A good hotel for athletic types, the Royal Golf, with its old-fashioned charm, is very well located for playing golf (alongside the Tabarka golf course) and recommended for diving, cycling and swimming. Perfect for a summer break in a pine forest, among the bougainvilleas. In other words, a simple, hassle-free stay. Those who are used to soundproofed, brand new hotels or resorts had best avoid the Royal Golf: they will find it more like a campsite or a youth hostel.

    Location 8.46 /10

Overlooking the Coral Coast, alongside the entrance to the Tabarka golf club and one mile from the town centre. The airport is 6 mi away. Transfer time is around 10 minutes.

    Accommodation 6.20 /10

In accordance with Tunisian hotel industry standards, a 3* rating stipulates that bedrooms must have a minimum floor area of 172 sq ft; this minimum increases to 234 sq ft in 4* and 344 sq ft in 5* hotels. As a 3*+ hotel, the Royal Golf has double rooms with a floor area of around 215 sq ft: on this front, everything is fine. The same goes for the bathrooms: there is a bathtub but no hair-dryer (this is not compulsory in this category of hotel) and "sample-size" hospitality products are provided (but after all, who expects to find hospitality products in 3*+ accommodation?). On the other hand, bedding is old-style (with a soft mattress), the walls are white-rendered, which fails to keep out the noise, the television is toy-sized, and the refrigerator has to be paid for. The rooms do have air-conditioning and a telephone, though, so let's not complain. Of the hotel's 160 bedrooms and 2 suites, all have a balcony (with plastic garden furniture), half of them face the sea (in the distance, beyond the hotel access road and the Iberostar buildings), and the other half face the pine and cork oak-planted hills.

    Overview 6.95 /10

This two-storey old-style development took one year to build (1991) and one to renovate (2004), and has a good handful of bedrooms (160) and 2 suites. The Royal Golf is a hotel built around the sporting activities, rather than the other way around. Those who are used to youth hostels and campsites will find certain details rather charming, such as the double-banister wrought iron staircase, the small pastel-coloured lounge near the picture window and the reed pergola alongside the swimming pool. Unfortunately, the maintenance of the property leaves something to be desired, especially where access to the Turkish bath (in a separate building from the hotel) and the mini-club is concerned: long grass, dead leaves... you would almost think you were in the outback. Fortunately, the lawns and gardens around the swimming pool are better presented! So, you will spend your free time around the edge of this rectangle of turquoise water (of around 56x49 ft), which also has a whirlpool bath. Thatched parasols and plastic deckchairs. Bring your own bath towel with you to avoid having to hire one.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

All three meals are served in buffet form, the format is convivial and allows you to eat as much (or as little) as you like. Hot and cold dishes are served for breakfast, and a Tunisian evening (with a speciality buffet) is organised on Tuesdays. The upstairs dining room has no outdoor tables and the furniture is very close together; however, if you come at the beginning or the end of the service, you should be able to get a seat near to one of the picture windows. If you are staying on a half-board basis, drinks and snacks are served throughout the day near the swimming pool, under the reed pergola: seating is provided in the form of wooden benches, in rustic surroundings that suit the style of the hotel. Do not be surprised, though, if there are two or three insects buzzing around in the air: they are part of the local nature here.

    Beach 6.20 /10

The hotel is 985 ft from the beach. That may seem very close, but you have to walk along a tarmacked road, then down a sandy path. Make sure you wear a hat or cap - the summer sun is very strong in Tabarka. Arriving at the beach: at the end of the sandy part of the Coral Coast (1.5 mi to the centre of Tabarka). Do not be offended by the area laid out by the Royal Golf: a thatched-roofed bar, a few deckchairs and parasols, all within an area of 66x164 ft. You can also sit alongside this area, on the public beach (although not under the thatched huts set up a little further along, belonging to the Yadis Morjane hotel). The water is perfect for swimming - clear and warm. There are no water sports available (so you can soak up the sun in peace). Those who wish to go diving should get themselves down to the port of Tabarka.

    To know

The Royal Golf is a seasonal hotel, open from March to October. Recommended for young, athletic guests. It is also the hotel used by the tour operator UCPA for active holidays at Tabarka: as part of a special diving or golf package. Enthusiasts of these activities should purchase these options when booking. Alternatively, "a la carte" sporting activities are available on-site. The Tabarka golf course is located 300m away (accessible to holders of a green card, green fee of over £35). The diving centres are located in the port, a 10-minute taxi ride away (costing around £2.60, diving including equipment for £26 to £31).
    Accommodation tip
Just for a change, the best view from the bedrooms is not one of the sea but rather one of the swimming pool (and wooded hills). All the better, as there is no supplement to pay! Comfort is basic, though: soft mattresses, faded carpet in the corridors, reduced soundproofing, a television screen so small you couldn't spend your evenings in front of it...

This is a hotel to keep in mind due to its central location in Tabarka's tourist zone, its Olympic-sized swimming pool (the only hotel to have one in the resort, although it is sometimes used as a training pool), its beautiful beach and its newly refurbished rooms. It should be noted, all the same, that the hotel welcomes many guests, and the communal areas (swimming pool solarium, restaurant) soon feel like a henhouse.

Well located on the sandy part of the coast, at the beginning of the touristic area of Tabarka (near the city and Genoese fort), the Dar Ismail is recommended in the low season: to avoid crowding round the swimming pool, the noise in the main restaurant, and the queues for the buffet. The hotel is beyond reproach in April-May or end-October. Note: The Dar Ismaïl is open all year-round; however, its covered leisure facilities are not very big.

A beautiful hotel with comfortable rooms, and a well-designed thalassotherapy centre. Located on Côte de Corail, at one of the far ends of the tourist areas. The Genoese Fort of Tabarka is still visible at the back of the bay, the city centre is only a few minutes' taxi ride away... Comfort, peace and quiet and a beautiful panorama: a hotel to be recommended to everyone, families, groups of friends, anyone interested in marine body care. It is very good value.

A simple hotel located next to the natural sand dunes of the Coral coast and not far from the centre of Tabarka. It is to be recommended for its welcome, reasonable prices and its authentic, Tunisian, pre-tourism ambiance, but only from March to September as it is closed during the winter months. However, there is a negative point as far as the layout is concerned, as the auxiliary block of rooms was built between the swimming pool and the sand dunes meaning that you cannot see the sea from the pool. Never mind, just go to the beach instead.
