The Fer Cheval is a basic yet very respectful little bed and breakfast tucked away just behind the main drag of Trouville-sur-Mer. It may not be able to boast the type of facilities as the big boys however it more than makes up for this in charm and the fact that it gives the guest an opportunity to experience the town from a different perspective. The rooms are simple but functional and the breakfast room is one of the nicest we saw (plus their patisserie is home-made!). Both couples and families would be comfortable here providing being on the seafront is not a priority.

    Location 9.96 /10

The hotel is situated on rue Victor Hugo, a small street behind the main stretch of restaurants, cafs and shops on the river front. The beach can be reached on foot in less than 10 minutes while the Trouville-Deauville train station is a 5 minute walk away. You can be in the centre of Deauville in just 15 minutes and the Deauville-St. Gatien Airport is a 10-minute taxi ride away.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The rooms at the Fer Cheval are divided simply into three categories: standard, superior and family. All the rooms are decorated in the same sober colour palette with creams, beiges and browns being preferred. The standard rooms come with a queen bed dressed in matching brown plaid and cushions. A simple all-in-one headboard and bedside tables unit wraps around behind the bed while the rest of the furniture consists of a small desk, cupboard space and in some cases a drawer unit. A flatscreen television can also be found in the room. Many of the rooms have flowers in which is a nice touch as well as equestrian prints on the walls. The bathrooms are on the small side but are in good condition (many have been refitted with gleaming tiles and Gerberit fittings while the rest are to be redone before the end of 2011) and have shower cubicle or bathtub, a hairdryer and basic toiletries. The superior rooms enjoy a larger surface area and most have a balcony while the junior suite has a four-poster bed in the main bedroom and a second bedroom with bunk beds for the kids.

    Overview 7.20 /10

Despite being found in a quiet street in a small Normandy town, the building housing the Fer Cheval would not look out of place in one of London's grand Victorian squares with its false balconies and white stonework encircling its windows. Sadly, the lobby isn't quite as impressive and is probably the least remarkable part of the hotel with just a simple reception desk and sideboard both of which have flower arrangements. A much more pleasant space is the lounge area just next door, attached to the breakfast room, which has chunky armchairs, a coffee table and flatscreen television all in a cosily decorated corner with drapes and a disused fireplace.

The rest of the hotel's common areas are clean and tidy and getting t your room is fairly simple, via the lift or the creaky staircase lined with seagrass. You'll notice as you walk around sideboards on the landings with cute little knickknacks on them, just as you might see in a private home. The hotel is totally non-smoking and there is free wifi throughout.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

The breakfast room at the Fer Cheval is quite a surprise and is something you'd expect to see is a trendy city hotel. The bright, airy room, which has hardwood floors, boasts leather banquettes hugging the walls with smart dark wood tables and stylish suede chairs the other side. Each table is laid with freshly cut flowers and there are even plants on the walls, beautifully presented on canvas. For when the weather allows, there is a small terrace out back where guests can enjoy their breakfast which is a continental spread with eggs the way you like them cooked. Something that very few other bed and breakfasts can claim is that the owner himself bakes the pastries, his other occupation being a baker!

    To know

The Fer Cheval, which means horseshoe in French, is a family-run affair and has been under the management of the Dutant family since 2002, although it was still a hotel beforehand. The hotel is made up of three houses and is a typical example of Norman architecture.
