Thirty-five rooms in the heart of the village of Isola Rossa. The Corallo (Italian for coral) may not look like much with its rather off-putting building, but it is actually a charming hotel facing the port. It is run by a Franco-Sardinian couple and blends a modern interior with a rich family history. The personalised welcome is particularly warm and friendly, the rooms are beautiful and comfortable, and the food is exquisite. Giovanna, the owner, will tell you that "perfection does not exist, but quality does." Having little in the way of amenities; this is everything except a resort club, but an ideal starting point to discover the land and the seaside.

    Location 10.0 /10

The village of Isola Rossa (Red Island) used to be a charming little fishing village built on a rocky peninsula. Nowadays, there are still a few fishermen left but it has mostly become a small seaside resort halfway along the northeastern coast of Sardinia. Located between Castelsardo and Santa Teresa Gallura, it is the perfect place to visit this coast that has remained quite wild despite its beautiful beaches (Costa Paradiso). The small mountainous inland region is also worth a visit. A drive along 50 mi of winding roads will take you to Olbia airport, and you should expect an hour and a half to get there. Alghero airport is 62 mi away (a little more than one hour and three quarters).

    Accommodation 8.10 /10

Unfortunately, the standard rooms at the Corallo do not have a view of the port and the sea or port. However, those on the charming second floor do look out onto the old "Spanish Tower" behind the building, or onto an earth embankment if you're on the less charming first floor. Either way, there is a small balcony that allows guests to enjoy the fresh air. The interior of the standard rooms boasts bright colours, such as red and yellow on a white background. The rooms are luminous and comfortable, even the ones on the first floor. The amenities are standard and include a stock up mini bar, the free use of a safe, and everything else one might expect from this kind of establishment, even satellite TV. The superior and deluxe rooms afford a view of the sea and the port. The deluxe rooms and suites boast a very enjoyable 25 m² terrace, one of which includes a jacuzzi. The superior rooms on the second floor offer the nicest view from their highly pleasant hanging terraces.

    Overview 8.00 /10

The Corallo is located in the centre of the village, on a narrow strip of land facing the fishing port and marina. It is composed of two back-to-back buildings and the exterior architecture is not in the least bit interesting. There is a large terrace at the front of the hotel with a small garden, a small swimming pool and a couple of deck chairs. It is a great place to enjoy some fresh air and a bit of sun after a nice walk, but it looks onto the surrounding buildings and won't make you want to linger for too long. However, in the evening, it's the perfect place to enjoy a drink or a meal while admiring the sunset over the port. This makes for a nice moment.
The communal areas occupy the ground floor of the hotel: the reception area, the bar and the restaurant, a library and a breakfast room. The interior is tasteful, bright, warm and modern. The owners have given a lot of thought to every detail. Ceramics made by a local craftsman are on display and there is a proper cellar where you can taste local wines with the establishment's owner. Finally, although the hotel only has two floors, there is a lift to take you up to your room.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

At the Corallo, only breakfast is served in the form of a buffet. Copius, it is served in a luminous room with a quiet setting. Just about everything is homemade, the choice is not that varied, but every dish is delicious. Most guests choose the half-board formula, and lunch and dinner are à la carte and served in the restaurant or on the terrace. It's not particularly cheap, but there is a wide choice and a real chef working in the kitchen to prepare exquisite dishes. The freshly made pasta and the fish are particularly delicious.

    Beach

The closest beach to the Corallo is about 150 m away, through the village, and along the port. It is a big public beach with a privately owned concession where you can hire a deck chair and a sunshade. There is a water sports club where you can enjoy jet-skiing and diving, or where you can hire a kayak, a pedal boat or a sailing boat. The site is magnificent with fine sand, crystal clear water and lifeguards... The only downside is the crowd!

    To know

The Corallo was opened by the owner's grandfather in 1964 and was named after the coral reef that lies just off the shore in front of the village. The owner's grandfather used to welcome workers from Naples who came to gather coral, and the establishment grew from being a restaurant with a couple of rooms to a proper hotel that is now part of the French Exclusive Hotels Group.
