Far from crowds of frenzied tourists, the charming little house sits on a hill flanked with orange groves as far as the eye can see and right in the centre of beautiful wild natural gardens teeming with birds and butterflies. The Casa del Rei is a good example of some of the comfortable guesthouses that are springing up all over the Algarve. Located in the east of the Algarve close to the village of Tavira, beaches are within a short drive. A warm welcome from Geraldine and Robin, a British expatriate couple, makes guests fee at home right away. An ideal place to come to wind down for a few days. The casa is great for couples looking for a bit of peace and quiet.

    Location 5.0 /10

The guesthouse is officially par of Tavira, although it is a little outside the village in an area called Almargem. In the immediate surroundings there isn't much going on as the casa sits on a country road. Tavira has a rich history as an important fishing port; the village was also an important Moorish city in the 1700s and ruins of forts and settlements are still visible all over the village. The hotel is about an hour's drive east on the N-125 from Faro, the capital of the Algarve. The nearest beach is about 10 minutes' drive away in Cabanhas.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

With its seven rooms, this quaint little farmhouse's setting in its wild gardens surrounded by orange groves, the Casa Vale del Rei is the ultimate place to stay for a few days. Each room is different in its décor, size and general atmosphere. Most have double beds, with the exception of one, which has a single bed for a young child. All bed linen is high thread-count crisp Egyptian cotton, every room has an ensuite bathroom and air-conditioning. For guests who aren't fond of air-conditioning the windows are all netted to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside, making it possible to sleep with the windows open.

The décor is extremely simple, but has its charms and the beds, we can confirm, are extremely comfortable. Every room has a view onto the surrounding landscape. In addition to the seven rooms, there is also the private cabin in the back garden, which has a roof-top terrace for sunbathing, bird watching, or just for an aperitif at sunset. The cabin, made from whitewashed weathered boards recalls a beachy freshness and was our favourite room here.

    Overview 7.70 /10

Upon arrival up the long drive up the slight hill, through the front gardens, we parked the car in a small car park in front of the guesthouse. To the back of the house is where the multi-tiered garden and pool area are found. The several layers create lots of private nooks where guests are found reading or sunbathing. The elegant pool boasting chic navy blue cabana-striped Standkorbe deck chairs - ask Geraldine what the secret of the chairs is and she will be more than happy to give you a full demonstration of all the different configurations! And that is not all on the secrets of the pool area - the deck chair mattresses, all made out of special boating material, never get hot in the sun, preventing guests from scorching their backsides! An ingenious investment indeed.

The entrance is to the side of the house, opposite a second terrace that guests can also use. The common areas include, as well as the terraces and outdoor areas, the kitchen's dining area and living room. The house living room is where there is a television, but more importantly large cosy sofas for curling up with a good book in the evenings. Adjoined to this area is the farmhouse kitchen, where guests can help themselves to hot drinks throughout the day.

    Food and drink

Breakfast is served every morning in the kitchen and out on the patio. Guests have access to a fridge and other bits and bobs for making sandwiches at lunch or dinner if they don't want to venture out. They also have access to tea and coffee all day. Geraldine and Robin are happy to give their guests recommendations for places to see and eat.

    Beach

While the beach isn't within walking distance, the nearest one is about 20 minutes' drive from the house and as most guests tend to have their own car or rent a bike, it makes for the perfect excuse to explore the surrounding area. The nearest beach is in Tavira. Our preferred beach is behind the Vila Galé Albacora Hotel a little way out of Tavira. It sits right on the banks of the Formosa River encased in fine white powdery beaches. There is also a beach accessible via a two minute boast-taxi ride from the hotel. The area is part of a protected natural park so tourists must take all their rubbish with them after a day here in order to help keep the area clean.

    To know

Although the guesthouse doesn't refuse children, it is important for them to be well behaved and quiet in order to maintain the serene atmosphere.

The Casa del Rei is closed over the winter, so check dates before making plans.

The Pedras del Rei is suitable for families who look for rest and stillness. They are housed in small white cottages in the heart of a well maintained flowery park planted with trees. A playful point in the stay : the small train that drives you to the beach.

One of two Vila Galé hotels in Tavira, the Albacora Hotel is situated outside the village on a sand bank lining the river Formosa that crosses Tavira just steps away from the ferry that takes guests to the various islands in the area. The area looks extremely quiet and calm - an ideal retreat for those in need of some quality r and r, however, from end of May till September, the area is seething with tourists. The Albacora ('Albacora' meaning tuna fish in English) used to be a fishing settlement, which was converted into a hotel. Out of the way and close to the beach, the hotel is ideal for families needing the convenience of onsite facilities while remaining in remote natural surroundings.

A charming and historical upmarket and slightly eerie place to stay, the Pousada Convento da Graça (or Pousada Tavira for short; and 'pousada' pronounced 'posada'), is an 18th century convent that was converted to a hotel and opened in 2001. The peaceful but slightly cold pousada (large house in English) is laid out around an angular cloister, but is nevertheless a charming place to stay that stands out from the rest. Set by Tavira castle in the old part of town where cobbled streets lead to quaint parks. This is the place to stay if you want to immerse yourself in local culture while staying at an upmarket hotel within the village itself. Although the hotel doesn't refuse children, it is more of a place for couples or friends due to the general quiet atmosphere, even in high season.

The Vila Galé Tavira is open all year-round, unlike its sister hotel, Albacora, in Quatro Aguas just outside of Tavira. A resort hotel located right in the new centre of Tavira, it is an old-fashioned hotel with dated décor. However, even if you are not a big fan of resorts in general, it can be a good base to explore the area from, but to spend all one's time onsite might be a little depressing after a while due to its lack of ambience, dark interiors hiding from the harsh sun, and dull colours used.

A smart and contemporary home away from home for travellers in need of full-on rest and relaxation. Let the soothing spell take over as you arrive and give in to the tranquil atmosphere as the daily stresses of everyday life slowly melt away. Staying here is like spending time at a friend's house for the weekend. Located in Luz de Tavira, a small village 20 minutes away from Tavira in eastern Algarve, close to the coast, Vilacampina is a large house that is run by Sofia, also the owner; she is very passionate about giving her guests the best. Ideal for couples looking to get some quality time together, but as the house is quite a small property in comparison to a hotel the setting is quite an intimate one and therefore wouldn't be suitable for rowdy children.

Tavira House is a discreet contemporary boutique guesthouse nestled in one of Tavira's residential streets. Extremely well-renovated, the 19th century house is a home away from home for a high-end clientele that likes things simple, neat and fuss-free. Comfortable with kitsch 'Austin Powers-esque' touches, the house is a great base to explore the rest of the area from. An ideal pied à terre for a wide-ranging clientele, from couples to families.

A charming, authentic and stylish 17th century Portuguese guesthouse that wins our hearts hands down in terms of places to stay in Tavira. If what you are after is living the life like the locals, then the Casa Beleza do Sul is the place to stay. Originally a large family home that has been estimated as dating back to the late 1800s, Paola and her husband, both architects, built the house into what it is today together. Located on a narrow cobbled city centre street, the house chimes with impassioned debates usually about football from the bar just across the street, or the sounds of children playing along the streets, the house lives to the rhythm of the community. The best of the Casa? Its roof-top balcony looking over Tavira's peculiar square rooftops and of course, its lovely rooms, which are all different and very stylish. This is the perfect place for couples, but as the house has an intimate atmosphere, it isn't ideal for noisy guests/groups.
