The Pez Espada is emblematic of Torremolinos, as its opening in 1959 marked the beginning of the hotel industry on the Costa del Sol. The building looks just like a classic 1950's Miami hotel and has hosted numerous celebrities and personalities in its day. It has kept pace with the times though, and is now a charming 4 star holiday hotel, ideal for a romantic break or a nostalgic dip into the past.

    Location 4.11 /10

The hotel is in the La Carihuela district, which was traditionally the fishermen's district of Torremolinos. There are lots of bars and restaurants in the vicinity, so you will have no difficulty finding somewhere to enjoy a delicious dish of "pescaíto frito" and a drink. The centre of Torremolinos is about 15 minutes away. The numerous restaurants and promenades of Puerto Marina are also nearby, in the neighbouring district of Benalmádena. The Torrequebrada golf course is just over 2 mi from the hotel. If you wish to explore a little further afield, some of the more interesting places to visit include Ronda (62 mi), Gibraltar (87 mi), and Granada (87 mi).

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

In total, the hotel has 205 guest rooms, including 7 suites and 6 junior suites. The hotel's proximity to the sea means the views are very pretty, and 80% of the rooms overlook the garden and swimming pool with the Mediterranean in the background. Unfortunately for the remaining 20%, they have to make do with a view of the hotel car park. The rooms are spacious and bright, and their decor is both stylish and functional. The rooms in the annex are a bit different to those in the main building though, as they have a larger terrace and a different style of furniture. In all other respects, they are provided with the same facilities: a plasma screen television, telephone, air conditioning, heating, a hair dryer, etc. The hospitality products are a bit of a modest offering for a 4 star hotel, amounting to no more than a little basket containing a few shower gel and shampoo samples! The safe can be used by guests at an added cost of about £2 per day, plus a £2.5 deposit. Also, you can request the mini bar to be stocked in one of two different ways, or can simply hire the fridge for about £2 a day. What sets the suites apart from the other rooms is their small entrance area, lounge (with a sofa, armchair, desk, table, chairs, and additional television) and the spacious bathroom containing a jacuzzi, bathtub, shower, and hair dryer.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The Pez Espada first opened its doors on 31st May 1959 and its status as one of the first luxury hotels on the Costa del Sol saw it become one of the most celebrated symbols of tourism in the region. The hotel has adapted its facilities over time and is currently an entirely modern establishment. Nevertheless, it has retained a few period features bearing testimony to its highly sophisticated and romantic past. One such example is the impressive wall fresco and its depictions of typical scenes from an Andalusian village. This work was created by the artist Pierre François R.D the same year the hotel opened and currently occupies a position opposite the reception. The floor and the columns in the hallway, and the facade of the 7 storey main building also hark back to the 1950's, taking inspiration from the classic hotels of the golden age of Miami. Indeed, it has been claimed that the architects behind the building, Juan Jáuregui and Manuel Muñoz (the latter also designed the Santiago Bernabéu shopping centre in Madrid), took inspiration from the Fontainebleau Hilton in this Florida city when designing the Pez Espada. Since its opening, the hotel has seen different eras come and go and has undergone a number of renovations in this time. The most extensive of these came in the middle of the 1980's, when the hotel was taken over by the Med Playa chain. At this time, a whole new 4 storey building was added to boost the number of rooms and provide space for the beauty centre. It is connected to the original building by a small covered corridor and a stylish garden with a swimming pool. Don't forget to try out the well-being centre, which houses an indoor swimming pool, several massage booths, and a sauna.

    Food and drink 8.95 /10

The Pez Espada has a sophisticated restaurant looking over the Torremolinos pedestrian walkway. The dining room is spacious and the picture windows lining the walls allow in plenty of light. Breakfast and dinner are served in this pleasant lounge area as a buffet of remarkably varied dishes. The quality of the ingredients and recipes is fantastic, and the counter displays a very appealing array of delicious meats, fish, pasta, soups, salads, rice-based dishes, dessert, and so on. You can even sample dishes freshly prepared before your eyes in the show cooking area. Drinks are charged separately. The hotel does not serve lunch, although Frankie's Bar has a range of sandwiches, burgers, and other snacks on offer over the summer season. This bar, named in honour of Frank Sinatra after his visit to the hotel, is open from 9:00am to 1:00am and is also a great place to enjoy a drink while looking out over the attractive garden. Smoking is allowed.

    Beach 7.70 /10

The beach is very close at hand: you simply have to cross the pedestrian promenade separating it from the facilities of the Pez Espada to get there. With dark sand and clean water, the whole beach is peaceful and quite spacious. All the same, at the height of the season, it is worth arriving before the crowds to make sure you get a good spot, as the hotel does not have a private section of sand reserved for its guests. A number of private companies are on hand to hire out hammocks and parasols to beachgoers (this will set you back about £8.5 a day).

    To know

In low season, the hotel attracts a lot of international guests (mostly English and German) of retirement age. During the seasonal rush, however, Spanish guests are predominant and the place has more of a family feel to it. The hotel is open all year round, even in November and December, the quietest time of the year. However, the annex building does close duration low season. Shows like piano recitals and other instrumental performances are staged for the entertainment of guests around 4 nights a week. In summer, daily entertainment programmes are organised by an energetic team of coordinators, but none of this is geared towards children (even in summer), who do not even have a mini-club to amuse themselves. There are about 100 parking spaces that can be used free of charge. You can request wired Internet access in your room for an additional charge. Smoking is permitted in all of the rooms. This hotel is legendary on the Costa del Sol and owes much of its fame to the list of famous people who have slept in its rooms. These include King Juan Carlos of Spain (while he was still a prince), the King's father, Don Juan de Bourbon, King Baudouin of Belgium, Princess Astrid of Norway, the previous Prime Minister of Argentina, Juan Domingo Perón, the ex-Minister Manuel Fraga, and artists such as Sofia Loren, Ava Gardner, Charlton Heston, Orson Welles, etc. A photo and autograph gallery featuring some of these figures is on display in the hotel corridors.

The Griego Mar hotel is situated in the middle of the resort of Torremolinos, some 3,000 ft from the sea, on the Costa del Sol. It offers good value for money and its all-inclusive option is ideal for families who are looking for high quality entertainment. Known for its night-club, the hotel is unfortunately very far from the beach and the concrete blocks which surround it kill all its charm.
