkway, and a pool bordered by fountains in the shape of swans' necks: measuring around 25m by 15, you can swim in this pool when the hotel is not very full. Otherwise, you put your deckchair in a quiet corner of the gardens: on the lawn, or in the shade of a tree or a sunshade. It has a Mediterranean atmosphere, even though you do not actually see the Mediterranean. The sea front is actually hidden by the "barbecue" (restaurant swimming pool) and a low wall indicating the grounds by the beach. Swimming pool and beach towels are available on cash deposit. Regarding facilities that are "useful if the weather is bad" (as it rains in the north of Tunisia in winter), do not expect too much from the covered swimming pool (7 x 4m); however, you can try the facilities of the fitness centre. The arrangements are simple and the prices reasonable: a massage costs £13.20, and access to the Turkish bath (with wrap), £17.60.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The main restaurant is on a level with the gardens, behind the swimming pool. The tables are arranged along the bay windows (the best), however, not on the terrace (a shame); the dining room, criss-crossed by furniture, can accommodate up to 750 guests... When full, you eat in a very busy atmosphere. So come along at other times: at the beginning of the service for breakfast and lunch, and at the end of the service for dinner. You will thus avoid queues at the buffet and the noise in the restaurant. Other possibilities: the "barbecue" swimming pool (an open structure, topped by a tiled roof), and the a la carte restaurant overlooking the beach (tables inside and on terrace). However, the places there are limited.

    Beach 7.70 /10

You cross the gardens to reach the beach. This begins on the other side of the wall marking the boundary of the hotel estate. A privileged location on one of the extremities of the touristy area, with a view of the Genoese Fort, and access to the town of Tabarka, 20 minutes walk away by the sea. The sand runs along around half a mile of the hotel grounds, and is 40m wide. There is, therefore, plenty of space: which does not prevent the straw sunshades from being very close together over 6 rows. This is very good for shade, but less good for the aesthetics or peacefulness. On the other hand, bathing is very pleasant: a sandy bed, translucid water (the Coral Coast is one of the most beautiful coasts in Tunisia). As regards sports, there are a few motor boats available. There is no diving club in the hotel: you have to get to one of the clubs at the port of Tabarka by your own means (£2.60 in a taxi, and diving from £26.30, with equipment).

    To know

The Dar Ismail is open all year-round. With a limited choice of facilities in the winter (small covered swimming pool, fitness centre, Turkish bath, and sauna). In the summer, the hotel receives up to 900 customers at maximum capacity. As it is approved by the Italian tour-operator Francorosso, there is a majority of Italian customers. The Dar Ismail is best for a stay mid-season (April/May, October/November): there are less people, and more space around the swimming pool and in the restaurant.
    Accommodation advice
All the bedrooms are fitted for three people. An advantage if there are two of you. The extra bed can then be used as a seat.
The best view from the rooms is on the sea front, and the third and top floor: view over the gardens, the swimming pool, and part of the Mediterranean (by - polite - request at reception, if the hotel is not full)..

This is a hotel to keep in mind due to its central location in Tabarka's tourist zone, its Olympic-sized swimming pool (the only hotel to have one in the resort, although it is sometimes used as a training pool), its beautiful beach and its newly refurbished rooms. It should be noted, all the same, that the hotel welcomes many guests, and the communal areas (swimming pool solarium, restaurant) soon feel like a henhouse.

A beautiful hotel with comfortable rooms, and a well-designed thalassotherapy centre. Located on Côte de Corail, at one of the far ends of the tourist areas. The Genoese Fort of Tabarka is still visible at the back of the bay, the city centre is only a few minutes' taxi ride away... Comfort, peace and quiet and a beautiful panorama: a hotel to be recommended to everyone, families, groups of friends, anyone interested in marine body care. It is very good value.

A good hotel for athletic types, the Royal Golf, with its old-fashioned charm, is very well located for playing golf (alongside the Tabarka golf course) and recommended for diving, cycling and swimming. Perfect for a summer break in a pine forest, among the bougainvilleas. In other words, a simple, hassle-free stay. Those who are used to soundproofed, brand new hotels or resorts had best avoid the Royal Golf: they will find it more like a campsite or a youth hostel.

A simple hotel located next to the natural sand dunes of the Coral coast and not far from the centre of Tabarka. It is to be recommended for its welcome, reasonable prices and its authentic, Tunisian, pre-tourism ambiance, but only from March to September as it is closed during the winter months. However, there is a negative point as far as the layout is concerned, as the auxiliary block of rooms was built between the swimming pool and the sand dunes meaning that you cannot see the sea from the pool. Never mind, just go to the beach instead.
